I just read this. Thankfully have a 40gb version. However, I heard it's happening on some Xbox 360 versions too (only seems to happen on Special Edition). But that could just be Sony fanboys trying to start a rumour also lol

From N4G -

Matthew Griffin at PSN At Home reports "Alright, so I got home from the midnight release with my copy of GTA IV Collectors Edition unpacked it live on the feed installed and guess what, it froze! I tried a couple more times and it even have reinstalled 3 times, it still keeps freezing. I am not alone, from the looks of it, it is the 60 GB Launch PS3 that is having the problems and might be just the Collectors Edition of GTA IV. Jeffrey Tavares has the regular edition and a launch PS3 and is now running the Live Feed. I will keep everyone up to date as much as possible!"

UPDATE: It looks like there are multiple assumptions. First off it is not only the Collectors Edition, so far though I have only heard of 60 GB version freezing. Although thing which is the latest I have heard from Tech Support is that it may be a Shotty Batch of games that have been sent to GameStop. If you are having this problem and did not get at Gamestop Please let Tech Support know at the following Number(s) America: 1-866-405-5464 or Canada: 1-800-269-5721
Updates:
UPDATE2: It is not just 60 GB Launch PS3s, I know 60 GB PS3s that are not launch and launch 20GB PS3s having the problem. I have just attempted a quick format (full one takes 3 1/2 hours so not trying) and installing GTA IV Again will update once I know something!

UPDATE3: So the Quick Format did not work, and it is not only the PS3 having these problems it appears. I am also finding reports of Xbox 360's having Lock up issues. I do not know if it is wide spread or even related to the Playstation Issues. I am currently re-installing GTA IV for the 5th time this time after a Quick System Restore in which it erased the Hard Drive and reset all the default system settings. As soon as I know more I will update.

UPDATE4: Well the quick system restore didn't do anything. I had all the extras disabled and didn't help one bit. All I can suggest currently is to call where you got your game first thing when they open and tell them to give you another copy to try. Good Luck to all!

It seems a bit dodgy to me, if you look at the posts they were all posted yesterday. The US release date is the same as ours and judging by the time at the moment its 5.32 am in New York & 2.32am on the East Coast. I think it may be a hoax

Same here. Have been playing all this morning and it's playing fine. The frame rate is a bit sluggish at times, but hey, it wouldn't be a true GTA game without little glitches!!!!

Been playing for about 7 hours on 40g PS3 and it has frozen once, just after I'd completed a long mission, luckily it had just saved though.

Is that because of coding problems in the game or is it a problem with the ps3 itself.

I've had a few freezes on my 60GB. Sometimes it will freeze while I'm driving, leave it for a few seconds an it's all okay. But I've had a couple where I had to restart the PS.

I just had a freeze on my version on the 360.I have played 6 hours flat and had no problem up until that point though.Good job there is an auto save function, else the 360 would be smashed to bits now

Well, I finally got home last night at about 11pm - after the install, the opening cinematic and going to Roman's "Mansion" ) I thought I'd just driving around for a bit before trying the missions. It froze a couple of times but only for like s second or two. By 11.29pm it froze completely! I turned off my PS3 and went to sleep at that point, a little disappointed.

Did anyone else think this has got to be the longest ever install/intro for a Console game? Loved the intro movie, really set the scene, but boy did I get fed up watching those Still images repeated revolve round, apart from the lollypop

Luckily no freezing yet found and had been playing yesterday from about 17:30 - 23:30. Fantastic game and am amazed at the graphic detail. Takes a while to get used to, but looks great. Running @ 720p on a 22" monitor, then tried on a CRT television. All looks good.

p.s. Love the Sat Nav (nice touch......Turn Left)

Was playing this from about 11 til 7pm yesterday on a 60gb pal ps3 and not had it freeze once which i'm happy with. Big difference from it constantly freezing up on cod4 when theres any intense battle.

Also in response to previous post i was logged into the psn too.

Freezing on US import 80GB PS3

I have a US 80GB PS3 (the one bundled with MotorStorm) and I've had lots of freezing problems playing the UK release of GTA IV. At first I thought it was the fact I'm using a US console, but from what I've read, I'm not convinced that has anything to do with it.

My first freeze came about an hour after starting the game. The sound carried on playing, but the display froze. It remained frozen for about 20-30 seconds, then came back to life. This has happened many times. I've had 3 or 4 incidents where it hasn't come back to life and I had to reset the console. Again, the sound carried on playing, but the picture froze. Holding the PS button on the controller had no effect. I had to switch off the console to get out of it (or eject the disc)

Possibly unrelated, I've had no luck connecting to online multiplayer. At first, I thought this might be a region issue (i.e. GTA detects I have a US console, tries to attach to a US-specific server and isn't allowed to as I'm outside the US). A Google search later and I felt a bit better to find that everybody seems to be having problems connecting online.

Does anyone know if GTA has a built-in mechanism to check for the availability of patches/updates online and download them automatically? I hope Rockstar have made some provision like this or they're going to be screwed and I suspect this could have a significant effect on the uncertain fate of the PS3 in general.

Simon.
