A news bulletin on television features two distraught parents launching an appeal for their missing son Ashley – who looks exactly like Luke. Mr Smith then confirms that Luke and Ashley are a genetic match and the same person. Maria's mum Chrissie sees the report and alerts the police, who soon arrive on the scene and take Luke away, with his 'new' parents Jay and Heidi fuming at Sarah Jane.
Setting out on a new investigation, Sarah Jane explores the goings-on at the Pharos Project research facility where a number of experiments are being carried out into telekinesis. She encounters an arrogant child prodigy called Nathan and also learns that alien technology is being used.
Luke is not enjoying life with his new parents, finding himself cooped up in the unfamiliar surroundings of his bedroom, with no one allowed to visit. Clyde is turned away from the door, but finds out that Luke's new parents rate him as a good skateboarder – which Clyde knows not to be the case at all from previously witnessing his poor coordination. He is also given a photo of Luke, Jay and Heidi together which he later takes to Mr Smith for analysis. In a shock turn of events, the computer claims that he faked the photo himself and fires off a bolt of energy at the young lad, causing him to disappear.
Meanwhile at Luke's house, his supposed parents are meeting Nathan. Luke makes an escape attempt but is thwarted, with his captors then revealing their true forms as… the Slitheen. Nathan was in fact the child Slitheen encountered in the school, previously thought to have been blown up but managing to escape through teleportation. Their new compression suits have made their gaseous habits non existent now and they are out for revenge.
