The opening episode of Doctor Who's new season used groundbreaking special effects technology that was created for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Post-production company The Mill deployed a visual effects software programme known as 'Massive' for scenes that contain large numbers of 'Adipose' - the monsters in 'Partners In Crime' - for the first time ever on television. Stephen Regelous, who created the technology and won an Oscar in 2004 for his work on Lord of the Rings, flew to London from New Zealand to undertake work on the BBC science fiction series.
Regelous told The Guardian: When I first found out that The Mill was working on Doctor Who, I was quietly hoping that Massive might be used to create hordes of Daleks or Cybermen and with series four, I jumped at the opportunity to be involved. It's been very fulfilling to be a fan from about three or four years old and finally be able to contribute to the Doctor Who universe."
