Loved it, even if I had convinced myself frrom the week before's trailer that Gene would be shot and wake up in the present day...... When Alex knew 'where' she was having read Sam's notes and when told Gene she was from the future I guessed that woiuld be enough knowledge for him to end up in 2008/9. Still never mind - can't wait for season 3!

Still didn't get my Gene/Alex kiss which I have been desperate for but hey ho! I have seen a piccie that shows 3 Audis, one from the 70s, one from 80s & a new one so that suggests to me that Gene is coming to the present - hope so, need more Gene!

Great series overall and a very enjoyable finale. Roll on series 3!

After reading your article - I wouldn't personally go as far as to give the show 4 stars, 3 at most. The reasons for very much listed above. I agree with all of your comments but feel i must disagree with the 'being left on a high' bit, yes, that did knock the fourth star on the rating. It would be unfair to compare it to a summers 'life on mars'. Life on Mars was indeed the bench mark and a novelty. One of a kind. A look into the world of Limoland. I must say, as programmes go, this is the second show to make me shed a tear, the first being Quantum Leaps finale. It was a tragedy, Life on Mars wasn't a happy story, it was a tragic story. After living in his 70's world, Sam longing to return home, only to get home and find it wasn't quite all the fun and games he had in his 70's world.... and then commits harry carry to get back to it. So sad. From the start of Ashes to Ashes you can't help but think 'would this be like life on mars?, would it deep further into the mystery of limbo land? would the legend of sam tyler still live on?'. This was short lived, made very aware after the first half hour. Alex drake, shot in head, sent back to 1981 in a coma, fully aware she has been shot, recognises names from Sam's diary notes, meets the legendry Gene Hunt and his band of merry men, but very aware of why she see's them, whats going on and starts to quickly jump on the road of recovery, goes along with it - going through the motions. This made me feel that there could be an underlying twist. With episodes 3 and 4 leaving me quite uninspired and the rest of the series barely staying afloat, held up by the wonderful "Huntisms" (thats a classic phrase you have invented and i hope to see it in the next Dictionary edition), i could see that this was all so la-de-dah. so perfect, text book to how Alex wants it to be. She finds herself narrating the 'motions', explaining to herself that events are happening because thats how it goes, this is the way forward. This is when i began to feel that maybe there is a hidden twist... its all just too perfect. Is this going to have that fairytale ending and wake up to her daughter or wake up and find herself paralysed and/or brain damaged? One thing is for sure, i would glady see a third series to keep alive the Gene Genie as i feel we may not be seeing a third version of Mr Hunt, in any time period unless the series writers find a more satisfying ending than leaving you more confussed than ever before (well Lost has lasted for 5 series so far....there is every chance!) - Will she wake up from the dream inside the dream or will Alex Drakes mind be lost in eternal Coma Limboland? Roll on Series 3. ......then series 4, in the 90's with Gene Hunt in Shell Suit and Rebok Pumps with the multicoloured laces behind the wheel of teh Ford Escort MkII , cue the Dr Alban and East 17 tunes.

It was good not as good as life on mars. I wanted alex to stay with gene. Gene was harsh about Sam and alex calling them weirdoes somehow if she is in a coma in the 80s does that mean she is not really from 2009 hopefully Sam Tyler will return with annie great tv show so far

there was a huge loose end that I can't work out. I had my own theory...the guy who shot Drake phoned someone and said he was going to tell Drake why her parents were really killed. Who was he phoning and why? I had a theory that he was phoning Hunt. In an earlier episode Hunt told the young Drake that he would look out for her and to come to ... Read morehim if she ever needed anything (that seemed to be a REAL memory). I had a hunch that Hunt had been watching over her since she was a little girl and he hid the truth of her parents death from her, to protect. Then the bloke that shot her threatened to tell her and I thought he would be by her bed when she woke up but for real...not on a bloomin' monitor!??? If there isn't another series then the ending just didn't work for me :0(

That was a fantastic ending! Really enjoyable episode. Its annoying though that there are still so many questions. Mainly - How are they going to continue that? WILL they even continue that? or is it Gene Hunt in the 90s? That would be fun. A great aspect of Ashes to Ashes was the fact that Alex seemed to 'know' that she was in a coma. The real difference was that we never really knew what was happening to Sam Tyler in Life on Mars. The viewers must have agreed with Alex, that she was infact in a coma but in the classic Life on Mars - Ashes to Ashes writing style we are still asking ourselves 'what the hell is going on? Was she in a coma in 2008? or is she now in a coma in 1982?' oh and of course the biggest question 'When are Gene and Alex finally going to get together!?'. In any case im sure that the writers will deliver a great third series if they havnt decided to move on to the 90s. Either way the next instalment will be a must see in my opinion. Great job with Ashes to Ashes!

I love every single second of this programme and am now in deep mourning for the loss of Gene Hunt in my life. I contacted the Beeb to see if there was going to be a 3rd. series but they were very non-commital saying there was no comment so far. Please, please put us all out of our misery and tell us that there will be. Wouldn't it be just great if Gene came into the future i.e. now and out us all right. Wonder what car he'd drive ?

I loved it! First rate drama from the BBC - now THAT'S why I'm happy to pay my licence fee! A cracking series and a cracking finale. It twisted and turned like a twisty turney thing. One plea, though, to Matthew and Ashley - please, please don't keep us waiting for another full year! The gap between Series 1 and Series 2 was torturous enough. Don't make us suffer like that again!!

Ashes to Ashes suffered in the early episodes and I wondered how it could live up to the fantastic Life On Mars....but it recovered toward the end of the second series to an amazing finale...can't see how Gene Hunt can be as good with Chris Ray and the rest....maybe a90's version with a new Alex or Sam character?...but I want more of Gene and the team....please BBC...
Sam Tyler - 1978 on June 8th, 2009
So is Bollie in a coma in 2009 becuase she is now in a coma in 1982? They have to bring in the story of Annie and Sam up to date or if Sam is dead will Annies make and apearance?
Stefan Davey on June 8th, 2009
Genius!! Thats all i'm saying

Loved it, and forgive it all the failings you outline in your article, because it's so riveting. The Gene/Alex relationship is the main draw for me, but the other characters are engaging too.
andy/yeovil/someret on June 8th, 2009
Brill finale but the scene with gene, bolly and summers was a bit on the feeble side but oh, the ending was ace! cant wait for the next but final series next year!
Bizzylizzy on June 8th, 2009
I have a feeling that Gene will come through to the present, but will return to his time ( think cpt jack in torchwood when he went back to his own time....hopefully a giant smooch too like) whilst alex stays in the present day. Dear me I can't wait!!!

That episode definitely had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I really, really want Alex to get back to Gene - they can't be forever thinking they hate each other, not after the connection they had! Not happy with the ending, especially as we have to wait a year or more to find out what happens!!!!
maria, belfast on June 8th, 2009
cracking show, cant wait to series 3 of ashes to ashes, bring it on
Matt, Surrey on June 8th, 2009
it was totally awesome, the next series could be soooo good, with life on mars and this the objective was the same...get home....now what does she do?! go back to 1982 and help Gene or stay at home and ignore....whatever happens will be the best tv of 2010! and this was certainly the best thing on in 2009!
daniel leicester on June 8th, 2009
bit of a silly end but as with Doctor Who i like silliness. Alex is from 2008 but in a coma. In her coma she dreams 1982 but is now in a coma...easy...or is it. Since episode 7 of series 1 Ashes to ashes has been superb and much improved.
LittleMissMon, London on June 8th, 2009
The "Come round your house and stamp on your toys" line was from Life on Mars - when Hunt tells some kids to watch out for his car and warns them of the consequences if they don't....a nice shout out!
