I thought it was very exiting and waters of mars is going to be even better. I know what the woman means in Planet of the Dead 'he will knock four times' Here come the drums! im quite sad that tennant regenerates this year it will be verymotional Tennant will always be the best doctor in history!
Greg Long, Missouri on October 24th, 2009
It stunk. Tennant was wonderful and the special effects were top notch but it wasn't enough. The silliness was bad enough but Lady Christina was intolerable. Never before has the series seen a smug, hateable Mary Sue and I spent the whole episode praying that that Doctor would throw her to the flying fish. She doesn't even contribute anything to the plot - she only exists for everyone to be terribly impressed by how wonderful she is.

I <3 it!!!

The four knocks associated withe Master sound surprisingly similar to the four beats in the Doctor Who openning theme.

I have been a fan of doctor who since i was a kid back in the eighties, and love the new stories, i think RTDs dialogue and characters are great.. but in his episodes i always find the storylines to be lame or rushed( with the exception of midnight and gridlock). and i feel this ruins potentially great stories... planet of the dead is only beaten in awfulness by partners in crime.. roll on moffat and his excellent storytelling ability

I found it fine for easter only was angered by Dr who refusing to travel with Lady Christina , she was the bright spark in it , lee evans was good but I felt he was doing a stand up routine ax

I just think it's brilliant (and breathtaking) that people are saying Doctor Who ripped of Primeval. People really ought to learn a bit of 'history' so to speak...This episode was average at best. Which is still about 10 times better than the lame, godawful (and now thankfully axed) Primeval..

Agreed, as much as I look forward to every Doctor Who episode, this one was really weak.

Having watched PLANET OF THE DEAD right proper (Online just doesn't seem the same), I have to say that whilst I don't completely disagree with Mr. Rawson-Jones' review. It was lightweight adventure, to be sure, but not nearly as horrendous as the reviewer would have you believe. I enjoyed the repartee/banter between the two leads, and would have welcomed Michelle Ryan as a regular - if circumstances would have allowed. David Tennnant goes from strength to strength and will be sorely missed when he exits the TARDIS this Christmas...a vast improvement over THE NEXT DOCTOR, and a story that has me eagerly anticipating THE WATERS OF MARS

Gotta admit, the plot came at an unfortunate time, with the third series of Primeval underway when it aired I couldn't help thinking the plot was just a little too similar to the ITV show. Bus goes through wormhole in tunnel in modern day London and comes out in futuristic alien world? Yep, that could be Primeval. I half expected Douglas Henshall and Hannah Sperrit to turn up at anytime. Primeval comparisons aside I don't think the episode was as bad as the review says. Okay, it didn't stand up to previous Doctor Who classics like "Doomsday" or "Voyage of the Damned" but to be honest, it was right slap bang in the middle of a Doctor Who void. The hype around "Journey's End" was long forgotten and it was far too early to look forward to David Tennant's epic (well it better be) finale, so this episode is sort of like a nice bridge between the series 4 aftermath and the storm that is to hit our screens at Christmas, it's a simple, stand alone plot which reminds us that Doctor Who is still in top form without being too mind boggling. After the slightly over-complicated "The Next Doctor" the simple story was a bit of light relief, that could just be enjoyed casually without having to think too much. Ok, so it move a little slow. We where all waiting for something to pop out of the sand, and the wait dragged horribly, only to find our reward as two very badly designed aliens with cliched ray guns, and some totally uninteresting sting rays that where "just behaving naturally" or whatever. An hour-long episode does need an evil villain at it's head who we can cheer at the death of, and the lack of one made the whole thing seem as dry and the desert it was filmed in. The disappointing ending was saved by "He will knock four times" (a lot of fans have probably worked out who this is, but I won't ruin it here in case you haven't) which assured us that the simple episode formula was not here to stay, and made the whole episode seem like just a breath of fresh air before being plunged back into the furnace, and thankfully that one line saved the entire episode from being forgotten. After "Voyage of the Damned" which had a completely new team of characters behind the Doctor who where all well characterized, the bus passengers where disappointing, with only Carmen being vaguely memorable because of her final lines. Everyone else was forgotten about instantly when the credits rolled. They where hardly characterized and the story would have been no different if the bus had been empty save The Doctor, Christina, the driver and Carmen, the others just seemed to be making a crowd. Ryan and Evans made spectacular supporting characters, and it's just a shame Christina was not built upon more as she had great potential. Overall though, this episode was a nice break from the usual "end of the world" nature of the other specials, and allowed us to re-enter the Doctor Who world without having to drop our Easter Eggs over it. It's just a shame it's going to be November before we can do so again, and any suspense caused by this installment is going to wear off fast. Good while it lasted however.

A good, fun episode. Ryan was wonderful as Christina, someone who could well have been the best companion since... well... a long time, if she'd stayed with the Doctor, and that Welsh scientist... delightful. It's true the story was slow, but the witty script (no-one seems to be mentioning some of the great lines - are people not picking them?) kept things moving along.

I thought the special wasn't anything special, but still it was entertaining. I am a Doctor Who fan, and I don't mind Torchwood, but I think Primeval is awful, I have watched a couple of episodes before anyone says that I judge it by its advertising...
Luke Wibberley Derby on May 2nd, 2009
I love Primeval so much, but hate Doctor Who. I haven't seen the special properly but from the highlights I saw it was bloody rubbish, as usual. Having an anomaly leading to another world was a complete rip off from Primeval. Doctor Who Planet of the Dead was awful, crapper than usual. Primeval all the way!

how very dare you !!!!!!! that review is seriously wrong if u bothered to pay attention to the show you would realise that it is unique adventurous although michelkle ryan is not the best choice she adds a change of scenery to the show. what u should be saying is how dissapointed u r that David Tennant (best doctor by far) is leaving and is being replaced by a young unexperianced floppy haired guy who acn never have the falir, talent, humour, confidence, coolness, or gorgeousness that he has ! A well deserved 5 stars from a TRUE doctor who fan !!!!
Steve, NJ-USA on April 27th, 2009
I was NOT disappointed! Okay, so it wasn't Christmas aboard the Titanic with Kylie Monogue, but the story was original, the characters unique. Can anyone of you write better without copying from prior episodes? I just don't know what I'm going to do without David Tennant running the TARDIS!

I LOVED it thought it was a great simple good old fashioned adventure, and being Michelle Ryan back or even better bring Catherine Tate back!
Kirsty, Cyprus on April 19th, 2009
A bit of a let down to be honest but not quite as bad as the Christmas Special. I Didn't think much of Michelle Ryan, she was a bit too forced and wooden for me. Not up to the usual standard of companions. However, David Tennant was his usual brilliant self. I think the series always works better but I am not looking forward to losing DT as the Doctor! I am interested to see how Matt Smith will approach the character and can't wait for Steven Moffat to take over as lead writer!
Mort Lincoln on April 19th, 2009
What a shame! The first of Tennant's last four stories and it hardly set the stage for him to leave in a blaze of glory. More of a struggling match in the wind... I just hope the next 3 give the tenth Doctor the send off he deserves

Russel T Davis has given up on the Doc! What a disappointment. Michelle Ryan, great actress, but badly misused
Catulina - Cheshire on April 17th, 2009
I thought this episode was not quite upto scratch. The story line was not strong and there was no real tension. Any there was was broken by Lee Evans's pathetic over-acting. I thought he was dreadful; his accent unauthentic! How can an episode written by 2 Welshmen.. who presumably had some input into it's production/direction, allow such a pathetic stereotype. If I want a flying bus I think I'll stick to Harry Potter.
Colin - Croydon on April 17th, 2009
It was nice and light. Michelle Ryan was funny and would make a great companion. Nice to see a companion who's being bright and smart.

I think Dr Who works best as a series but this was better than Xmas!

David, London on April 17th, 2009
It’s a mark of how high expectations are of Doctor Who these days that this special was a disappointment. It all felt a bit Doctor-by-numbers; all the usual elements were present but with no strong narrative to string it all together. Having deposited the bus in the desert there seemed little reason story-wise to go to all the expense, lovely though it looked! A lot of the acting (with the possible and surprising exception of Lee Evans who I usually can’t stand) seemed a bit below par, leading me to suspect that the production suffered from a particular lack of that rare commodity in TV drama, time. Which was a shame, because not being buried in a whole season this Easter one-off was left looking a bit below par. Every long running series inevitably has an off-day but as someone hinted earlier, if you think this was bad dig out ‘Timelash’ to see how ropey a resource-starved Doctor Who can get! RTD assures us that the tenth Doctor’s exit will not disappoint. I’m looking forward to finding out!

i am a huge dr who fan, this was dreadfull and cringeworthy, not RTD `s normall brilliantly written episodes. i found the who episode a waste of time, ive been collecting dr who dvd`s for a while now, when this is released this is not one for my collection.

I loved it! Ryan was well cast, contrary to what everyone is saying, although I too disliked her kissing the Doctor. Stop the romances already. Why was Donna everyone's favourite companion - she was the only one who didn't fall in love with the Doctor! Well, she was also the funniest to watch and she had some other qualities ;) And why did everyone love Lee Ewans, I found his moments a little boring. So I give the episode a 4, because all in all it was still Doctor Whovishly great, but the kisses and the mad scientist pulled it back.

DanVine, Hertfordshire on April 16th, 2009
I really enjoyed this episode. It was a good laugh and pretty exciting. Doctor Who's dark side is very good but what I love about the show is it combines a lot of fun stuff with the darker stuff, also the dark stuff has impact when compared to this sort of thing. Lady Christina the character and Michelle Ryan the actress were both great (would like her to come back as a regular companion in the future) also Malcolm was a brilliant character and well played by Lee Evans. To answer someone elses comments "Why did they film in dubai?" well I'm no expert but how many deserts are there in south wales! "RTD cant write sci-fi" who was it who bought Doctor Who back from the dead again? "hour specials dont work it has to be done over a series and continued story archs" Characters can be developed in one episode, also this is only the 1st of the specials. how much development has been done in any one of the series openers so far...?

Just awful. I'm a new fan to Dr Who. I've watched all the series and bought the DVD's of the series past. Ed in Oxford is correct,100%. When you look back at the series in the past it's had some stunning stories. The Philip Hinchcliffe years prove that Dr Who can be fun, have a great story and excellent creatures to boot. I love The talons of Weng Chiang,Brain of Morbius,Deadly Assassin and the Seeds of Doom. Russell T Davies has lost the plot altogether. Not much original thinking on any level. Dr Who in the sixties and seventies had more BALLS than Planet of the Dead and Voyage of the Damned in terms of story development and good solid Characterization than this rubbish. I feel very let down. I hope that we won't have the same problem with the next special.

Gaby from Liverpool on April 16th, 2009
Ok, so Lady Christina was an irritating addition to this and considering the ad campaign made it reminiscent of Stephen King's Langoliers, I thought the whole episode was more Harry Potter with bad effects. To be honest, I'm just glad things got dark towards the end of the episode, with the ringing of the cloister bell and the ominous 'knocker', I can't wait for the next installment and hopefully a trip back to the darker Who we all love.
OberonUK, Salford on April 16th, 2009
It wasn't the 'romp' we were promised and the jokes were pretty flimsy. Didn't feel any real connection between the Dr and Christina either. It felt like a standard episode padded out to an hour. Would have been fine as a normal episode, but was a wasted opportunity for an extended 'special'.

I dont agree with the reviewer, found the entire episode to be an absolute joy. Lee Evans was definately the highlight though.

A vast improvement over the usual one hour holiday specials or 'dross', as I prefer to call them. Didn't particularly like Lady Christina but she was bearable for one episode. But please, please, please can we have an episode or (preferably) series where somebody doesn't try to snog the Doctor?!
