Want Sky HD, but no HDMI on my telly
Hi folks,
I want to upgrade to Sky HD, but my Phillips HD telly has no HDMI input - only a DVI. However, I already use the DVI input for my Media Center PC (which I use a lot). Is it possible for me to get an HDMI-to-DVI cable and a DVI switcher that would allow me to use both? How is audio handled with Sky HD if I use an HDMI>DVI cable? I currently use the audio in on the telly for the Media Center PC. Best, CDC |

It will work fine with a switch, DVI doesn't handle sound, so you need a separate audio lead, your TV will have a socket for it (usually a 3.5mm stereo socket like on a PC).

Your Sky installer should have everything you need, save your money.

i cant imagine the sky installer would supply a switch to enable both devices to be plugged in at the same time, but yes, they should have a hdmi->dvi cable

He certainly won't have a switch, and I would be surprised if they still carry DVI adaptors?, as DVI sets are pretty old now. Rather like the Thomson boxes with Component sockets, you would expect anyone wanting HD on such old sets to have done it long ago.

Thanks guys.
Having looked through the forum, I'm finding a lot of people having trouble getting HDMI>DVI to work on Phillips TVs (mine's is a Phillips). I currently use the audio-in 3.5" socket for the Media Center PC's audio, so that would need a switcher too. I'm starting to think I might be better getting a new HD telly... Anyone have any recommendations in the £300 region in a 26"? Best, CDC |

Hi, if you have no seperate amplification (av reciever or amp) then a simple HDMI --> DVI cable or adapter will work. DVI is just the predecessor to HDMI (HDMI having the ability to transmit audio and other data through a friction mount connector rather than a screw type) Along with a Phono to 3.5mm lead that you already have from your media centre, this will work a treat.
DVI supports HDCP (copy control that HDMI carries) so assuming your panel supports HDCP through DVI then you should not have an issue. DNZ |
