BBC Two first for analogue switchoff

BBC Two will be the first station to go black when analogue shutdown commences in 2008, it was revealed yesterday.

The digital switchover process will take place on a region by region basis, beginning with Border and finishing with Ulster at the end of 2012.

As shutdown approaches in each region, BBC Two will be the first to disappear. A small "grace period" - likely to be a few weeks - will follow before the remaining four terrestrials close down.

"You'll probably have a ticker tape at the bottom of your TV giving you a countdown as to when switchover happens," said Ford Ennals, chief executive of switchover body Digital UK. "And on the day after switchover you'll be told that if you want to get BBC Two now it's available digitally for you and you need to make sure you switch."
