Gillian Anderson has been asked to make a cameo appearance in Doctor Who, according to reports.

Producers of the hit BBC show are said to be eager to secure the former X-Files actress for a guest appearance later in the year.

"Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following following and it's felt it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who," a source told the Daily Express.

Writers allegedly want Anderson to play a villain and arch enemy of the Time Lord.

"The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list," said the insider.

"It would undoubtedly be regarded as one of those great sci-fi moments if the star of The X-Files gets to clash with The Doctor."

Anderson recently admitted that she struggled to resurrect her character Dana Scully in last year's The X-Files: I Want To Believe.
