Xtreme Radio 1431

hope its ok to promote this...

If you are close to Swansea City Centre try tuning your radio in to 1431AM - there you will find Xtreme Radio which is Swansea University's own station - it carried SBN when no local shows are going out

Now - I am startting a show there Thursday mornings 10am till 11am - check out http://212.67.202.196/~philengland/xtremeradioshow.html - you can also listen on line!

As for not seeing the transmitter i assume you mean transmitting aerial?

Anyway, here's what a LPAM transmitting aerial looks like

Since Xtreme has been transmitting I have been doing various tests to see the full range of the AM signal while picking up my missus from university there.

The transmittor must be extremly low powered! You loose the signal by the time you get off the campus!!! That said, Xtreme Radio is not exactly a great radio station, and has some really dire shows on it.

You'd all be better advised to listen via the internet stream, much better quality sound (sorry.. doesnt help the programming though!).

hmm....

What is it with LPAM's getting of campus well, but poor on campus?

Frequency 1350 (UCLAN) is another one like that - easier to get at my house (about 5km as the bird flys) than in the middle of campus

i have no problems with getting the station on am even in llanelli! - and my friends in sandfeilds can get it on their hifi (saying that listening in the car isnt exacly ideal for listening to am - so much going on electrics wise causing interfearence!)

as to programming - from thursday all that will change (well for an hour at least - as my 80s show takes to the air!)

who will be crowned 'brainbox of the day' with the mystery year?
duran duran with the twin spin
and lots of 8s songs (or as many as i can fit in to 57 mins!)

Just watch the terms of the licence - you may find there's a term in there which prevents you claiming or advertising coverage outside of your campus (or whatever the defined service area is). It'd be just your bad luck to have someone from OFCOM visiting the university...

I thought as the subject was being brought up, that you might be interested in hearing a show on Xtreme, which I am a presenter of. It's not sensational, but it's not what I would call dire either. Anyway, if you fancied listening to a (hopefully) humourous talk show format, edited down to highlights, then please go to our official homepage-Two Robbies- Faces for Radio

I think its fantastic to see my local (well not really, but it's the nearest Student station in this area) student station getting some publcity on here - I am under the impression that the station is undergoing some radical changes and as such I imagine it will involve - and I know that under Binda (who a lot of people I've spoken to have a lot of time for) they have a station manager who has what it takes to make it decent.

It'll take time but I'll keep my eye on them! Good Luck on the new studios guys

What kind of show are you thinking of doing, I mean- I gather it will include 80's music from your webpage, but are you going to try and get mates to call in and so forth? I only ask because the phone can be awakward to use on air unless you have used it a few times before.

As far as needing help, I'm sure you'll be fine. The studio is a dive, the levels are erratic, and something always seems to go wrong, so I guess just use it for some experience, it's not like many people are able of listening anyway, and it isn't like the quality on the station is that high anyway. (*Cough* The Society Treasurers and Programming Head's slot* Cough*)

By the way- if you did want to sample the show, then I would suggest Show 9, broadcast on the 26/1/04. The latest show was a bit off the boil because of a change of presenters for the show. *This is the last shameless shill of my radio show* (for now )

If you needed anybody to be in the studio just to be there to consult if you had any problems, then I am sure I could help out, or send along my co-presenter to be on hand, if that sounds good, then just say the word, and I'll get in contact via Swansea's internal e-mail system.

It's quite heartening to know that I'm not the only one who subjects my better half to crackly reception along Fabian Way.

I find in the car, it's only really listenable from Sainsbury's onwards.

Anyway, I'll be listening. I like a bit of 80s music. Can you play Aztec Camera's Deep & Wide & Tall ?

Hello, I am James and I also contribute to the Two Robbies show in a very half hearted manner (jingles and stuff). When it's good, it's worth a listen (Monday 10 - 11), check out http://rob.yagibare.co.uk/faces for details. There is an interview they did with former Talk Radio and Virgin presenter Nick Abbot on there too. (will that do, yagi?)

I will listen to your show Phil, it's good to see people being enthusiastic about their shows. Can you play the Housemartins or Duran Duran for me please?

OMG! people reading this thread will actually think that people listen to Xtreme Crud 1431! lol. Knowing many dozens of students that I do who are at Uni in Swansea, I can assure you they all stay well clear of it!

That said, Phil.. Duran Duran would be nice, at least that'll be 3 and a half minutes of quality radio.

I've been listening to a few student stations on-line and, as you say, the vast bulk of it is truly dreadful.

It's like panning for gold, in all the silt you occasionally find something of value.
