We all absolutely love this show. It has everything family entertainment could want and it fills that early evening Doctor Who/Robin Hood void brilliantly.

Mackenzie Crook was definitely the highlight of the episode, being able to steal away all the scenes he was in! Can't believe Merlin and Arthur's friendship sort of ended for sometime there. It seems quite unusual for Arthur to put his trust in someone so shady and new like Cedric over Merlin, who had proven himself time and time again as a friend more than a servant. Good episode, but I think there are better ones yet to come!

I thought the first episode was great!! Lots of interesting dynamics and soooo many different ways to tread!! Can't wait for the rest of the series! xTx

The regression in A&M friendship was there so that Merlin would feel tempted at the end I guess. To be Arthur's slave with Arthur and everybody oblivious of his power or to "come out" and have everybody afraid of him. He'd have nothing to think about if he felt happy in his current position. Oh and Arthur taking his shirt off all the time is a nice character development :D

I found it difficult to deal with the fact that Arthur and Merlin's relationship took that much of a step back. They are supposed to progress. It seems that the plot took over the natural progression of the whole programme. On the other hand, I found it very witty and exciting! Go Merlin!

I have to agree. it was unpleasant seeing the friendship between Arthur and Merlin take a huge step back. It seems like this was a left over script from last season. It would be nice to see some continuity from the writers. I would have liked to see Crook as a recuring character. his performance was, as expected, was fun. He should have been this season's Michelle Ryan.

Arthur comes across more and more as a big kid with very few endearing qualities. I thought a relationship of trust had grown between him and Merlin by now. Yet suddenly we see him turning his back on his old friend in favour of someone that anyone with any sense would be instantly wary of. I'd already started to grow bored with the theme of 'the hero must save the day without anyone discovering he's a wizard'. Yet still it seems to be some sort of 'prime directive' in the story. I think it would be interesting if Arthur learned the truth about his servant, and how much he needs his help.

Merlin is portrayed too weak in the script. All that whinging. He's a powerful sorcerer, even with the king's restriction of not using magic he should/could be more forceful. Plus, nobody seemed to notice he "magically" appeared to save the day out of a locked dungeon? The script needs tinkering

somebody let the kids into the GCI toolbox. All that money spend on effects. Maybe some of it should have gone into the script.

story line was quite good but was slightly let down think it could have been a bit better not dying for next week... maybe a bit more bang :)

Iwas disappointed . The episode was clumsily used to re-start the story and had demolished the storylines that had developed last series. I hope this was just for the opening episode otherwise they will have ruined what last year, had turned out to be an all round quality production. They seemed to be trying to produce it to their idea of who the audience might be. I don't think longevity is achieved or high viewing figures amassed with a magical fairytale by producing it to pander, it has to have integrity in order for the fairy tale to be believed and therefore enjoyed. Last series Merlin had integrity and fairytale combined which was key to the special entertainment that combination achieved, which is how the Harry Potter experience specialised it's magic on it's the audience. This first episode of Merlin was a let down, I hope it was just for this first episode.

The boys are back in town! What a blistering start to Season 2. Fast paced, superb CGI and the wonderful McKenzie Crook...but for me, nothing beats the boys and their banter. Loved the fact that the whole of Camelot was in peril...and I couldn't leave my sofa to put the kettle on! The action was gritty, the love interest twinkling between Gwen and Arthur and it was simply bliss to relax into a bit of escapism. Role on Uther et al. Long Live the King! Final note has to go to Arthur "Merlin, have you been on the cider?" Thank you BBC 1 for sprinkling a little stardust on a Saturday night...

Is it me or is this programme a bit New Labour orientated. Uther 'Brown' Pendragon never listens to a soul and then when the fit hits the shan, he scurries around trying to fix a problem as though it was a complete suprise! As for posh boy Arthur, he behaves each and every week as though he doesn't know Merlin at all, it's as though they have only just met?? Uther Brown then says we must 'learn from our lessons of the past' remind you of anyone?

Merlin series 2 was great and so was series 1

I guess they have gone back a bit in terms of Merlin and Arthur's for people who hadn't seen the first series and to refresh our memories about the show. I will look forward to seeing the rest of the series to see how things develop. Apart from that I thought it was a beautifully filled and enjoyable first episode. Really loved the preview of the rest of the series too. Am v v excited. I LOVE MERLIN!

I had my ups and downs with this episode. I actually thought the relationship between Merlin and Auther advanced in this episode, because it showed that they still have a long way to go. It also brings the element of Merlin being scaried of telling Auther about his secret magic to the fore, and makes it more of a dilema because there is no telling which way Auther will go when he finds out. I was dissapointed a bit with the ending, because I thought it'd be great to ruin the established formula and have Merlin not save the day for once. However, the confusion that surrounded the ending (when it looked like it could go either way) was an interesting step forward, and hopefully there will be more moments in this series when the viewer does doubt wether or not Merlin has succeded. I think it would've been fantastic if Merlin had been possesed but then again it would also mean the Auther and everyone else in Camelot would've found out Merlin's secret. So overall I think it was a decent opening episode, but a bit flawed and yeah a tiny bit stale. I think to get to a third season the writers will have to start moving more away from the formula that was series one. I really hope that they do mix things up because this show has amazing potential!

A great start to Series 2. It was great to see Merlin again , specially with The Dragon after a frosty end at the end of Series 1. I Specially liked the story involving a old legend in Camelot , Cornelius Sigan saying that he will return and wreck havoc in the form of Mackenzie Crook who played Cedric in the episode. Brilliant way of introducing Cornelius and his stone Phonix like birds. I specially liked How Giaus was saved by Merlin when he entered the earier room of where Cornelius Sigan soul was in a Blue stone on top of a stone status of Cornelius and stepped on a trap and a arrow fired from a mouth of one of the stone birds and Merlin managed to deflect the arrow in a slow motion scene which is always great , specially on Merlin as it seems to always work well. Really can't wait for Episode 2 if this is how Series 2 is gong to be like.

I LOVE this show and I think that it was a pretty good start to the new series. Mackenzie Crook is awesome so even though the format of the story is getting a little bit old, it was still enjoyable with him there. I disagree with what other people are saying about the Arthur/Merlin friendship, I think they had to make clear that they aren't always best friends for the people who possibly haven't seen the first series. Bring on the next episode please! :)
Jamie Poole on September 20th, 2009
To be fair it was only the first episode and it was designed to make it look like nothing had changed because merlin himself says it, all the cast have said they will develop Morgana won't be having nightmares like that every episode I think ep3 or 4 will be when her powers really start showing GREAT START !!!!!!!
Sam,London on September 20th, 2009
You have to remember that merlin is just a manservant to Arthur and of course Arthur is Prince. Arthur can't be seen being all pally with a servant and he has more worrying things to deal with protecting the kingdom and all. I thought it was a very good epsoide and loads better than Robin hood. Plus did you see how many times arthur had his shirt off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dee, Herts on September 20th, 2009
It's great to see Merlin back, a Sat night choice away from boring reality/talent shows. But I feel like the 1st series, it will take a while to get going.

I was resonably impressed but I agree alot with the review; series 1 got very good last year with more Morgana, less of the stale formular about 3/4 of the way through the series but most importantly the bond Arthur and Merlin had come to share. I agree... it felt like all that had been cast aside. Obviously the plot depended on Arthur not trusting Merlin, but if its at the cost of charactor development should it have been kept in at all? I did expect more following the promise of the end of last series. In fact, it was almost like it had gone back in time to the middle of series 1. Thank god for the scene with the dragon; it added some nice continunity and it seems they have taken DS advice on giving it something to actually do. It was not all bad. Macenzie Crook was good and all the cast are brilliant. The series looks like its going to be very good. And I did enjoy the story with the sorcerer. I do think Merlin is best when it takes on darker and gritty tales and the last few mins really showed why. Roll on series 2!

I say it was the best episode of the entire show!

I loved it and I think it is great Saturday night entertainment from the BBC. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Sally, Epsom on September 20th, 2009
It seemed to me no progression had been made and when Morgana woke up from yet another tedious nightmare I began to lose a bit of interest in it. Is she going to wake up screaming for Gwen in every episode? And why would Arthur dump Merlin so quickly? Didn't make sense to me. Great special effects but I hope (like the reviewer) series 2 doesn't stick to the same forumula as series 1. Things need to progress.
Sophie, Essex on September 20th, 2009
I think it was a very good episode to start off the new series. The acting was brilliant, the costumes have been improved and the CGI was amazing compared to last year. The flying monkeys were wonderflly made up and the baddie of the week, while being a typical baddie, was still very good... and no doubt we'll be hearing more about Camelot's ancient sorcerers. The bigger budget they had this year served them well. Everything was good and it was very enjoyable for the whole family to watch. I literally have no complaints about it. Other family dramas get away with showing TERRIBLE series openers - something which Doctor Who does frequently. I was suprised at how well Merlin pulled off the first episode. Congrats Merlin on welcoming us back so brilliantly! :D

Yes, all of the development in Series One has been forgotten. Almost a total reset. Ridiculous.

I thought the last one was great. Not something I've have chosen to get into, but my son got me into it, so I'll be tuned in for this one.

i think merlins return was really good as it still had the same funny moments as the previous series but it seems a lot darker and the story lines deeper than the previous series . altogether i think it was the best episode yet .
Sose, Australia on September 20th, 2009
I was so happy to see Mackenzie Crook in this role! I thought he was excellent. I thought the episode itself was a good way to reintroduce everyone to the context and to the characters. I also love how the Gwen/Arthur part of the legend is beginning to be built on, the trailer for the next episodes make it seem like it's definitely not going to go unnoticed, which I think is great. However, I'm not sure about Lancelot returning...I guess with a series like this, you know where the characters are going to end up; but wasn't expecting Lancelot to show up for a long long time yet. I think it's gorgeous how Arthur's slowly becoming more smitten with her and beginning to act how he would if/when he is king. Roll on Season 2!
Paul, Manchester on September 20th, 2009
It was the usual Merlin fare. It reminds me very much of the X-Files where all the action took place in darkened rooms with flashlights and Sculley never saw a thing. With Merlin whenever he uses his powers people are either looking the other way or are all unconscious. How many times is that now? Every time. Except when witches or warlocks are sharing screen time and since they usually expire within a single episode they do not matter. Do you see how they totally avoided explaining how the attack on Camelot was averted? How everyone in the castle sort of said, "look, the sun is shining, what's for dinner?" I do want to like Merlin but until he 'comes out' as it were, it is just irritating.
David Staples, Sheffield on September 20th, 2009
Merlin is doomed to go the same way as "Robin Hood". Too expensive, with not enough viewers to keep it going beyond this series.
Daniel Erskine on September 20th, 2009
To put this show into one word is easy: Fantastic. While this episode may have stuck to a familiar formula, you cant deny it was a great story with some great acting and special effects to start this current series with a bang! The future episodes look incredible and I will say it this show is one of the best british dramas ever made and so, so, so, so, so much better than Doctor Who.
