was looking around the net for info on merlin and had to comment, there are far too many people wanting a "gay twist" in the storyline, granted the show doesn't stick strictly to the true story of merlin and king arthur, but that would just be a complete slap in the face for a story that can be traced back around 1500 years, there are too many directors / "writers" who rewrite history to fit there ideas, and a far greater number of people who unfortunatly cant tell the difference between entertaining pseudo history and what actualy happened. also on a slightly unrelated note "strangerinthenight" needs to stfu and get a life, there are so many things that irritate me to my very soul about the way and what you have written. to make a comment like "US TV shows are for those below 80 IQ" which is one of the most ignorant things ive read in a while, and to then bastardise our language like you've done, please next time you go to a confrence on the other side of the world via "Concords Business class" buy a damn english book, or at least learn some modern grammer skills.

US TV crosses me - but I admit to be a Buffy and Anthony Head fans - he is hot ! I was just 12 then. 'never had the inclination to watch US shows, save Fringe and BBC documentaries and Charlie Rose once in a bluest moon. US TV shows are for those below 80 IQ, save Charlie Rose. The "others" - the powers that be had to be talking down to 307 million Americans. Shame of the highest order ! I was in London for 2 weeks for conference @ Lloyd's , and the coffee line in the morning, the conversation was "Merlin". Good Lord, how many times that "story be told". Bloody Brits must be have a lot of time in their hands. Pity ! On my way home, Concords business class, it's the same old wives tale topic - Merlin. . . . jeebuzz. After long rehearsed persuasive arguments for tomorrow's settlement, for a brief respite, I turned the TV on - it was Merlin ! Episode 9 Excalibur. Oh oh, 'grabbed the remote and "click". Off to bed earlier than usual. 2 weeks and the coffee line was the same rat race about "what his name". Worst whining than the Recession - "what's his name" was not on". Soon there will be rebellion ! I went to my office, locked the door and for the briefest of moment, we had conference about the oral arguments, motions, settlements, valuations etc. What a relief ! OK, I can't deal with this anymore - what and who is "Merlin" - and what is big gaga about this series, after all, I have outgrown "Knights of the Round Table" . I no longer dreamt of being Guinevere. I feel out of the loop, no one wants to talk about statistics and actuaries anymore. everyone in my Unit, practically knows the dialogue. So I bought the DVD today. $100.00 bucks ! So I joined the cult. Come Monday, I'll say out loud Merlin's "it's my destiny"; i begged for my life, not my mothers' nor Gaises", or Arthur's "there is something special about you Merlin, i can't put my finger on it or "it's my duty!; or Gaises "long scientific process"; or Uther's " you came to get your wish - "the father not the son"; or Morgana's "would you follow your father's order or that of a lowly servant; or Guinevere's "ask Merlin, anything. . . . well . . . . . anything"; or Nimeuhs' "the balance of life must be restored", or Arthurs' life is not destine to die in my hand" and last but not The Great Dragon's "it may amazed you Merlin, but my knowledge of you is not universal" or this special dialogue "i am more than a friend, i am your kin". Since then, I ditched "Fringe" for a while, and stayed with "Merlin". BTW, the author's imagination has gone awry. No such thing as "gay inferences", at least not in my view. Well, may be in other's interpretations ! They're allowed ! ps: i keep the dvd in my office !

Wonderful show. One of the only shows I can watch with my 6 year old son on network television. What more could a boy want, knights, sword fights, dragons and other monsters, castles...and some eye candy for the moms. Send the dads to Katie McGrath's episode of Tudors, they will want to come back to Merlin just for a refresher of her. As for those who don't like this version of Guinevere, you'll just have to get past the fact the show doesn't follow the Arthur legend to the tee. Each character seems to represent a part of the whole and she is the heart and innocence. But, you have to admit the show is original. Perhaps Americans can't handle originality any more. Please spare me more mindless reality shows and give the US Series 2 of Merlin and more family shows like it. Save the blood, guts, sex and profanity for cable....please and thank you.

My husband and I (who live in North Carolina) just LOVE this show. It started out slower but really got interesting. KEEP THE DRAGON, I think he's great! I was disappointed he wasn't used more in the stories. Here on the east coast most good series..and never on a Sunday...come on so late. This was an enjoyable show and brought at a decent time. KEEP IT ON!

I really enjoy the show and would love to see more of Morgana and Nimueh. I really feel they are very good actresses and need more screen time. I want to see the show continue because I think it is great! Cannot wait for season 2!

I LOVE it! It better stay a LONG, LONG time.

I didn't expect much from this show, especially hidden away on Sunday nights, but what a pleasant surprise. This show has only gotten better, the chemistry between the two stars is great, the plots and characters have continued to develop. This is a great show!

Absolute Bo&&ocks!!! To attach this load of twaddle to the Matter of Britain is a HUGE disservice to whatever the reality of 5th - 6th century Britannia was ... and even the mediaeval troubador's version. It's nothing more than a Monster of the Week show with some pretty dire acting. I only watched it cos there was nothing else on! Mind you, Robin Hood and Demon aren't any better!

very good review! agree 100 % and just would like to add that relationship/tension/chemistry/bromance between Merlin and Arthur keeped me addicted to this show! hope to see more of subtext slash in season 2!

...What, no mention of the equally subtexty relationship between the girls? They seemed to have shacked up by the finale! ;)

Merlin Series 1 was excellent. Ben Rawson-Jones( the writer of this article) got it so wrong unfortunately. The makers of Merlin got everything right so far and the above article do not represent the reality but only Ben's thoughts. Its too harsh and getting into details absolutely pointless. There is no homosexuality between Arthur and Merlin ( if that is 'politely' he is trying to say)but only promotes the power of true friendship, love and loyalty. Criticisms? hmmmmmmm.... so far only him gave such a harsh one. Nobody is perfect you , never forget that :)
Ivy, England on January 18th, 2009
I think that says it all. And this: "I certainly hope they keep up the Unresolved Sexual Tension between (colin and bradley) Merlin and Arthur for several seasons yet - and any brief unsuccessful romantic encounters can be nicely contrasted to their epic love/ common fate thing... :P The average member of the audience can pretend it's male bonding when they look soulfully into each others eyes and repeatedly face death for each other, while the rest of us can enjoy the fantastic slashiness :)" It's what caught my eye from the beginning. I love the show either way though.

Don't listen to people who want more morgana or less morgana or het romance or dragon or whatever. Don't be all Arthurian Smallville. Please! Above all: You really don't need a "Lana Lang".

I love this show. Although I'm not fond of Katie and Angel's acting, the Arthur/Merlin chemistry saves it. I've bought volume one and can't wait for series 2.
jen, in stoke on trent on December 31st, 2008
i agree with all comments except i think morgana is a terrible actress and spoilt the programme for me. less on screen time not more please.

i dont get it. why Gwen and Arthur should be together? hope it will not happen. simply there is no chemistry between James Bradley and Angel.

Must admit a gay twist in this series would be a GREAT twist!

i really really hope that Merlin and Arthur will get together in series 2. P.S. already bought Merlin volume 1 and LOVED IT!

Love the show. ha... i think it it could be nice and fun to have Merlin and Arthur together as a couple. but unfortunately it will not gonna happen... still im enjoying a lot their friendship
Chowned on December 30th, 2008
Must admit a gay twist would put me off the series as well. But I\'d prefer it over the Merlin writers playing green about the Arthur/Merlin relationship, then making a reveal at the 11th hour, in the show\'s last episode or some such. The heavy hinting without outright committing strikes me as the writers wanting to have their cake and eating it too. I\'m not a fan.
Ludmilla on December 30th, 2008
I hope they don't go with the gay relationship thing either. Bloke who plays Merlin is fugly. Not saying that all queer people have to be attractive, but imagining them Arthur and Merlin rolling around in bed together - not hot.
Tatiana Cardiff on December 28th, 2008
Only managed to see a couple of the episodes but the guy who plays merlin seems to be doing very well seen him performing in London. Wasn't keen on the female actors hop thy get better or the next series!
Naomi on December 28th, 2008
Mainly agree with the review. The plots were all reletivly similar at first. I hope that they don't go with the gay relationship thing - it would ruin the "intense friendship" theme and ruin chances of Arthur/Gwen or Arthur/Morgana.
J Peterson - Portsmouth. on December 27th, 2008
This new take on the Authrian Legend is really fun and refreshing. The relationship between Arthur and Merlin adds so much excitment and interest to the plot, and feels so much more relevent than dishing out the same old Arthur/Guinevere (Gwen) -but could actually explain it. As Gwen's eye was on Launcelot wasn't it? Tony Head as Uther brings his own acting brilliance, as does Richard Wilson as Gaius. Morgana and Nimueh are wonderfully wicked beautiful characters too. Yes for more of them, and yes yes yes for more Arthur/ Merlin. This is the sort of British quirky plot that creates something special.
Alex - Essex on December 27th, 2008
Merlin - Season 1 has been the best ever and I have always rated each episode 5 out of 5 because it is such a good show and it is good news for the fan it is returning next year again so more cool adventures for Merlin.
Bea, Birmingham on December 24th, 2008
After the trailers I started watching the show, then missed a couple of the mid-season episodes...then lost the will to continue watching it. It just wasn't worth catching up on, which made it not worth watching it to begin. Which makes me wonder....why is it worth leaving a comment about? hmmm....
Ludmilla on December 24th, 2008
Are they seriously going to make Arthur and Merlin gay in the new series, like Jack and Ianto in Torchwood?
Sarah, Reading on December 23rd, 2008
Really enjoy it, looking forward to the second series :0)
