'Ice' star to undergo surgery after fall

Michael Underwood is to undergo surgery after breaking his right ankle during rehearsals for Dancing On Ice.

The GMTV presenter was forced to pull out of the show yesterday after tripping while practising his new routine with dance partner Melanie Lambert on Wednesday.

A visit to a specialist revealed that he needs to have a metal plate fitted in his leg and must remain in hospital for three days.

He told GMTV viewers: "'I've got to go and have surgery on Monday, so I'm in hospital for three days. I've got to have a metal plate screwed on to my bone at the bottom, and have my ankle moved back, because what's happened is the tendons have broken, and this means that the ankle slipped out of joint so it's all got to be slipped back into place."

He added that he was worried about feeling bored after months of training for the ITV1 ice-skating contest, saying: "It's been my life for the last three months - three hours a day, five days a week. I don't know what I'm going to do now, apart from get out of shape!"

Dancing On Ice continues at 6.10pm on Sunday.
