ntl is planning to boost the speed of its entry-level broadband service from 128kbps to 150kbps per month, sources have told us. Digital Spy presents a roundup of the other changes subscribers can expect from the cable operator in May.
Internet
The 128kbps internet service will become £17.99 per month from May 1st, up from £14.99. However, the downstream speed of the service also increases to 150kbps. All other internet access services provided by the cable operator remain unchanged. With broadband becoming one of cable's most successful offerings, it is unsurprising that ntl is seeking to boost revenue especially at the entry-level. The speed boost to 150kbps should make the price increase a little less controversial.
Phone
No pricing changes are being made to ntl's Standard or "Talk" packaged telephony services.
Television
The base pack for digital cable will be £18 per month from May 1st. The mid-tier offering, comprising the Variety, General Entertainment, News and Documentaries, Kids and Music packs, will be £25 per month; while the Family Pack, ntl's top non-premium pack, will go up to £28 per month.
Customers who also subscribe to Sky Movies and/or Sky Sports will see a £1 increase in their monthly TV bill. In a letter announcing the changes to customers, ntl:home's MD Aizad Hussain said: "In January Sky increased all of their prices and their charges to us. We have absorbed this increase so far, but now we have to adjust our prices too." All other premium channels are not affected.
The Hangama Pack, a deal combining the TV Base Pack, Talk Unlimited Local, International Call Plan and Sony Entertainment Television Asia, will be reduced from £25 per month to £23.50 per month.
No price changes will be made to ntl's analogue cable TV services.
Sources indicate confirmation from ntl about these changes should come towards the end of this month, with letters explaining the changes going out with customers' bills from March 25th.
