I enjoyed the 2 episodes but didn't really feel like I could judge them as so much happened I still can't quite get my head around it! Juliet dying definitely took up a lot of screen time but I thought Sawyer did a great job with the emotion (agree about the Steely gaze though). The whole temple community took me by complete surprise, have they always been there!?!? @kam - In the original timeline Jack & Desmond both met training on the steps of some sports stadium.

i dont think its an alternate reality, think about it, i think the past has completely changed or smething, coz why the hell was desmond on the plane, and when jack saw desmond, he knew he had seen him before, and the same with sawyer, when sawyer was talkin to hurley there was that element that sawyer felt he knew hurley from before

If after all this time watching the show they do a 'dallas' on us I will be very miffed. Looks like they all land nicely at the airport and because time has been changed - nothing ever happened. A show about nothing.... I hope not.

I thought it was incredible : the first half was a little dull, but the second episode really made up for it! Completely agree with the Sawyer and Juliet comment. Terrible storyline and utterly unbelievable.

Thank you! A lot of people seemed to get carried away about the Sawyer/ Juliet thing. I thought that was really awful, and even the fabulous acting from both of them couldn't save it at all. The rest I thought was great!

I also feel too many people take the show too seriously... they fret over 'unanswered questions' that are no longer remotely important (food drops?? c'mon!) and hate characters based on jealousy ("Kate should die!! Why? Because she's hotter than me and she gets her pick of men!"). Yes we know Kate killed someone, but people love Ben and that's all he's ever done. It's way more fun just to enjoy the ride for the ride's sake. The show's almost over, time to let go of your hangups and enjoy it!!

Nobody's mentioned the Tailies! After 4 years, maybe we'll finally learn what happened to them! Why don't the kids appeared to have aged, though?

One or two comments to make on past comments: First, Will. I agree that the pre-credits CG did look a bit cooky and badly done. I'd expect more from todays technology and I certainly wouldn't be happy with that if I'd have created it. Secondly, Richard being a slave? It's a good idea, but a white slave in the late 19th century isn't really heard of that often, right? Anyway, loved the episodes, looking forward to the rest of the series.
Horace on February 7th, 2010
The comments about Richard's chains appear to confirm my long standing suspicions that he arrived on the island as a slave aboard the Black Rock. Loved the premiere episode - can't wait to see how this season unfolds.

the shit people come out with makes me laff..just watch the show, enjoy it coz its probably one of the most articulated storylines by miles and the acting is superb.

Loved this review. I am so glad intelligent people are finally speaking out about the Juliet situation. It was a great episode, but I think that death scene proved just how lucky we are that they got this couple off the show. Can't imagine having that kind of crap all season.

I completely disagree with the Sawyer/Juliet story. I thought it was done in a beautiful, moving way. You have to remember that they had effectively been a couple for the past three years of their lives, so had to show that emotion of how far they had come together. Well done Lost!

I loved the episodes but the effects of the pre credits fly through on the first episode were appaling. Like some thing off a PS1. Am I the only one?

I totally disagree with your opinion of the sawyer/juliet scenes. They were totally needed after the audience completely balked at the idea that Juliet was going to die alone down in a pit. It was wonderful that sawyer and juliet got to have a final moment. Plus, in your hate of that relationship.... er, scene.... you missed the important point that is appears Juliet was "on the other side". A wink from the writers that this is the first of perhaps many intersections between the realities.

How are people confused as to why Shannon wasn't on the plane? Originally she left the Australian dude and returned with Boone. This time, she didn't. Mystery solved. Most of us knew (via spoilers/filming reports) Maggie Grace wasn't going to appear, and her 'write out' reflected why. You have to remember things are different in this reality. Some things are similar, but some things are completely different. In the 'original' reality, the magnetic anomaly was destroyed in 2004 by Desmond. In this 'new' reality, the magnetic anomaly was destroyed in 1977, changing all subsequent events. Think of the 'butterfly effect'. They are giving us both a reset and a non-reset.

Great start to Season 6 :) cant wait for more Lost :D If the plain never crashed on the island then they would of never went back in time to of set the jughead off, so what ever the Dharma did to the (soon to be) swan station, it must of sunk the island. And it made it look like Des wasn’t on the plain because no one else seen him except Jack. Also most of the history is different maybe because Jacob wasn’t there to influence there lives or something like that. Or the guy that Hurley got the numbers from didn’t hear them because he would have never heard the transmission from the island, but that doesn’t explain how he got the numbers to play the lottery.

Yes, the Alias comparison is very good - the way to keep the show from simply becoming a parody of itself is to continually change the format (from "flashback", "others", "different times" and now "alt reality".) I absolutely adored "Locke"'s comment about how sucky the Oceanic survivors lives really were if they but realised it - the sequence with Charlie on the plane and after perfectly illustrated that, and even Locke and Shepherd at the Lost Luggage place worked. Overall, I thought this was a much stronger opening than almost any of the others (apart from the Pilot, of course), with some answers being offered without perhaps any actual explanations. As noted, only Sawyer and Juliet didn't really work, but otherwise it seemed well paced to me.

I say that the bomb itself never reset everything that happened - as we've established because we now have two very different realities - but obviously everything has gone wrong - and therefore so is this false reality. Shannon wasn't on the plane, because as Boone says when he went to get her, she said she didn't want his help - something she wanted the first time round - and this happened to create his connection to Locke (Heed the words: If we went down, I'd follow you to survive!) And the same with the numbers, the numbers are a connection to the island - but they didn't crash. Everything is wrong,

Lost was brilliant! I was particularly wondering, more than the rest - & something you never mentioned - was what a very possessed Locke meant when he knocked out Richard after saying "Good to see you not in those chains" Oh the questions!
Chris on February 6th, 2010
Shannon's absence was explained by Boone, saying she wasn't in trouble and had decided to stay in Australia. It's an alternate reality switch in the same manner as Hurley being the luckiest person in the world.

Okay: if Jughead exploded, yes it may have sunk the Island, but would also have wiped it out - ie, no sunken swings, houses or statues. So maybe it wasn't Jughead that did that. Of the statue: we don't know know what condition it was in in 1977, and if it was just a foot then or still complete. So the whole 'sunken island' thing is one big mystery: why, and WHEN. If the Island did go boom in the 70s, via Jughead or whatever, Charles Widmore (and Eloise Hawking) would have been killed. So neither Faraday nor PENNY would have been born... So whilst Des being on the plane is a head-scratcher, it had nothing to do with the Widmore's cos they don't exist. I would say Hurley being 'lucky' is pretty obvious, in that he never played the Numbers because his friend never heard them because they never played because there was no Island... his friend was therefore probably not even in the Institute. Whilst, incidentally, Danielle and Alex must be living a happy family life in France, because the research vessel never came across the numbers either. I DON'T understand why Shannon wasn't on the plane. Thew - anyone else agree/disagree with any of this? Part 1 was really slow; I didn't see the point of spending an hour digging Juliet out only to die anyway, and it lessened the impact of her slipping from Sawyer's grasp in the S5 finale. Part 2 was much better, but overall, I wanted to see more of Flocke-Smokey, Ben and Richard, which, ads removed and all strung together, only contributed to about 10-15 minutes overall. I guess Sayid as we know him is indeed dead, but wouldn't even attempt to guess who he is now. His death was ridiculous; Ana and Shannon barely had time to contemplate what had happened before dying, when shot, whilst Libby strang it out a bit but because the bullets went through the blankets first. Sayid would have been dead before Juliet even got sucked down the hole, never mind started whacking Jughead.

There are 2 issues I have with the "alternative reality".... Firstly, where was Shannon? She was on Flight 815 when it crashed, so why not now?? Also, Hurley has always claimed the numbers ruined his life and that they have brought nothing but bad luck - whereas on the flight he said to Sawyer that he only has good luck. For all other characters there back story was the same, so it made no sense.....

I disagree about the death scene, I thought it was beautiful, it seemed like Juliet was time tripping much like Charlotte when she died. Perhaps we'll see her and Sawyer go dutch on that coffee in the ALT?
JMTaylor on February 6th, 2010
Thought it was brilliant. Only bothersome thing is the cast look much older (esp Jack) in the alternate reality thread. Not much can be done about that. With Lost you just have to suspend your belief and go along for the ride.
Mikey, Norwich on February 6th, 2010
It was ok. Totally agree with comments about Juliet; they should have left her in Season 5 ; much more poigniant goodbye. The first episode was a bit slow, but I am sure it will have put lots in place for the rest of the season. I'm not so keen on the alternate reality though . . . . . .I want to see what happened to the characters who were shaped by the island, not those who have now never been there.

Thank you for expressing so well how bad the Sawyer/Juliet scenes were. Absolutely horrible.

Fantastic opener. I love how the flashback format has evolved over the six seasons into flashforwards, flashes through time and now flashes to an alternate reality. Someone's comments mentions continuity errors on the plane. The only one I could see was Desmond's presence. But one is forced to conclude that if the Swan hatch never existed due to the H bomb, Desmond would never have needed to be on the island to push the button. I'm looking forward to an explanation of his new story. What I now need answers to are: what chains was Richard in? why was the water in the temple not clear? what differences were there between Sayid's resurrection and Ben's healing when he was a boy? Finally will there be any consequences of Sayid and Ben being healed in the same way since it was Sayid who tried to kill Ben in the first place? I didn't mind the Juliet death scene. I realise it was necessary to get the "It worked" message, but I did feel that too much of the first episode was taken up by that. I enjoyed the similarities between what we have seen on the island and the what would have happened story: Boone saying he would follow Locke, Jack trying to fix people, the Marshall getting a head injury like he did on the plane, Sawyer and Kate's instant attraction etc. My only complaint - where were Michael, Walt, Shannon, the Tailies and Vincent? Looking forward to next week...

OKAY SO REMEMBER WHEN ALTERNATE JACK ENTERED THE BATHROOM AND HE HAD BLOOD ON HIS NECK? AND HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS SURPRISED TO SEE HIS REFLECTION. UNTIL SOMEBODY CAN TELL ME WTF IS UP WITH THAT THIS IS WHAT I'M GOING TO BELIEVE: THE ALTERNATE TIMELINE IS TRYING TO DESTROY ITSELF, OR MERGE WITH THE TRUE TIMELINE (ZEROTH OR WTF EVER YOU WANNA CALL IT TIMELINE WITH OUR HEROES ON THE ISLAND) BECAUSE THE UNIVERSE HAS TO COURSE-CORRECT ITSELF, WHAT IF, AFTER SOME EPISODES (SO WE CAN SEE LALALA WHAT WOULD THEIR LIVES HAVE BEEN LIKE LALALA) THE ALTERNATE TIMELINE FALLS IN ON ITSELF OR SOME BS LIKE THAT AND IDK

I don't think Sayid has been taken over by Christian. Rather I think he may now be a "vessel" of sorts for Jacob which would explain why Jacob sent Hurley there with him in the first place and also makes more sense with Sayid actually dying.

J.J. hasn't has any significant input in the show since Season 1/2. His name is just thrown in as an Executive Producer out of respect. Moving on from my nit-picking, although I haven't watched it since Wednesday, I remember the first hour being quite slow, and somewhat dull, but when put alongside the following hour, it was still boring and dull, but necessary to make LA X an overall brilliant episode - with the second part alone being truly outstanding. Although if I want to nit-pick some more about the first hour, there were too many obvious continuity errors on the plane, and I haven't watched it for over 5 years now! However, I may be jumping the gun somewhat, and with it being LOST, I suspect the guys know what they're doing, so there must be some reason behind them. I shall be waiting for the DVD directors commentary for a nice explanation.

I loved it. Loved everything about it - and yes, while there was a sense of deja vu with the Juliet death scene, Josh Holloway pulled off Sawyers despair so well it never felt irritating. Otherwise, completely agree with the review.
