Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

I've never played a Dragon Quest game before, although I'm looking for a new RPG to play over the summer.

Anybody played it and willing to share their experiences?

From what I've read, it seems like a pretty old fashioned RPG, which is fine by me. After playing so many real-time RPGs like Tales and Star Ocean, I'd like to go back to a turn based game.

Also, could anybody tell me if the game runs alright on the 60gig PS3? I checked Sony's website and it says that the game should play with 'minor issues' - anybody have any idea what they're talking about?

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's a fun game. Quite long 40+ hours, more if you do everything. The characters are funny genuinely so with fine VA. I don't know if it runs on a PS3 though.

I would be careful with this one. It does take a bit of getting used to but once you've adapted its quite engaging.

I have not beaten it yet but I did play 60 hours of it before giving up. I'm thinking of replaying it and beating it soon.

BUT after star ocean, the battle system is going to feel slow. You may be crying for on screen enemies as well as DQ VIII's encounter rate is really high!

Thanks for your imput guys, I ordered Dragon Quest along with Rogue Galaxy.

I don't know why I got both, because there's no way I'll have time to get through one .

Slow is good!

It's been so long since I played a good turn based RPG that I'm looking forward to sitting around and thinking through my moves. :]
Star Ocean 3 probably has my favourite battle system of any game I've played tbh. It's just that the rest of the game feels a little flat - like it's lacking in character or something, I don't know.

You might be right about the random battles though, I don't know how well I'll manage there!

Rogue Galaxy is an awesome game. Its by the same developer of DQVIII as well. There are some similarities between the two. Both are very long. I finished RG in 94 hours excluding the optional dungeons and a handful of optional content. I played 60 something hours DQ VIII and I was only over half way. I don't think you'll have much time to play half of one.

I agree about star ocean 3. The battle system is one the best alongside FFX-2's. Pepitta was so powerful.
I have yet to play any of the optional stuff ( the sphere dungeon) plus I am curious to see if Freya is as hard as they say. I feel the story had potential to be good but they handled the plot twist badly.

Like I said, DQ VIII takes a bit of getting used to. Those random encounters are bad BUT the game is decentely challenging, strategic boss battles and lots of equipment. Shame you never have enough money to buy any.

To be honest, I only made it about 20 hours into Star Ocean (only?! XP) before I gave up. The battle system is fantastic, but the game just didn't really grab me. One day I'd like to go back and get a little further in, but the story and characters aren't exactly making me too excited at the prospect.

I've not started Rogue Galaxy yet, and I probably wont for a while. I only really bought it because it was a good deal and I knew that some I'd like to start it one rainy day :[ .

Dragon Quest is fantastic though, I can completely see why these games are so popular! It's not the most inventive story from what I've seen so far, but the characters are brilliant. It doesn't take itself quite as seriously as I thought it would, especially with some of the monsters. I'm loving the designs - you can really see the Dragonball Z connection

So yeah, so far so good. The game flows really nicely, and even though they dungeons are pretty basic, they're pretty short at the same time so it's not as though it's a chore to crawl through them all.

Happy gamere here.

I guess your an old school gamer but I do suggest you play SO3 again because the the second disk is actually challenging. The story and characters won't improve much but it does change from the "go there then here" disk one.

How far are you in DQ VIII?

You like the story? I must admit, despite its simplicity it is fairly likable.

I had Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for Xmas a few years back and I, to, also got about 20 hours into it. It's a fun, involving game which I will get back to one day. I also own DQ8, RG and FFXII. I haven't really had the time to get into them properly yet but will do - one day...probably.

Well after a couple of sleepless nights, I've just reached the part where

spoiler:
the party chases Doulmalgus (not the easiest name to spell ) to a cave up north, but it's protected by a spell or something, so I'm just about to go look for a mirror

I think I'm going to take a break from the main story and have a poke around the world map and see what there is. I feel as though I've been going through everything a little too quickly.

The story is really pretty basic, but that's not neccessarily a bad thing. It's all pretty camp and lighthearted, which is a good change of pace from most RPGs - especially with the mockney accents everywhere!

I love the Final Fantasy series, but I just couldn't get into XII at all. The difficulty in the game is really strange; at times you can pass through areas fairly easily, and then they through something at you that's completely out of place with the previous difficulty curve, then it goes way back down and you feel really overpowered until the next spike a little later.

I haven't got that far in FFXII but do like the game. I'll probably buy a guide to help me with those troublesome spots like I did with SO: TtEoT.

Your there already!? Your rushing it a bit!

What level are you? Douhlmagus can be tough.

BTW I love FFXII. I was a bit underwhelmed by it at first but it really grew on me. I have spent 117 hours on the game and that was just the story.

Its one of those games you should take your time with. I agree with the games broken difficulty though.

Ah! This is awesome. You sound like you are into the exact type of RPGs as I am!

I loved Dragon Quest! Have you played Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle (aka Dark Cloud 2)? They're 2 of my favourite PS2 games and are made by Level 5. They are action RPGs rather than turn-based and they have other aspects to them - they're not just simply RPGs. If you haven't played them then I would beg you to start with the first one. It hasn't got as good reviews but it is still awesome. I have Rogue Galaxy too but haven't played it yet

I felt the same about Star Ocean as you. It was ok/good but I gave up after a while after losin interest.

neenaw,

So far, Dragon Quest VIII is definetely one of the best RPGs that I've played. I can't wait for the DS remakes to be released in English now!

Oh, and I haven't played either of the games that you mentioned, although I have heard of them. I did see them mentioned quite a lot when I was looking up Rogue Galaxy.

Yeah, I might have over done it with pulling all-nighters to play.

I haven't really gotten much further in the past few days, I'm just trying to level up some before I go any further. The Hero at the moment is about level 27, but I feel a little underpowered compared to the monsters on the field. Maybe I just need to save up some cash so that I can get some better weapons and armour.

Oh, and I've gone up a few grades in the Monster Arena as well .

I am pretty positive that you would love Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle. I love them even more than DQVIII I'm thinking now though that the first one might be quite hard to get hold of.

Level 5 are making Dark Cloud 3 for the PS3 and omg I can't wait. That'll be the day I buy a PS3

I suggest you try to get angelo to about Lv 30. From my memory, he learns a skill that actually makes him useful.

Though leveling in this game is difficult. Try killing some liquid metal slimes. 10000 EXP per one.

I did warn you about money LOL

Phew, I managed to finish the game last night - it was fantastic!

I'm a complete Dragon Quest convert now. Bring on the DS remakes!

Did you ever go back to it Xadlei?

Unfortunately, I am working now so it means I don't have an amazingly large amount of time to play games. However, it means I can buy more.

I'd like to but right now I have my XBOX 360 in and I'm playing through the following:

Lost Odyssey
Infinite Undiscovery
Eternal Sonata
Blue dragon

And there is a few RPG's for the GBA/DS to play as well as a few PS2 games AND I'm thinking of buying a PSP soon so thats even more.

I honestly don't think I will see my PS2 out until next year. I'd probably play the new DQIV remake for DS before getting anywhere near DQVIII again.

Its a good game but I have a strong craving for Star ocean 3 right now (and the remake of the original for PSP just released). Heck, I might even try a tales game to familarise myself with that series.

I am drooling for RPG's right now.
