I thought it was a great episode, loved Elisabeth Sladen's "possessed" acting and didnt find it stale at all.
The Avenger-London on October 22nd, 2009
I totally agree with the review. This was the worst story of the series ever. It was pure "scooby-do" and really bad scooby-do at that! if it doesn't improve soon end it-for everyone's sake!

I enjoyed this episode. I particularly liked Elisabeth Sladen's evil/sexy performance and the humurous touches, such as Tybo sticking firmly to the rules and slapstick corridor sequences with Rani's parents. Could of seen a bit more of Androvax, another fantastic addition to the monsters list, but overall a great opener to a trustingly great series.

I enjoyed the humour with the judoon and thought Elizabeth's performance as the veil inside SJ was well done. I thought it was a great first showing and look forward to watching the rest of the series with my daughter.

LOVED IT IT WAS BRILIANT AND ITS ONLY 2 WEEKS TIL TWOSJS

I really enjoyed this story. The development of the Judoon and humorous touches were well done. It also looked very slick production-wise. I thought the space ship was great a real shame it wasn't really used much. I do find Rani's mum a tad annoying though

DS! Normally I love and always agree with you, but this review is seriously harsh. It was one of the best episodes to date, had a brilliant mix of everything and the cast chemistry is amazing. The only point of negative script writing is the overuse of "Mum" from Luke.

There's no point trying to equate a children's programme with high-drama. This was a simple, easy to watch pair of episodes. If you're looking for anything more - well, you're looking in the wrong place. Great fun ;)

I feel that I must take issue over the comments. Had she not conveyed the *possession* (and that's what it was), in a manner that wasn't what the director had wanted, then it would have been *reigned in*. Elisabeth is an extremely capable and experienced actress and her true acting potential has as yet not been seen on television. Reviewers who do not understand the processes involved should remain quiet. In "The Lost Boy", Lis conveyed the loss of her child by a mother, and when possessed she has shown the degree of control and humour necessary in portraying another character other than Sarah Jane. Hats off yo you Lis and crew. As an opener it was brilliant and can only body well for whats to come.

I thought it evil Sarah Jane was great fun, and not overdone at all. You can definately go a little OTT when you're doing a kids programme!
Glyn. Stourbridge on October 19th, 2009
I thought the episode was the best yet. I am sorry to say itis not just my opinion but many others that your write up on the show is totally wrong. Although I must admit Elizabeth Sladens acting of being pocessed was a little ott.But the show was still good and I will give it 5 STARS !!!! BRILLIANT!!!! Glyn

My problem with this review is simple: 'Prisoner' fails to reach the creative heights of ‘Lost Boy' and 'Temptation Of Sarah.' when on earth does the season opener - something that has to introduce new viewers to whats going on and welcome back fans - broach the darkest topics? NEVER (not even bloody buffy was that dark it generally started its new seasons with pretty humourous affairs) I also had much love for parts of the episode - sarah and luke reprising the xylok system of 'purpose' was a brilliant call back and while we knew that mr smith wouldn't blow up it was interesting to see how far ahead the veil was thinking. Rani seems more comfortable and her parents look like they may be entering the main player field rather than being the comic bookends they had to endure being last year. the problem with this episode is simple - it fails to have the emotional arc of 'sontaran' from last year. but with no cast changes how do you replicate that kind of arc? - you can't so you show the 'joys' of why the kids do this - and like new earth critical reception may not be universal but damn i was impressed.

I agree with you Ben. I just didn't get Elisabeth Sladen's performance. It felt *really* false to me. I thought the episode was fragmented and not very exciting. Let's hope next week's episode is a bit better.
Bronagh, Ireland on October 18th, 2009
I think this review was spot-on. Her bad guy acting was just dreadful, the only original bits involved the judoon's hilariously dogged law-abiding.Yep, its spot on. I'm not an uber-Who fan, so my objectivity is intact here.

I loved Evil Sarah Jane! Very creepy and unusual! I loved the humorous performance from the Judoon! So funny! Cannot wait until the next episode! Looks dark and gripping. But I just cannot wait for episode 3 where The Doctor turns up!
Stephen James, Cardiff on October 18th, 2009
I was surprised with your review. It was a great story to start the latest season. Lots of laughs, great music and effects. I thought the possessed Sarah-Jane was played very well. Can't wait for the next adventure!
Laura, Cambridge on October 18th, 2009
Although I enjoyed it--not the best SJA, but I don't mind a bit of plot by numbers and some of it was amusing--the thing that jarred for me was the incongruity between Elisabeth Sladen's performance as the Androvax in SJ and the performance of the actor who was Androvax in his own body: why did Androvax become a growly hamtastic snake when he took over SJ? coinicide...duh production team for not picking up on that.
JL London on October 18th, 2009
This review is rubbish in my opinion. It was not the best story but Lis Sladen was excellent. In fact I would say she was superb. But this is just my opinion. Though it appears to be the majority!
Rex, Brighton on October 18th, 2009
Well... I know what you're saying, but because I grew up with Sarah, I can forgive her anything... :)
Alex - Essex on October 18th, 2009
I have to say that the first 2 parter didn't build up the excitement for me during the episodes , but it is of course designed for a younger audience in mind. I am going to continue to watch the rest of them on TV , specially the highly awaited 2 parter with David Tennant (The Doctor) in it. Can't wait for that.
Catherine, Pyrford on October 18th, 2009
I defo agree about Rani doesn't seem half as annoying as last time. I enjoyed the episodes and found them entertaining, however the Judoon's character was so inconsistent, you didn't know if he was gonna shoot them or talk to them! :-)
Daniel, Derby on October 18th, 2009
I loved Lis Sladen's "possessed" performance. Subtle it wasn't, but subtle isn't always what's called for - the script makes it pretty clear that SJ is behaving so strangely that no-one could possibly be taken in. I also liked the use of the Judoon for comic effect, particularly his perdantic insistence on observing the road laws. Lousy cliff-hanger, mind you, and not much of a plot.
Paul, Christchurch on October 18th, 2009
I think the review is a little harsh but there was definately too much of the possessed Sarah Jane and not enough of the real Veil. I liked the comedy with the Judoon though. An OK opener but I'm hoping for a lot better this season.
steve, UK on October 18th, 2009
That's funny we thought Elizabeth Sladen was rather good as the taken over Sarah Jane. What did you expect it was Sarah Jane but with a twist, she did well to add a number of mannerisms into her performance that were not part of the Sarah Jane character or indeed her own!
Joe, Leeds on October 18th, 2009
Another harsh review from Cult Spy. This is already better than all of Series 2 combined, everyone seems settled into their roles and it's all a load of harmless fun. Enjoy it!
Chris, London on October 18th, 2009
The wife was particularly fond of the Judoon's blind adherence to all laws and directives - the discussion, in their own language, about whether they had sufficient authority to open a door marked "No Unauthorised Access" was a particular highlight.
Steven Taylor on October 18th, 2009
I think that review is a bit harsh, the episode was quite good. The story was interesting and quite gripping, and Elizabeth Sladen played her part well, I thought. I'd say it's more of a 3/4 stars, 2 is way too harsh.
Simon, London on October 18th, 2009
I couldn't disagree more, about Elizabeth Sladen's portrayal of the Veil. Far from being 'OTT', I found it a rather measured & creepy performance; and it was certainly a refreshing change of pace, from her usual 'Lovely cup of Horlicks and a Werthers original' style Mum'siness. Daniel Anthony as Clyde is always on top form, so I only hope we see more Clyde-centric fare in the coming series. The Judoon's jobsworth attitude to obeying the rules provided some moments of genuine hilarity. Overall, I thought it was a good season opener, for what is, afterall, a kids show. Not too heavy - not too light. Just a bunch of fun. Top stuff! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Andy Essex on October 18th, 2009
Yes I'm 33 watched Doctor Who for years and have to confess I love the Sarah Jane Adventures and I force my kids to watch it! These two episodes were brilliantly scripted. If anyone saw the original "K9 and Company" from 1981 it's knocks the socks off it. Can't wait for the David Tennant Episodes in 2 weeks time!
Brad on October 18th, 2009
I thought it was good not great though :( I thought Elisabeth Sladen's acting when she was the veil thing was terrible
Ben, Lancashire on October 18th, 2009
I agree with everything. Sladen's performance as the veil was pretty rubbish tbh, which is a shame because as Sarah Jane shes always perfect. I thought she had a bad throat; the line "destroy Earth" bordered on cringeworthy. Saying that it is brilliant this show is finally back... and that we get the Doctor in two weeks :D
Lee, Preston on October 18th, 2009
unfortunately, I really disagree with this reviewer. Compared to past SJA episodes, this was by far the best. The 'creative heights' of The Lost Boy and the Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith is a pick of some of the worst stories, let alone the best. 'The Temptation..' reused the exact same storyline from Doctor Who's Series one outing of 'Fathers Day' and the Lost Boy had some of the worst acting since the shows pilot! For me, this episode was charming, funny and a perfect series opener, well above Series one and twos efforts.
Paul, Durham on October 18th, 2009
Oh I enjoyed it - the story was a fun romp, had good production values and was no worse than many episodes of Star Trek or old Who. I thought Sarah possessed by the alien was a hoot! Clyde is great. I like the new scheduling on Thursday and Friday too.
Jay, london on October 18th, 2009
totally disagree. this episode was fast paced and totally full of action. the use of rani's parents was comedy gold! I seem to remember digital spy's review on season 2 saying more should be made from them.
Mark, Bangor on October 18th, 2009
I thought this opening story of season 3 was terrific! Lis Sladen was OTT, sure, but I thought she played it perfectly (remembering that younger children easily have to tell the difference between 'good' Sarah-Jane and the 'bad' version). I thought the younger actors were better than ever, the Judoon were finally showcased almost as characters rather than monsters, and the cliffhanger of episode one was brilliant!
john, manchester on October 18th, 2009
The episodes were funny, inventive and well acted by LS, loved it!
Chris, London on October 18th, 2009
I'm not sure that Ben Rawson-Jones and I watched the same story. I loved it, and thought Lis Sladen's performance was absolutely cracking.
