It was actually Dave Rowe, not Simon Humphreys, reporting from Goodison Park this afternoon. (If it's any consolation, I mistook Dave for Simon on here the other week!)

Roger Hughes was at Cardiff-Ipswich, although I didn't hear any reports on Kettering-Leeds as I was watching the game and wasn't listening.

Also, good to hear Mick Dennis co-hosting Football First on Sunday alongside Ian Danter this afternoon in the absence of Ray Houghton. I enjoyed what I heard of the Danter/Dennis pairing - they have a very natural sounding rapport.

Nice to hear that Graham Beecroft was reporting on El Gran Classico tonight - takes me back to years gone by when Paul Breen-Turner would report on Real Madrid matches during David Beckham's tenure at the Bernabeu.

Finally, talkSPORT's commentary next Saturday will be Blackburn Rovers v Liverpool.

Geoff Peters was reporting on the Kettering v Leeds tie on TalkSport, but I'm pretty sure that he wasn't at the ground, as there was a distinct lack of background noise

Thanks Grahamjoanne.

Given that Geoff Peters (their Leicestershire-based East Midlands correspondent) is probably the closest to Kettering of the football reporters they regularly call upon, it makes sense that he was covering this game for them.

Is that the same Roger Hughes who was at Radio Merseyside?

I remember him doing reports on Five Live in the mid-90s (at least, I remember a reporter of that name who sounded Liverpudlian, so it must be the same man).

You wait for an answer for a few hours, then a flurry of three come along at once!

According to Andy Rimmer in this post in the Radio Sports Commentators and Reporters thread, it's the same Roger Hughes.

I'm not familiar with Roger's work from Radio Merseyside, but I know he's been reporting for talkSPORT since last season. He tends to report on Welsh internationals and home games involving Cardiff and Swansea.

Before 2008/09, he was a football commentator on BBC Radio Wales - I remember he would often do FM commentaries on Saturday games involving the then-three Welsh league clubs during 2004/05 and 2005/06 when I was based in Wales. Perhaps Ian Cleverly can offer a few more details about his time as a regular on Radio Wales.

In addition to his talkSPORT commitments, this season Roger's also commentated on a rugby union game for BBC Radio Manchester and reported on RU for both Five Live and Real Radio South Wales.

I'm a bit puzzled by Robin's comment though - I've always thought Roger sounded South Walian!

Actually, you're probably right. I can't recall the voice as clearly as all that, to be honest, and I'm probably misremembering it. I know people from *North* Wales often sound rather Scouse, but people from South Wales obviously don't.

Cheers guys, I remember Roger commentating the night Grimsby beat Liverpool in the League Cup. The commentary was simulcasted on Five Live as the line to their commentary team went down!

I'm not that familiar with his work in Wales, and can't remember him doing many Cardiff City commentaries (it was either Rob Phillips or John Hardy).

Perhaps he was lumbered with Wrexham?

An early request for this weekend (December 5th), I'll be going to see the Baa-Baas V New Zealand at 'Rugby HQ', so does anyone fancy filling in the Radio Wales and/or Radio Bristol / Somerset details?

From what I remember of the days when I used to listen semi-regularly, he did tend to get a fair few Wrexham games. Hardy and Phillips, probably Radio Wales' "top two" football commentators then and now, would alternate between the more glamorous matches involving Cardiff and Swansea at that point.

Out of interest Ian, do you know when he stopped commentating regularly on Radio Wales' football coverage? Would it have been during 2007/08 or earlier?

I would usually offer to cover Radio Wales but it's likely I'll be at a match on Saturday. I'll post back later in the week if this changes though.

Very disappointed that Radio Scotland have no coverage whatsoever of the SFL and Scottish Cup games tonight.

During the first half last night, Richard Wilford mentioned that he was standing in for Mike Taylor, who had originally been pencilled in as WM's match commentator at Fratton Park before taking a funny turn on Sunday after the Wolves v Blues game.

I hope this is not serious and that he's on the mend, get well soon Mike.

That was Mike Hughes, wasn't it, because I remember he actually finished his commentary by saying "Mike Hughes, BBC Radio Merseyside", clearly the station's regular signoff. Mike Hughes did some Sports Extra commentaries in its first year or so.

Roger Hughes worked for BBC Merseyside from 1985 to 1999 so it would have been Mike Hughes.

According to THIS Roger Hughes has been freelance since May 2008. - One of his work examples on that link btw is a Cardiff City commentary.
