An excellent episode but not my favourite

No, you're dead wrong here Ben. This was an excellent episode. It was genuinely creepy and claustrophobic, and it showed that most of the human characters were ambiguous and difficult to predict in their responses to the end. Sometimes they were perceptive; sometimes not. So the hostess finally working out what was going on was entirely of a piece with the rest of the story. Seems like maybe you were too ready to ignore her along with the rest of the passengers... Good to see the Doctor *not* be in full control for once: too often these days he appears as a quasi-deity. And as for those who found it boring: sci-fi should *not* always be reliant on explosions. Concentrate harder!

My god that episode was so BORING! The acting was good but every one was talking all the time and it was really irritating. The whole episode got on my nerves!

This episode was spot on! The Doctor in this episode was scaired! and its nice to see, over 900 years old and he doesnt have the "I KNOW IT ALL ATTITUDE" He tried to sympathise and understand the creature, and he got knifed in the back in turn. The whole point of this episode was to show how a normal person will behave in a crisis situation, the father, wife, son, professor all behaved drastically to resolve the situation. It was only an assistant called "Dee Dee" and a "stuardess" who's name we will never know, who smart enough, and human enough, to work out what was going on! and hail to them both, the two under apperciated humans worked it out, and not give into mob mentality! As for the creature possesing Sky, creepy is an understatment! less is more when it comes to this creature! what we don't know scaires us more! and this creaure was ticking all the creapy boxes.

...and some Troughtons in the episode too I see...both on the acting and production side.

Utterly terrific! Tense and shocking, this is RTD's best episode. David Tennant shows off his talents, but the real winner is Lesley Sharp, her performance turns this episode from a potentially boring one into a thrilling one. Brilliant!

This episode was rubbish. The worst one since Dr Who has been brought back in 2005. The first 10 minutes were promising and quite nice but Sky just got annoying. David Tennant played the scared Doctor superbly and had no one to stick up for him which was another bad point. If they had Donna with him, she could've stuck up for him and I think that they could've made the episode very powerful showing her friendship with the Doctor. It would also have repayed the Doctor for his help in her life. I was very disappointed with this episode and thought that at this stage in the show, it should've been much higher standard. This time last year we were watching the fantastic 'Blink' so I expected something at least 3 times as good as Midnight.

I don't agree with your review at all! This episode was fantastic, David Tennant was amazing and played new depths we haven't saw in the doctor. Also the entire ensemble cast carried this episode into one of the best from this season if not the entire series. The trailer's for midnight didnt leave me in much anticipation for this episode but i found myself enthralled while watching it, the force possessing sky and the doctor probably scared me more repeating everything than an army full of daleks or cybermen. It was different to see the doctor vunerable and defenceless when all the passengers turned on him and no companion to back him up. The conclusion of the episode when the stewardess realised the thing in sky had taken the doctor's voice shocked me - i didnt expect it although after watching the episode again it wasn't a contrived way of wrapping up the story throughout the episode she was the authority figure, but was the first to come up with throwing the creature inside sky out into midnight! and when the creature said allons-y she knew for sure cause the doctor said it to her at the very beginning! great job RTD!

Why does everyone who dislikes the episode have to rate it as 1? Is there no other bad rating? IMO it was a fantastic episode, and as a counter checklist you could say that the references are there for fun (and dont seem to interfere with the story) saying a character is a lesbian is in no way a 'pointless revelation, simply a fact about the character, (get over it) and finally, Deus ex Machina ending? With an established exit and character who would kill Sky? I will miss you RTD

I thought midnight was a really good episode but i can't wait until the next. ROSE IS RETURNING !!!!!!!!!!!!
Louis, Bournemouth on June 17th, 2008
A very stripped down episode yet very powerful at the same time and it doesn't round things off at the end, it leaves the mystery which increases the fear factor. 3 stars? Are you sure you are fit to review Doctor Who?
Ben, London on June 17th, 2008
Its unbelievable that this could be considered frightening as it was merely repetition throughout with an ending that explained nothing. There is always one poor episode per season though.
James, Manchester on June 17th, 2008
If anyone says this was a bad episode they need help. It was just amazing!!! I have never seen The Doctor that scared before. Whats more scary than being thrown out of a window??
Stu, Brighton on June 17th, 2008
I loved this episode and, quite frankly, I thought it was one of RTD's best episodes to date. I enjoyed it more than the Steven Moffat 2 parter... But I was really looking forward to Steven Moffat's episodes and then found them to be quite lacking. However, based on the trailer, I wasn't looking forward to "Midnight" at all. So it was a lovely surprise. I do agree with what others have said about the Stewardess and the ropey SFX cityscape. But all in all, it was a great episode. Probably my favourite of Season 4 so far, but still not as good as Blink!

Lily, Oxford on June 17th, 2008
I LOVED it. After the Moffat two-parter was so great I was dreading this episode but it had me gripped from the beginning. A fascinating look into how people cope in panicking situations. I didnt find the ending forced - all the way through she was wanting to get rid of the threat to her passengers, when she realized that was Sky she got rid of her. And with no companion to save him I was genuinely concerned for the Doctor as they turned on him!
Rich, Wolverhampton on June 17th, 2008
Again it was another great eppisode, definatley the scariest episode since 'Blink'. It just goes to show that you don't need big budgets and special effects to make great entertainment. Well done RTD
WR, London on June 17th, 2008
Brilliant. RTD showed Moffat how to write scary and edge-of-the-seat stuff, AND how to develop secondary characters. He achieved far more in 40 minutes than Moffat did in twice the time. I was gripped throughout, whereas I found Moffat's much-hyped episodes boring and unconvincing. I fear for the series with Moffat at the helm.
Zucc, Bournemouth on June 17th, 2008
Another one dimensional episode from the pen of RTD. Needless pop-culture references - check. Pointless revelation of character's sexuality - check. Deus ex Machina ending - check. Bye Russell, wish I could say I'd miss you....
Michael - London on June 16th, 2008
Just one of the finest episodes I have seen, great acting and I was genuinly concerned for the Doctors safety. Really looking forward to the last few episodes.
Kirsty Harris on June 16th, 2008
My favorite story since the series began, and I found the conclusion to be entirely satisfactory as well...a very powerful story that explorers the human psyche and the power of the group mentality in a stressful situation in a highly commendable manner. The acting from Tennant and Sharp was also top draw. Five stars without a doubt!
Chris, Devon on June 16th, 2008
Yet another brilliant episode - shame it isn't RTD's last, because then he could really boast about going out in style. Vastly and uniquely different, confined and claustrophobic yet without a low-budget feeling to it. David Tennant and Lesley Sharp - need I gush? The imagination that goes into it as well... and some of the best characterisations in New Who. It's refreshing to know that RTD's Who is ready to stretch it wings from format and give us such gems every series. I agree the denouement was quite sudden and forced, yet surely this did not detract so much as to give it 3 stars?

Martin, Cornwall on June 16th, 2008
An obvious filler episode and poor quality as well. Bad acting from most of the support cast (with the exception of Lesley Sharp and the kid who played Jethro) just made it annoying in the extreme.
David, Leicester on June 16th, 2008
This is what great Si-Fi is all about, not special effects but playing to ones imagination. This episode did all that and more the best 45 minutes that I have seen in a long time. Keep up the great work!
Monica on June 16th, 2008
Boring........Boring.....BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just cannot believe how BORING it was. Yes, there were a few good moments, but overall, B-O-R-I-N-G-!
Lee, York on June 16th, 2008
This was an excellent episode. Anyone who says otherwise just proves you have no taste whatsoever!!!
Brendan Weybridge on June 16th, 2008
Russell T Davies is such an annoying writer. His scripts are always too flip and arch and his thumbnail characters are totally underwritten. His constant and unfunny "dig in the ribs" allusions to contemporary Britain jar. The repetition thing on Saturday just became annoying rather than terrifying. Also, NOT that it was a SFX based episode, but if you're going to show a cityscape do it right! Really naff, like Blue Peter had made it.

A thing i see regualrly with reviewers.. they miss the point of some things that seem obvious to me. The ending was purposely open ended, cant you see that, the whole Donna asking the Dr what he thought it was, was also asking the audience what they thought it was. As for the stewardess, i thought it was greatly underplayed. Throughout the episode she was the one who would do anything for her passengers. She was the one who spoke up first when the notion of killing the woman to save the group came up, and at the end, she took a bullet for the passengers that really didnt treat her very well. And this serves perfectly as a metaphor for the way that we the public treat service staff. I can imagine that Russell T Davies got the idea for this episode whilst sitting on a plane watching a steward or stewardess getting abused.

Vijay Patel on June 15th, 2008
This is another example of why Russell T Davies doesn't know how to write science fiction. After the glorious 2 parter from Steven Moffat this was dull, lifeless and had me drifting into zzzzzzzzzz........ Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish and I've been a Doctor Who fan for over 30 years. Bring on Steven Moffat.
Lucy London on June 15th, 2008
It was very good, especially how quickly nice people turned into murderers! I think the creature could have been made abit more scary, maybe something in the shadows, before possesing the woman. The woman with the glasses should have been the one who defeated the creature, as she understood the doctor was trapped the whole time.
David, London on June 15th, 2008
For me it wasn't the best episode. There was far too much screaming & arguing and the story really never reached its full potential. So much more could've been done with the situation, characters, etc. to give it more suspense and much more fear. Instead, it just ended up being one long episode of characters shouting over one another. It was as if RTD had run out of ideas for the episode and so decided to extend it by adding in a lot dialogue! I gave it a two only because we saw Rose, otherwise - sadly - it would've been a one.
Daniel, UK on June 15th, 2008
Great episode - a lot better than the last two! Annoying though, that we did not find out what this 'monster' was.
Carmella, Ireland on June 15th, 2008
I rarely watch this show but enjoyed this episode David Tennant is brilliant and also liked the supporting actors!
Les Ferris on June 15th, 2008
Best episode of Dr. Who in a long time. It showed the other side of humanity to what we normally get on this show. Much more adult than the other episodes.
Jack, Bristol on June 15th, 2008
Brillant episode. The best of this series.
Anne, Herts on June 15th, 2008
Disagree on your take of the ending, Ben; ever watch how people treat air cabin crew (as marginals) and then rely on them when the proverbial hits the fan? The hostess was consistent throughout the script in trying to ensure the safety of her passengers, she followed through when it became necessary: nothing contrived about that. Loved the episode, good to see the Doctor vulnerable sans companion to bat for him, hoist on the petard of his sometimes pompous comments! Creepy and thought-provoking and wonderfully acted throughout.
Deborah, Algarve (Portugal) on June 15th, 2008
worst. episode. ever. Sorry it wasn't at all good, just dull and boring. And I LOVE Dr Who.
Tim, London on June 15th, 2008
A proper adult episode, excellent. I actually thought that The Doctor was going to be chucked out. It was good to see him become helpless. You just cant trust humans!!!
Ryan, Belfast on June 15th, 2008
An excellent eipsode I felt. It's sometimes a frustration to know what's coming (thank you 'rest of season' trailer) and have to sit through an episode bearing almost no relation to a wider arc, but this was a suberb self-contained thrill, with a very deep message as to our own fears of what we don't understand, xenophobia, and old and young across a national divide struggling to have their voices heard in a world becoming more and more heavily consumed with paranoid panic. Well done I say, made me think. Then I just plain kacked me pants at the preview of next weeks DW!

Graham C, Oxford on June 15th, 2008
I have to disagree with DigitalSpy. "Midnight" was one of the very best, if not THE best, episode of Dr Who since it returned in 2005. Superbly written, brilliantly acted - Russell T Davies and David Tennant showed just why the industry holds them in such high regard. I would be surprised if any other Dr Who episodes this year (yes, even with Rose and the big D returning) can match this.
