‘Merlin’, which was aired last Saturday at 6:30pm, was a huge success. BBC has got a massive hit on their hands and has lived up to expectations of their previous hit show ‘Robin Hood’. I think that it is great family entertainment.

It wasn't Eve Myles singing. She was miming to the soprano Emma Brain-Gabbott. That was the best bit. The show's a bit silly but I don't think it's meant to be serious!

It wouldn't be so bad if they'd called it "jack the sorcerer"; then we wouldn't be so disappointed: I was expecting it to be about the Merlin & Arthur & Uther & Morgaine etc., that I already know about.

I Love Merlin an dhave never missed an episode, nor do I plan to.

It's teatime entertainment for a Saturday, so of course it's not gonna be the best budget-wise or dialogue/narrative/special effects, or whatever, but 'tis still entertaining, and I suppose that's all that matters in a tv show. I think Colin Morgan's wonderous, and it's good that they're having Merlin as a young person; the old wizard-type guys're cliched now, what with DUmbledore, Gandalf, etc...I also enjoy the sexual tension between Merlin and Arthur...just a shame that the BBC'll not follow that plotline, see above RE teatime drama. Anyway, I likes it, and not just for all the yaoi potential:) *Laughs* It says to type in the word 'Balzac'!!

What a refreshing tv performance by a talented bunch of actors!

I am totally hooked on the series , but I would like to if Eve Myles was really singing in the first episode? What was the song and how do I get hold of it??
Neil, Shrewsbury on October 2nd, 2008
Amateurish, lazy, low-reaching, tat.
Brendan, Plymouth on September 29th, 2008
The CGI is rubbish, the plot of the series predictable (The premise of every episode will be Merlin protecting Arthur. Merlin will fall for Guin but learn he has to get her to love Arthur) and some of the logic baffling; The dragon flies off at the end of the conversation despite being chained to a rock!

This show is awesome, we love it.

After one episode, I'm hooked. I really enjoyed it. Colin Morgan is great, and one to watch out for. I'm so looking forward to Saturday evenings again. Eve Myles was fab too, (as she always is). I hope that people who say that its poor and that they wont watch again, will just "magically disappear" and let those who appreciate good Saturday night TV enjoy the programme.

I really enjoyed this first episode as I adored the Robin Hood series I thought this could certainly come even near to rivaling it. But with Jonas Armstrong leaving maybe it could. A very talented cast especially Katie Mc Grath and the versatile Colin Morgan from theatre to Dr. Who an exciting new talent.

Awful. Can't take Anthony Head seriously, couldn't take a liking to any of the characters overall, wasn't particuarly impressed with the plot. Only thing that kept me tuned in was Eve Myles, and that was because i wanted to hear if she was going to actually sing. Not a chance in hell I'm watching that again.

It's superb! Merlin has made my top ten after just one episode. Bring on Saturday, can't wait for more. It's wonderful to have a light-hearted take on the King Arthur legend at last.

So the witch a.k.a. Gwen-from-Torchwood had enough magic to disappear in a puff of smoke but couldn't save her son from execution?
Cy Bones, Kent on September 23rd, 2008
A good start although the pacing did feel a little off for most of the episode. Some parts of the plot needed to be explored a little more but this would not have fitted into the 45 minute time slot. Pacing aside, the story was well scripted and acted by all. I am sure that the target audience will be tuning in again next week to see how events unfold.

Perfect Saturday night entertainment, brilliant special effects, excellent acting and very funny in places. To all you moaners out there, get a life or taste, whatever is easier.
Bruce Frey on September 22nd, 2008
It was really horrible and predictive. They actors were not good at all especially the merlin chap.
Izzy, Warwickshire on September 22nd, 2008
Amazing! I loved it. Can't wait 'til next week.
Justin, Sheffield on September 22nd, 2008
Merlin, Keep the magic secret. (PLEASE). BBC, can you please keep Merlin a secret and don't air another minute of this awful, awful tatt. Merlin rewrites arthurian legend and turns it into grange hill in the dark ages. to quote a much better BBC program, what a load of old Sh*t.
Lee, Teesside on September 22nd, 2008
Personally I enjoyed it, and I'm not normally a fan of these Saturday evening costume dramas. For those who think this was supposed to be a lesson in history or have special effects on par with a 150 million dollar movie, well you've only got yourselves to blame. It's a TV show, with a British TV budget and designed to appeal to young children as well as less cynical adults. Get over yourselves.

I found it most agreeable viewing with excellent characters and acting. A MUST watch for me!

One Word RUBBISH!!!
Emily Carding, east Sussex on September 22nd, 2008
Wonderful cast, reasonably awful writing, appaling lack of research. Dearie me. There's something about it that will compell me to watch next week, just to rant at the screen about how WRONG it is! I don't mind a little creativity in changing the legend, after all nothing is fixed for sure, but REALLY...

As first eps go I really enjoyed it. I was dreading another leaden lump like Robin Hood - which promised much but I felt delivered very little - but I found myself engaging with Merlin a great deal and the characters show promise. Hopefully it'll build on its solid base to become unmissable, although I see they're already doing a "Doctor Who" on it and messing it about in the schedule! The announcer (at least on BBC Scotland) said next week's episode would be at 6pm. Expect a large drop in viewers as a result - which of course all the naysayers will say 'proves' it's pants. That would do a disservice to it. Yes, it isn't up there with Who but I suspect the involvement of some of the Who team will help lift it to must-watch TV. After all the first ep was directed by James Hawes, Russell T Davies got a thank-you in the credits and Julie Gardiner is involved. We also all need to bear in mind that Who took a one or two eps to find its feet before really hitting stride mid-way through its first run.

Saw the repeat yesterday as I missed it cause I was watching LoTR: TTT on C4. This was about average to me - awkward acting from the man who plays Merlin, expositional and cringeworthy dialogue, passable to sub-par CGI, PC casting for Gwen and some scenes aren't well written IMO(like the opening speech at the beheading - they could've done it differently and alot better). From what I read in The London Paper, I expected it to be worse than Robin Hoodie, but I disagree - I hated that but this is an alright way to spend 45 mins to me. It had good acting from Eve Myles and Anthony Head, good sets, interesting plot - if not original, suitable threat from the antagonist (and quite dark), fun, lightheartedness (some funny parts) and hopefully some room for improvement.

granny, london on September 22nd, 2008
I find it hilarious that people criticise its apparent lack of historical accuracy seeing as it's set in a world of dragons and much of the Arthur legend was invented in the Victorian era anyway! As to the show, I found it OK family fare and the pilot was much better than that for Robin Hood.
Jez Atkinson, Manchester on September 22nd, 2008
Leaden, predictable plotting and unimaginative dialogue made this a maddeningly poor opening episode. Surely the producers should have insisted on a tauter and more imaginative opening than this. Only the excellent cast kept the show afloat and I hope they get better scripts and packer storylines in subsequent weeks.

I thought it was a good start to a promising series and I thought it was nice to see the hero as antagonistic rather than passive.

It just didnt feel magical enough to me - needs more potions and spells rather than telekinesis
Nick, Plymouth on September 21st, 2008
Not quit sure what the target audience is meant to be for this new adaptation. Having said that, it was generally entertaining and Colin Morgan in the title role is well cast. Like any new series, it will undoubtedly take a little time to become established viewing but it undoubtedly has potential to become a Saturday night audience winner. In the hope that the action becomes less pedestrianised as the series progresses, this should be good viewing as the winter nights draw in.
