The ending was fantastic, Ashes to Ashes has to be the best show on tv, lots of twists and turns that you think you know how it ends and then they throw a spanner in the works by having Gene in his style to get Bolly to wake up. Roll on series 3 for final showdown of this FAB show.

Not as good as Life on Mars, although I have watched the ending to LOM endless times and I STILL can't figure the bloody logic behind it , that's if any logic was intended. Back to Ashes to Ashes, needless to say, it had a lot to live up to, and most of the time it struggled relentlessly in the shadow of LOM, even Gene, Genie was a paler version of his former self, no doubt grudgingly accepting the onset of the political-correct corruptness beginning to rear it's over-the-top head. However, it has to be said that it needed to be treated as a seperate entity, and though there were times when I found myself longing for Sam Tyler to come walking through the doors of the London MET, like Raymondo's worst nightmare, some of the old magic was still there. I loved the 80,s backdrop, as I was an 80's teenager, so it was great nostalgia. The ending was far more simplified (ish), and although the air of mystery is still casting it's ominous cloud from LOM, I still need closure. Basically, WHAT THE HELL IS IT ALL ABOUT, AND WHAT IS THIS THING ABOUT SENDING COPPERS BACK IN TIME? Just a thought, but would,nt it be great if some copper went back in time to 1888, during the Jack the Ripper killing spree, with Philip Glenister as Inspector Abberline? Now the policing of Victorian London would make Gene Hunt look like Robo Cop.

Really enjoyed this series and loved the ending. But why do people want to see Gene Genie in 2009???? This would totally castrate the man. He belongs in his time. If he DOES end up being a character from the present then his no nonsense personality is all wishful thinking during his dream/coma. His acting was spot on, heartbreaking and totally convincing. I'm sorry to break any hearts but I don't believe he and Alex will or should get together either. Yes they have chemistry but that doesn't mean they would work as a couple. They work beautifully as colleagues. I can't BEGIN to pretend that I have any idea how this will all pan out but I just wanted to make those points. Bring on the next series and yes, PLEASE stop comparing Saint Sam to Alex. Different Actors, different characters.

The best thing they could do in series three is bring Gene Hunt to 2009 (or 2010) and he and Alex work in a modern police station and all the political correctness drives Gene crazy. Gene meets Molly, which knocks down the last obstacle to Gene and Alex getting together.

Unless they kill off the annoying Drake woman, this show is dead to me. Don't get me started on what they have done to the brilliant Gene Hunt- a former shadow of himself. Third series? End it now. RIP Life On Mars.

Only disappointing thing for this finale is that we didn't hear 'Ashes to Ashes' during the climatic scene. Haha. Apart from that another gripping series. :)

Sadly the AtoA series has included very similar situations and scenes to Life on Mars, suggesting that the writers could not come up with any more original ideas. They should address the questions left over from LonM rather than now adding more unanswered questions. I still watched it!

Great series finale thought the final touch was great it leaves a lot of questions to be answered in series 3 could Alex Have woke up but not realised that she was from 1982 all along or is this a waken dream and she could slip back into the coma anytime we will just have to wait and see.

i love ashes to ashes, series 1 was brillant, but series 2 was far better as get brillant and leaves you wanting more. can't wait for series 3

I thought the final episode was good but did anyone notice that in one scene they drove past a N reg (1996) Rover? I thought they could of at least discussed the car or move it.

Second series was tighter, darker and welcome; a few grating repetitions from Gene, making a bit of a pastiche, but never mind. An improvement. Should there be a third series? Absolutely not… An example of why: in concluding LOM, I considered “Annie” to be a part of Sam’s psyche (Thanatos/Eros), those final words perhaps even a dialogue between the self and the soul, an acceptance of death. The test-card girl, turning off the credits might have been the nurse turning off the life support. None of these opinions matter, of course. They are personal to me. What does matter, however, is that LOM was intelligent enough to leave space for interpretation and imagination for its viewers. It remains an excellent programme that endures because people like to talk about it, and think about how aspects may be interpreted. The idea that a third series will answer those questions fills me with dread. Another flat and trite idea of parallel universes or time-travel, will not only ruin the good work done on A2A, but also – more importantly – devalue the LOM product.

maybe both sam and alex have been dreaming they are from the future and are infact from the 70's and 80's respectively

Absoluately brilliant ending , I loved everything about specially when Shaz was holding a gun in a wedding dress and Summers , I think he really is a very interesting character and we got to meet the younger version which is really interesting to see , at the end of the episode I thought it ended but its great it is coming back in 2010 and filming is beginning very soon if not yet but they have to try and have series 3 even better now but it is going to be tough but i think it is going to really good , as they is something about Hunt...
S. Dunn, London on June 10th, 2009
I loved the ending. I'm convinced it's misleading - she hasn't woken in 2008, it's a coma-within-a coma. Logically (if there is any logic!) if Gene shooting Summers ends with him dead, then why would shooting Alex cause her to wake up? Can't wait for series 3. They def need to work on 'crime of teh week' element, it was sadly the element that let series 2 down which was a shame when they had massively improved the tone and tension. There were moments when I felt it was just filler until the finale - they shouldn't have killed Mac off so soon, there was definitely more fun to be had with him.

ashes to ashes is just not as good as life on mars. but the second series is even poorer than the first. wheres the creepy bits gone. why have all the personalitys gone bland. why is the script so poor now. why are the characters so inconsistant,in one episode we are supposed to beleive that alex would cover up a murder and chris would turn bad guy. both joined the police for the right reasons and both were utterly moral creatures that suddenly and for no reason at all were bereft of all there scruples. when we watched the rubbish show 'demons' we wondered how the same team could have made life on mars. now we know, look what theyve done to it. i know they have a story they want to get finished - life on mars was supposed to run 5 seasons but john sim bailed. leaving them high and dry. but now theyve jumped the shark. they should have left it at the end of mars.

Great episode for 55 minutes - first class!!!! Really disappointed with the last 5 minutes though - it was dreadful... I feel ive been cheated... It could have been so much more... They could have brought Gene Hunt and his squad to her bedside with her daughter, they could have done this but have the daughter with her in the 80s, the list is endless... I cant believe it ended like that!!! Shocking

Fantastic finale to a fab series, can't wait for the next! As for the plot for the new series??? - Gene Hunt joins Alex in the noughties and the series title - "Jump They Said"! and so the Bowie theme continues unabated! Alternatively they could move the show on by half a decade and Alex and Gene meet again in 1987 - series title - "5 Years"! ......................................................and the final idea - the Gene Genie and Alex are transported to a time when all women are struck down with terrible bouts of P.M.T. - series title - "Queen Bitch"!!! lol I wonder which they'll pick???? Keep those Bowie songs on the boil and fire up the Quattro!

I love Raymondo! It's just the way Gene says it! The last episode was amazing. I watched it like 3 times in a row. I just kept rewinding it! The ending was great but frustrating ... I don't want to wait a whole year until the next series! Gene and Alex's chemistry is so real but I think that if they actually do get together it won't be as gripping. Philip is an amazing actor, it almost made me cry when he listened to that tape! When Shaz appeared in her wedding dress I was willing them to play "White Wedding"! It was hilarious! Can't wait for series three. I've already got withdrawal symptoms!

graham i love your thinking. it actually makes a lot more sense than my theroy. i bet your right. if it is i think its a clever idea. especially as there is more to gene than meets the eye. plus hes such a good character he deserves something more. i hope both aspects of your theroy are true - but maybe the second part that they characters are staff in the hospital might be part of it or not. i reckon your definatley closest on the theroy front. i wish id come up with those.
Tracey Nottingham on June 9th, 2009
How cruel - build all that chemistry and do nothing with it! arrrrrrrrr ! They have to get together again in some decade so that Gene does get that beautiful lady he needs and she gets the bloke who can stand up to her feistiness ! Excellent, Excellent and Excellent - Roll on A2A series 3

...never realised what a cult following this programme had! It would be quite poetic for Gene Hunt to be brought into the present with his team, but the writing would be difficult, placing his cop style in today's ultra PC world...one question I was wondering was what happened to the guy who shot Alex in the first place?...or who killed Sam Tyler in LoM?..there must be some material for the writers to work on away from the stereotypical blags and murders? tha would concentrate on the central characters, especially iF Sam and Annie could be included the opportunities would be endless!...but all in all Monday evenings will be less interesting without A2A on to watch...let's just hope that series 3 blows us all out of the water....

GR8 EPISODE GREAT ENDING SHE GT TO SEE HER DAUGHTER AGAIN BUT STILL LEAVES IT OPEN FOR HER TO RETURN TO THE 1980'S PURE GENIUS :)

i love the show. despite being a 90's child (sadly). i love the 80s except the hair and sometimes terrible fashion anyway th emusic throughout teh series was great. highlights of the ep aslo shaz in her wedding dress saving chris and ray and the willy. that was hilarious. i like keeley and anyone who says otherwise needs to stop comapring her 2 john. tbh i prefer ashes to ashes to life on mars plus the 80s was far better. i think the end with the robbery was a let down. but when gene shot alex , was a really touching moment. its so obvious they have feelings for each other i wish they'd admit it. they'd be so great together and its about time gene fell in love. i think gene makes the show and phillip is a brilliant actor. again it was a poignant moment when him and alex agrued. you just want them to end up together. the end was briliant and highlight of the ep and maybe even the series. just when you thought she was back in normal time gene's face popped up on the screens. it was not only hilarious but satisying i'm please her and gene wil get teh chance to give it another go. on end of ashes to ashes therioes i somewhat agree with the idea of gene being in a coma and him and alex meeting. (yet hed be old) but maybe that body where the nurse says "he was a very angry man" was future gene. coz i believe gene and the other's really did exist especially has he was the officer who took young alex's hand in the first series. and maybe future gene (who viewers must realise the presnt day is over 25 years in the future of ashes to ashes so gene is like 65-75 years old) so maybe its not likely theyll get together especially has hes dead - if it was him. mind u its just a theroy. if it is true maybe because alex died in the past (when she gets back to the future - if she does she'd leave in the past) it sent him angry so matches the body of "he was a very angry man". if this theroy is true it changes the whole idea of life on mars and ashes to ashes. if this idea is true maybe if alex gets back to the future she'll track down the future selves of the characters. obv a dead gene if that was him or an alive gene if it wasnt. i hope that makes sense it sounds confusing but i understand it. plus i have a thing for gene and i dont know why. i had a dream about him the other night.

I've got my own theory that Sam Tyler and Alex Drake are comatose dreams of Gene Hunt who is the only one who is real. Series 2 finale had Gene Hunt saying to Martin Summers as he lay dying to hold on to the memory of his younger self as a spick and spam good copper. Gene Hunt admired the young Martin Summers and did not know he was a bent copper, only Alex Drake did, I think this implies that Gene Hunt knew this was the older Martin Summers. Series 3, lots of twists and turns, but its Gene Hunt that wakes up in the present and the others are just the people that work in the hospital! Just a theory!

BRILLIANT! Loved the whole A2A series so far. I was shocked that Gene shot Alex and sent her back to the future, but was in hysterics when Alex woke up in the present and saw Gene everywhere - fantastic! Just read that BBC have comissioned the 3rd series and I can't wait. Message to the writers....can you PLEASE show us Shaz and Chris's wedding? After watching Shaz blow away the bent copper trying to kill Chris I think it's only fair for us to find out if they really do make it down the aisle. As for the tension between Gene and Alex, well, anything could happen, but I just hope that the final series will bring a happy ending for them both.

Totally superb! I don't think any one would have predicted that once Alex got back to the present day the 'Gene Genie' would ever appear in her life again. Any one can watch any T.V. show & find fault. I think last night was very good & kept the unsuspected twists right to the last minute. I also agree your review was 'harsh' I only wish people would stop comparing Keeley Hawes to John Simms. Different characters, set in a different time. Keeley in my opinion is a very good actress. She deserves much more credit for her major part in this programme. Gene Hunt is the best thing to happen to T.V. for years. Can't wait to the next series.
Tim, London on June 9th, 2009
"Rambling on about figures from the future to her bemused (if fictional!) colleagues while punching Gene in the face only served to diminish one's yearning for her to have a happy ending. " She wasn't exactly in the best position, Ben, she was forced into talking, even though it ended badly (as obviously it would) There wasn't any smugness there at all. She punched Gene because he accused her of being a bad mum. Well done, Alex!

What an ending, I can't believe we have to wait a whole year to find out what happens next!!!! The best show on the box without a doubt, roll on series 3!!!!

Great show - pity that someone on the production team didn't move the green Rover car (made late 90's) out of shot parked in front of Rays car before he tore off after the security van. Sad I spotted it - I know. Sorry
Josie, London on June 9th, 2009
I think it was absolutely brilliant and I LOVED it!!! My take on it is that she cant die in 1982 and survive in 2008 since Summers died at the end in both era's, therefore she will have to go back to 82 and come back to the present another way like Sam did. I am also secretly hoping that it turns out that Gene is in a very deep coma and at the end of series 3 they see each other in present day - aahhh!!!! I did see on wikipedia that Philip Glenister said that there is indeed going to be a third and final series - with that ending - there can't not be!

Brilliant! I was a bit underwhelmed by the whole bent coppers storyline to, but overall the series has lived up to its predecessor(s) very well indeed.

That was a mind-melting finale. So Alex is now in a coma within a coma?! Just brilliant. Can't wait for Season 3. I totally agree about the fabulous acting by Phil - the sense of betrayal made me feel so sorry for him. There were some great laughs too though.
Rich, Hull on June 9th, 2009
Your Finale review is far too harsh in my opinion. The episode moved at the right pace and reached a satisfactory, no execellent ending. The music in the finale was spot on to the action on screen. And what now for Gene, is it him needing Alex to survive, is he looking to 'get back' ?? I've loved this second series of A2A and want the third as quickly as possible now.
Lynn, Brighton on June 9th, 2009
I loved this series, especialy Keely Hawes. Philip Glenister is a genius but Keely really makes the series, especially their connection. It would be fantastic if Gene appears in 2008 even for just a few episodes before going back to the 80's. It's as bad a waiting for the last series of Lost, how am I going to survive until next year ....

Little disappointed in the ending. Would have preferred Gene to have been shot and ending up in the future with Bollie. Very entertaining to see Gene in the here and now. Still looking forward to the 3rd series though
