I should really give it a 5 ***** Why when it was s**t? No mention of Rose Piper. Hurrrahh!

This was brilliant from start to finish. 9 million viewers, stomped primdrivel into the ground. Dr who just surpasses itself with every single episode. Anyome who didn't like it has no taste whatsoever. For all the moaning and whinging of the sad minority, the majority loved it.

Review is spot on: this was woeful. The plot is thin, Ryan is miscast, and the monsters utterly lacked menace. Compare this to Tom Baker classics like "The Pyramids of Mars" or "City of Death": they had no money to spend, but it was a million times better. Total crap.

I didnt see any difference between this and a standard peice of RTD-era Who joy and I found it a refreshing example of teamwork and "nature vs nature"...no antagonist, just a journey, a mission, and a destination, wonderfully executed. I'd rather have more innovative, fresh and uplifting specials in the vien of this story than any of that. THIS is what DW is all about. These days, it is far too easier to criticise and look for reasons to be negative than to enjoy something designed as escapism. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Go back to watching Britain's Got Talent, it's clearly the only intellectually stimulating thing some of you are capable of processing.

I thought it was a fun episode, entertaining which is what tv is supposed to be although from most comments here tv appears to be for punishing yourself by watching stuff you don't like. I love all the examples of how Davies writing is, was terrible and how you undiscovered scripting wonders would have improved things. Back things up if your going to slate things don't just say this is crap or he's crap explain. If I said I could fly ok pretty sure i'd be expected to explain how.
Bert, Wiltshire on April 14th, 2009
It was a hell of a lot better than Christmas.
Chatterbox, Hampshire on April 14th, 2009
Ok, it was Dr Who lite but the review is way too harsh.. I think the pacing was a bit off, and that might have something to do with the filming problems and rewrites. I agree that the obligatory snog has got irritating though - time to move on from that however gorgeous the man may be.
Tim, London on April 14th, 2009
Insipid crap. And can someone explain to me why they went all the way to Dubai to film?? Not exactly the gay friendliest place, eh, RTD?? Someone was getting a backhander there, methinks!
Sarah, Cambs on April 14th, 2009
People need to lighten up. Your expectations are far too high! It was a fun romp. Michelle Ryan was a bit over the top, but she only had one episode to make an impression. it was just a bit of easter fun for the family. If you want some gritty scifi watch Battlestar Galactica or DS9. Chill out!

For once I was glad to see quite a light episode. Not too airy-fairy, but not depressing. Fantastic casting of Lee Evans (he's my new favourite miscellaneous character), lots of lovely semi-realistic technobabble, great one-liners. I did start to like Christina towards the end but I did spend a lot of the time wishing she would just use her normal voice. The pinnacle of my annoyance was when she went to retrieve that clamp and it was so similar to Lara Croft I could have screamed. Very nice story, though, some great ideas. DT being his quirky best as usual. You really felt his side of the equation let's say but I didn't really believe in her light flirting. And "four knocks". They might at well have have said "[blank] is returning". Such an obvious clue. Come on people! Four. Knocks. Series. Three. Think about it! Oooh, lovely, my favourite villain to come. Sadly he's going to get my favourite Doctor. Nooo.

My initial thoughts were that it was a bit of a disappointment. Loved the desert landscapes, looked fanastic and on a movie scale, but the story was very slow and not much happened. And the FX looked really shoddy I thought compared to the last couple of seasons. And those fly men looked well dodgy, like something out of a B Movie! Considering it is one of only four specials we are getting this year, i just felt disappointed, However, the woman's predictions at the end were a nice touch. Obviously the Master (with the four knocks, the drumming!!) so nothing really intriguing there. The Waters of Mars looks fantastic, and the last 2 eps are promising to be very good. Its nice that bernard cribbons is going be the companion in the final 2 parter.

Kate, Reading on April 14th, 2009
Agree with this review - what a disappointment. Michelle Ryan, as the companion, was a major stumbling block, impossible to like or identify with, no depth of character at all. The Doctor has now morphed into Superman (music hinted at this when the bus re-emerged?). And the now obligatory snog was just embarassing. By the third time we saw the extremely slowly moving oncoming storm I was willing it to arrive and eat someone just to alleviate the boredom. Every so often RTD just goes too far, lots of bang, crash and no substance and this was one of those occasions.

Perhaps if this had been part of a regular series, it would have passed without too much comment. As it is, I think fans are getting serious Dr Who withdrawal symptoms this year and we're well aware how little time we have left with David. So we want every second we have of his reign to be brilliant and, sadly, this fell short. Personally, I didn't think it was bad but it had plot holes like Swiss cheese. The Tritovore were a seriously wasted opportunity and so much else just wasn't as tense or funny as it had potential to be. I really didn't like the twist at the end where he let Christina escape, he should have left her to take the consequences of her theft but then asked UNIT to put in a good word for her at the trial. I'll accept it for what it was though, a bit of family fluff for a bank holiday weekend.

Mark, UK on April 14th, 2009
Poor episode, not helped by Ryan's dreadful acting (obviously no one on the production team saw the remake of The Bionic Woman before casting her) and the pacing was just so dull - plus you didn't really care if anyone got eaten by the Swarm at the end either (I bet RTD nabbed that idea from the IDW comic studios when he was visiting recently too - that's straight out of their Transformers comic series). Plus that whole flying bus thing...definitely one of the worst offerings from New Who to date.
Emma, Warrington on April 14th, 2009
I fell asleep. It was a dire rip-off of Pitch Black and I too am sick of all the romance. Blah. I can't wait for Moffat to take the reins and write some women (like Sally Sparrow) who don't just fall at the Doctor's feet - I just wish Mr Ten-Inch was staying.
Daniel Ward, Polesworth on April 14th, 2009
I just wanted to point out, the Master... his little 4 knock rythme thing... dont you think that could be the 2 knocks the old woman is on about?

Graham,Bradford on April 14th, 2009
Another very poor effort I'm afraid. You would think that since these are Russel T Davies and David Tennant's final few episodes they would pull out all the stops instead we get this boring tripe.Everything about this episode was poor,The story (sucked through a wormhole on a double decker bus!),The acting from most of the cast, The effects(stupid looking fly men in boiler suits, cartoon looking flying sting rays, cartoon looking flying London bus aaarrrrggg!!) This c*ap would bore the pants off a 4 year old. Please can we get back to some decent story's with maybe just a bit of menace, story's with the fear factor raised above 0 would be lovely. It's time to get back to basics,Dr Who was never about hero worship(UNIT generals saluting him over the phone, nutty professor confessing his love for him)and since when,in classic Who did the Doctor have to snog all his companions? that was Captain Kirk's job.I know Dr Who is a family show,it always was,but please give us some credit.

Darren on April 14th, 2009
RTD cant write Sci-Fi and that episode was utter dross, Im asking for a TVL refund.
Boldy Brummie on April 14th, 2009
Anyone ever seen the movie Pitch Black, nick the script rewrite it very badly and you have "Planet of the Dead"
John, London on April 14th, 2009
A life-long fan, I too was disappointed with this. My main feeling was "been there, done that, got the teeshirt": the whole thing felt like a tired retread of previous stories, hurriedly put together. Didn't RTD have to rewrite the script when the bus got damaged on the way to Dubai? It showed. MR was totally underwhelming, and the kiss at the end was awful. The bus passengers were annoying and "your song is ending" repeated Planet of the Ood's line - not even needed. Bring on the Moff!!
Ian Gettings, York on April 14th, 2009
watched it with some mates, some not fans and we all loved it - one guy's wife who never watches it was impressed and said a few times how good it was. I think we have been a bit spoilt recently and forget how far this stands out against other programmes.

Nelson Cardiff on April 14th, 2009
The first problem is always going to be the 'hour specials'. They are inherently flawed as has been proven since the first Xmas episode (that itself being the one possible exception). Only in the 'series' format does Dr Who really work, story arcs, character development for example. Too much emphasis is placed on action in the specials. Tennant is reduced to a headless idiot and his chicken companion running around like... a headless idiot and his chicken companion. The second problem is the announcement of Tennant's departure. Although difficult and near impossible this was an ill-advised approach and the introduction of another Dr should have been a surprise. We are now in an unwelcome position of counting down the clock on Tennant's tenure and awaiting (with great trepidation) the entrance of Matt Smith. Therefore what place does a special like POTD have in that context? Very little I'm afraid. I don't care about Lady De Sousa or a double decker bus, I only care about what is going to happen to the Doctor. Thus impatience with such specials is understandable particularly when sub standard and a gross mistake in not anticipating by R.T. Davies.

lady de souza = lara croft. just awful.
John, Walsall on April 14th, 2009
Embarassing to say the least, Guy in a blue box, 2 hearts, travels through time & space, box is bigger inside than out, yes can believe all that, no problem. London bus flying about all over the place ? , come on on RTD, stop making it so bloody ridiculous. (almost a as bad as the tardis towing back the earth ! (first rule of good sci-fi, have a grain of believability in it, however far fetched the idea) Lets have real monsters (not awful totally unconvincing CGI), suspense, drama. Bring this show back to the people who remember Genesis of the daleks, robots of death etc etc. not this twee garbage aimed at 4 year olds. There are thousands of decent sci-fi stories to draw inspiration from. Dr who should be still make people hide behind the sofa, not laugh at it !

I thought it wasnt as gd as the others but i still thought it was brilliant!!
Richard, Surrey on April 13th, 2009
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought Michelle Ryan was very good and it is a shame that The Doctor did not let her travel with him; it was a far better relationship that they had than any of the ones he has had with other companions to date.
PT - Sussex on April 13th, 2009
i thought this was the 'worst episode ever' the accent from Lady Christina, so false, the trying to chew the drs face off.... wrong!!!!
Lucy, London on April 13th, 2009
It wasn't the best episode, though I think the digital spy reviewer is abit harsh on Ryan. I thought the woman being able to "hear" voices was rather badly done. And nothing more was made of the army woman holding the scientist at gunpoint! That was really awful of her to do such a thing, and she would have shot him too if things hadn't happened soon enough. The doctor should have atleast told her off or something...
Dr Fan London on April 13th, 2009
Episode was .. OK. This review... rubbish. Ignore it completely.. in fact.. take everything he said and assume 100% the opposite, and you'd be pretty close. Oh well... don't know why we bother reading this sort of stuff anyway. Just watch the show and use your own intelligence.
Paul, Hyde, Cheshire on April 13th, 2009
Anyone who disliked this special should look at how awful some of the Colin Baker stories were.

I loved it!!! I was a little suspicious of Michelle Ryan but thought all in all she was great!! AND would make a good companion in the future. Well done Russell T Davis for yet another fab episode.

it was terrible the worst doctor who ever!
Thomas Scott-Adams Westmidlands England on April 13th, 2009
Well i think it will be the master in the end because 4 knocks remember in sound of the drums that tapping that everyone was doing i thought it was his heart beat, you know because he has two hearts but he might make the doctor regenerate into matt smith
Anna, London on April 13th, 2009
I beg to differ: I thought the episode was awesome, and also it was more convincing that some of the far-too-ambitious ones... I have to disagree with the above verdict. It was great. Get over it.
Bob, Liverpool on April 13th, 2009
Once agian, another harsh review. Although, didn't RTD say that these new monsters were meant to be as iconic as the Daleks and Cybermen, I don't think so. But overall, good episode.
Jack Smith, Leeds on April 13th, 2009
I personally think this episode was amazing i mean it was similar to Midnight but the way they pulled it off was awfully fantastic and furthermore it provided lots of drama and humour but it could do a 180 and go to be completley different in the space of a minute just GENIUS and the warnings just make you want to keep watching I also found Lady Christina to be an excellent companion and Lee Evans a hilarious Malcom. ALL IN ALL A WELL ENJOYED EPISODE

Steve, Cheltenham on April 13th, 2009
I have the utmost respect for the production team that resurrected and re-energised Doctor Who. In so many episodes, they've set the highest standards, making quality prime-time TV that has been a major hit around the world. However, to appreciate the highs, you also have to have the occasional low, and I'm afraid this one won't live long in the memory. DT's quirky delivery always adds interest, as do the inclusions of Lee Evans and U.N.I.T, but the plot is weak and confused - indeed I found it dull for the most part and rarely engaging. With the imminent changeover in both Doctor & Executive Producer, I suspect it was a deliberate policy to take you in a completely different direction and shake it up a bit, but despite more ominous moments ('They're coming' and the tease for the other 3 specials) suggesting drama & excitement to come, it's unusually an episode I won't particularly want to watch again. It doesn't plumb the depths of 'Love & Monsters' in Series 2 which was frankly diabolical, but Michelle Ryan's perkyness can't cover the fact she has no warmth or depth - qualities captured so well by Rose & Donna. Thank goodness Lady Christina hasn't got a return ticket! And the less said about the pathetic men in insect suits the better! I'm a huge fan of the programme usually, but this was a big disappointment. The good news is that standards on this show rarely slip. Getting to the top is hard enough. Staying at the top over a period of time is much harder, so we can only hope the next instalment delivers where this one sadly fails.

Stuart, East London on April 13th, 2009
Roll on RTD finally disappearing from the franchise.I'm truly tired of seeing a love story shoe horned into every episode he is behind. While I appreciate Who being pushed in a fresh direction for a "younger" audience there are limits about what should be done with a British TV icon. Is it any real wonder that Moffat's stories are far more plot driven and show a far greater sense of desperation of the Dr's situation while RTD then comes back in with episodes focusing on love stories that leave me reaching for a bucket? "Who" of old never had so this much love for humans and sure as hell wouldn't fall for a deluge of women each series. I pray that the next 3 specials are RTD free and that he disappears back to doing his cutesy love fests like Queer as folk. Good riddance Russell
