Let's not forget Mills was a pretty bog-standard link-song-link-song-song-link style DJ until about 2003 when he upped his game, and got the afternoon job. You can hear a lot of the same potential in Greg James.
The genius of swooping on him while he was still on student radio is they get someone who can genuinely identify with much of the target audience, plus hasn't had to spend much of his working life doing top-ten-at-ten and the whole ILR crap before being expected to adapt to Radio 1 (JK and Joel, I'm looking at you). I expect his salary expectations were a tad lower than an ILR jock too! FWIW - and I know we're all speculating - I don't think R1 can afford to put Mills on breakfast given he's an identical age to Moyles (and his show is also sounding a bit tired IMHO), and all eyes will be on refreshing R1 for a younger audience with the new government coming in. Vernon Kay is also the wrong side of 30 so unlikely, especially given he'd have to pretty much abandon much of his TV career. I'd put my money either on Greg after a few years of developing, or someone new entirely - which is precisely what they did with Chris Evans and Zoe Ball, and Sara Cox had only been there a few months when she got the gig. The big mystery to me in the new lineup is Dev. Nothing against the guy personally, and he seems to have been on 1Xtra for years, but how on earth he got a five times a week gig and depping ond drivetime when he's so BORING is beyond me! What an awful show... |

Having said that, 80s and 90s retro themes etc often gain cult status among younger audiences, as I'm sure audience research in the younegr end of the dmeographic would reveal. Sure, it's not for everyone - but it works for many. My point about Aled is if you wnat to label him as "token comedy gay" that's you're opinion, albeit deeply flawed and more than a tad offensive to the guy. |

It's not deeply flawed is it ? It's exactly the same as John Inman on Are You Being Served ? "you play the part of a flamboyant homosexual" It's actually a lot more offensive that we have to hear this outdated stereotype being portrayed.

Er, no it isn't. It's very different. I doubt that Aled would play up to anything he's not comfortable with. Trust me on that one.

I don't think R1 are overly bothered by ratings, hence the decision to put FC on mid-mornings. She sounds 'young' - and that seems to tick a lot of boxes at Yalding House at the mo. |

Yes 5live is perfect for him just the sound of his voice and no records to get in the way of his talk show. |

If Vernon Kay is too old to succeed Chris Moyles, who do you think should replace?

Well that is a hard question I have to be honest. There is not much talent out there thanks to the destruction of local radio. Where do they recruit from? Who has been grounded well in radio and young enough for Radio 1? Any Capital jocks worth poaching ?

Zane Lowe? I believe he has sat in for Moyles before.

Can't imagine Zane wanting to do daytime. He likes specialist. Plus again, he is too old for a new breakfast jock on the young Radio 1.
