With the third series of Lost about to hit British screens, we thought we’d bring you up to speed with what happened during the action-packed climax at the end of last season. With so many twists and turns, we’re sure there’s a few memories out there that need a fair bit of jogging…
As last season’s finale came to an end, several plot strands were left tantalising us and in need of resolution. The love axis of Jack, Kate and Sawyer look to be in serious trouble with The Others, after Michael lured them into a trap. Plus Locke had ensured that the numerical sequence in the hatch wasn’t entered on time – sending an electromagnetic current that sent shockwaves through the sky and an impending sense of an apocalypse. Here’s some more background to those exciting events…
Firstly, the hatch. Locke – clearly no fan of the Sugababes – was determined not to push the button inside the underground lair and see what happens when the numbers aren’t entered. He believed the whole act was a deception by the Dharma Initiative and they were effectively lab rats being monitored for their behaviour. He seemingly managed to convince Desmond to let the clock tick down. The Scottish hatch-dweller had earlier returned to the island following a futile bid to escape by yacht to Fiji.
Eko had other ideas, but Desmond tricked him and locked him out of the control room. Realising he needed to blast his way in, he rigged up some explosives with the help of Charlie and quickly detonated them. The door to the control room sustained little damage, unlike the nearby humans. Charlie soon regained consciousness and tended to the wounded Eko.
In cataclysmic scenes, Desmond decided to bail out of the plan, but Locke smashed the computer needed to input the numbers. As strange symbols flashed across the room and a loud humming sound surfaced, there was a sense of impending dread and Desmond opened the doors to escape.
As magnetic charges began to blister through the room, Eko managed to get up and enter – only to discover it’s too late. Locke apologetically acknowledged his mistake. We then observed the skies turning a distinctly ominous shade of violet and the hatch door flinging its way across the island courtesy of the blast.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the island, the trio of Jack, Kate and Sawyer were equipped with hoods as part of their imprisonment by The Others.
Their plan to work in conjunction with Sayid, Jin and Sun – aboard Desmond’s boat – failed in every way. Michael had originally organised the trip in an attempt to rescue Walt, but Sayid had figured out that it was in fact a plan to trade certain members of their group for the young boy.
With the trio captured, Michael was allowed to leave with Walt on a boat, given directions by the sinister Henry Gale, leader of The Others. Hurley was instructed to return to camp and warn his fellow plane crash survivors to stay on their own territory.
Bizzarely, the episode ended with a sequence set on a snowy landscape in an unspecified location. Two men in a little hut receive a message on their computer stating “Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected”. They then picked up the phone and call a certain Miss Widmore to say they’ve “found it”. The lady was then revealed to be the ex-girlfriend of Desmond, whose turbulent relationship with her was shown in the finale’s flashback sequences.
Away from those shenanigans, we wonder whether Season Three will see Charlie finally kick his cocaine habit and Jin and Sun resolve their ongoing domestic issues. Well, if you call a desert island domestic. Above all - the one burning question we want to know is… when will the polar bear have his own flashback episode?
