Okay, Okay, 1st; Primeval sucked!! 2nd; I do sorta agree that the Merlin being dead part was a bit...erm...lacking in emotional weight, but it's teatime television aimed at a young audience. And it's mainstream, too; were it for a niche audience, then there'd have been a much more emotastic scene. 3rd; the special effects don't really bother me. There's more important things in a tv show. 4th; Merlin and Arthur are a much better couple than Merlin and Gwen. 5th; I think it's funny that people like Phil from Sheffield spend som much time typing about a children's tv show that they don't like. Just don't watch it!! 6th; Colin Morgan for the win:)

This was such an entertainign and thrilling episode. However, I strongly disagree with Phil from Sheffield. The CGI effects in this episode were not fantastic but acceptable. I don't look at it and think 'what a disgrace? It doesn't look realistic enough etc.' Besides, CGI in Primeval were not up to this standard in certain episodes. Michelle Ryan portrayed Nimueh pleasingly good. Her ability to change emotions quickly and create chemistry with the other characters is enjoyable to watch. You seem to be missing the point of this show - it doesn't follow historical fact closely, it changes many things to suit it and it is meant to be entertaining. I would not have enjoyed the series so far if it wasn't for its comedic adn 'cheesy' lines and scenes. This programme is meant to be magical and I think that is exactly what it is. It is based on a younger audience as well as those who complain about special effects and so called 'forced relationships.' I understand that it can be a tad 'cheesy' and 'obvious' and some parts, but you shouldn't really take this series seriously. It is purely saturday night family entertainment, at its best quality. I enjoyed this episode of merlin, it is definitely setting the scene for more gripping episodes in the future.

Good review. Completely agree. Michelle Ryan's performance was great, especially her vacillating show of emotions, and the episode was very enjoyable all-around. This is shaping up to be some very nice fantasy.

Its a about time the BBC took a chance on some great SCi fi cult drama. This is great TV.

I agree with Maisy (one of the earlier commentators). Although I liked the episode all of them have been pretty good-actually my fav has been the third one so far. And what is with your CONSTANT bashing of the Gwen/Merlin interaction? I think their interaction is very cute, although somewhat doomed (if she is to really end up with Arthur) but "forced?"-I disagree. If anything seems a bit overkill, it is Morgana constantly talking to Arthur like he's interested in her in a way more than siblings- which he clearly isn't. Honestly, so far he's shown more emotion towards Merlin than either of the girls (which is disappointing to me because I do want him with Gwen).

I really did like this episode, but never really felt the fear that Merlin was actually going to die. With him being the main character, and a (kind of) historical one at that, you know he can't die yet. But other than that, pretty cool episode.

America take note. This is how it's done. So many of the big US shows are losing steam, thank God for Merlin!

Another great nail bitting episode... I can't wait to see more of what Nimueh can do and it seems that everyone is starting to agree Merlin is getting better , great part was when I thought Merlin was dead! but when he awoke to continue his adventures I was happy as he will continue with great adeventures ahead...

Best episode yet. Finally seeing the king in Arthur, brilliant build up to how his character is meant to be. Great idea for an episode, and well acted. Congrats, BBC, what a success.

Couldn't disagree more. Worst to date, easily, thanks to dreadful dialogue, idiotic characters, and idle direction. Every line spoken smacks of complacent writing, with Nimueh's half hearted speech in the caves the worst hit section. The "Merlin, dead?" scene is a repeat of scenes found adorning every fantasy and sci-fi of the last 30 years, and the dreadful lines given to the characters at this point make it not only unoriginal, but a painful, shallow copy of former triumphs. As noted in your review, Uther's characterisation is stupid, with his commanding Merlin to drink potentially poisonous wine after the boy had saved Arthur several times AND been the one to suggest the wine could be poisonous is the dumbest means of plot development television has seen since Crossroads finished. Then there's Nimueh, who apparently "had to know Merlin would be the one to drink it" despite the fact that Arthur very nearly drank it several times before Merlin burst in (in a pathetic attempt to build up tension; "Will he drink it? Won't he drink it? Ooh, I'm excited!") and that Bayard himself actually OFFERED to drink it (and had several men of his own to have their lives risked), and also "knew" that Arthur would ride to get it despite Merlin being simply a manservant and Uther trying to stop him. Not only that, but she actually led him to the flower... why? Did she want him to die? If so why did she not just kill him? What in god's name was the point in helping him to foil her own plans, simultaneously revealing more about herself? She's got to be one of the worst villain's in history! Still, at least we didn't have another "Dragon Question Time - Your Weekly Chat with Scaly John Hurt With Wings", the brief interlude the three previous weeks have crowbarred in which seems only to a) test Colin Morgan's skills against a green screen and b) say "We can do dragons, aren't we cool". And what went wrong with the CGI this week? Now, I know it's better than British television could come up with a few years ago, but after Primeval's incredible demonstrations of modern computer imagery, how is it that the Beeb can't muster the same quality of effects? After a positive mysterious start for Nimueh last week, she's now reduced to a 2D femme fatale, having clearly used up Michelle Ryan's acting ability to make the poison. It's not her fault, she's given a bad script to work with anyway. Another bland solo act trying to take down the heroes in one blow to show us how powerful magic is, like every other episode. Stuff the power, let's see some teams. Not every supervillain works alone, and I want to see some covens performing rituals, reacting as a group to the magic, the enemy and each other. You can't always sacrifice quantity for quality.

I give the episode 4 stars but your review one. The episode first: It's good, but i have enjoyed all the episodes of the series really so it wasn’t any huge step up. I was greatly disappointed with Ryan's performance. It was not as engaging nor as depthful as I was expecting [as a fan of the prematurely axed Bionic Woman] and I feel she was outperformed by the younger cast members. As for your review I disagree with many points. I don’t think that Gwen and Merlin’s romance is “forced” I am rooting for them to get together. I found your criticisms about the direction as unfounded and pretentious alienating your readers.
