The weakest this series for me, infact personally I found it to be one of the worst eps of new who.
There didn't seem to be any proper plot, the whole thing felt rushed and under developed and completely pointless. The character of Jenny annoyed me right from when she was introduced (not even annoyed in a good way like Rattigan from the Sontaran episodes). Everything she said felt completely contrived and false and for once the Doctor was annoying me as well. I also failed to see the point of Martha being there, it felt like we need Martha in 3 episodes lets shove her in with the enemies in The Doctors Daughter. Completely pointless! Although I did feel her Hath death scene was rather touching. It was obvious Jenny was going to die, as soon the Doctor said she could come with them and obvious she was gong to come back to life after the long drawn out shots of her body. The death scene failed to do anything for me as I was so sick of the character and I was desperately hoping for there to be a twist, like coming back evil (or just staying dead would have been good), but no such luck. I have never seen Georgia Moffett in anything else so I can't really make a fair comparison, so I thought she was quite weak but that was probably due to the writing more than her acting. The only bit that I was gripped by was the Doctor with the gun "I never would.." DT was very good! Hmmm, a 3 or 4/10, if that, for me and I really hope Jenny doesn't turn up again. I think I was so disappointed because I was expecting this episode to be amazing, it had so much potential and it was really poor. By the trailers next week's looks pretty duff as well so hopefully it suprises me! |

In my opinion, the plot and the pacing in this episode was terrible, however the acting, and especially the dynamic between the doctor and jenny was excellent

I think they shot themselves in the foot with the hype about her being 'the doctors daughter' when she was created and explained in the first 60 seconds. Took all of the interest out of it and the rest of the show was just trying to find a way to make a story out of it. Felt like a case of the Title first, show later, rather than the story being thought of first.
The character was really badly written (far too jolly hockey sticks for a soldier) and badly thought out. Plus the whole Martha stuff was pointless - desperately crying over the death of the hath one minute, fine the next. Added nowt. |

Only bad thing about her was no mention of the Doctor being able to sense her presence. But that might indicate that his ability to sense other Timelords only works when there are enough about, rather than lone individuals. And given that he was in denyal about her, that might have worked against her, as would the too like me stuff. This is someone who is in essence part of the Doctor, perhaps linked at a low level psychic level, and not an extrapolation of a selection of colonists who have had pacifism weeded out. She acts according to the rebelious, anti-authoritarian nature of the Doctor. The whole sodding point about her is that, well spotted you, she isn't a soldier. As to Martha, I was reminded of the Producers, where Bloom has the glass of water thrown over him, and does the I'm frightened and wet bit. Call it post traumatic shock, and that she still isn't fit for the kind of adventures the Doctor has, which is in keeping with the way she reacted when captured by the Sontarans. She calms down when the Doctor is present, or when she knows that at least she's on the same planet as her fiance, and ready to face danger in the company of others. Part of the problem seems to be that, yes there are a few spaces to be filled in the writing, but people insist on picking holes based on what they think is going on, rather than treating what you see on the screen as acted according to the script. To me, Martha is still suffering from trauma, is psychologicaly incapable of acting independantly, has a deep seated need to be in company, of any sort, and will break down under stress. That's what I got from the acting on the screen, and fits the history of the character. |

This week's episode was a lot of fun. I'd watch a Jenny spin-off.

Although the plot was wafer thin, and the hype ludicrously high, I actually loved this episode - felt like an old fashioned DW romp, and all the better for it.
I hope they introduce Jenny on a regular but occasional basis to the main series, like Cap'n Jack, rather than create another spin off. |

Finally got round to viewing this episode.
So much potential in terms of storyline but so little time. Deserved a two parter. Poor Freema was wasted here and it's clear that she appears here only to fufill the terms of her Series 4 contract. She's just padding to the Doctor and Donna. She also gives her worst performance as Martha in this episode in my opinion. The bubble aliens watered down Tennants big speech at the end. The sound of bubbles didn't bring much emotion to an important scene like that. ![]() Georgia Moffet was very easy on the eye but I did find her quite annoying. Probably due to a lack of character development restricted by the lack of a two parter. Average episode. |

I'll accept it as being a combo of both, the point being, as with the Sontarans there's signs of a deep psychological trauma, and a possibility that whilst her time-out to help her family recover has let her avoid her own needs. Point is that Freema was acting the part of someone suffering a panic attack, and similar in the previous episode. And the inconsistancy in her portrayal must be due to the script, a big clue that she can actualy act. |

If you want to get snotty about it, I wasn't picking holes I was pointing them out. You've filled in quite a few holes based on what you wanted to see, none of which was made clear in either the script or the acting. The fact that there were so many threads arguing about how Jenny came back to life is a case in point. It was a tacked on ending that wasn't consistent with anything that had gone before. I'm not saying everything has to be spelled out but the writers should be able to convey a clear logic behind the story and emotions. More to the point, none of it was particularly interesting, leaving the whole thing rather flimsy and utterly unengaging. Or is that the sodding point of writing a story about the doctors daughter: to bore people to death? Having made so much of the fact that the Doctor has lost his family, stories like this have so much potential. That it was thrown away on such a terrible story is a huge waste. I love DW but I'm not going to say everything is wonderful when some things are clearly not. |

The Doctor's Daughter has been given a 12 rating by the bbfc. God knows why, but it "Contains moderate threat", apparently. Although saying no one under 12 should watch it after hundreds of thousands of under 12's already have strikes me as somewhat odd.

Just caught up with this episode, and it was very weak, am constantly amazed at how easily folk dish out the Excellent scores on here.
Weak idea, poorly executed, and poorly directed. Some nice acting, but all in all was filler. Georgia Moffett is gorgeous though. |
