What pets did you have as a child?

More interested in what you had as a kid rather than what you have now. Any funny stories relating to them?

OMG I had everything, dog, cats, rabbits, guinea-pigs, hamsters, gerbils, pet mice, terrapins, tortoises, newts, frogs.

We had a gerbil that bit us every time we tried to handle him. We gave him to the local school, not my school, and had the head-teacher bring it back after a week. It had bitten all the kids. Totally wild and untameable. Had it put down at the RSPCA.

We bought a mongrel puppy from a pet shop on 5th Nov one year and called it Sparky. He just wouldn't be house-trained and my dad got up to piles of poo on the floor every morning. He was wild and then he bit the postman so the cops became involved. My parents had to have him put down but lied to me and said he'd gone to live on a farm.

My parents let me have anything so long as I kept them in the cellar out of their way. Had a hamster and it was so cold down there that it hibernated. We thought it was dead as it was in a hard ball so threw it in the bin. Was empty as the bin-men had just been. Next day mum found it walking about in the bottom.

I had caterpillars in a fish tank. I slept in the attic. Well they all escaped one day but we couldn't find any. Looked up at the ceiling and there were dozens of chrysalises hanging down!! I sure checked my bed that night.

Had two pet white mice in a WOODEN small cage. Erm not a good idea though the pet shop did sell them! Next day a hole in the side and no mice!

Ah, the old 'gone to live on a farm' story. So many children have been told that over the years. However, I was told the truth as an 11 year old that my cat had feline leukaemia and had to be put to sleep and for him to live in suffering wasn't fair.

My first pets were a tortoise and a white cat with one blue eye and one green eye (not the aforementioned cat).

We always had cats as well as the likes of goldfish and terrapins-they were my brother's pets. He wasn't mad about cats.

Loads; cats, a dog, rats, gerbils, guinea pigs, a rabbit (briefly) and fish. We could've opened up a zoo.

I wanted a cat for years and was often seen coaxing them out of other people's gardens and then locking them in our shed telling my mum I had 'found' it! Of course she never believed me until we did get a stray that never left. I used to push it around tucked up in my doll's pram with a bonnet on. It never liked me.

I also had a whole jar of ladybirds which I accidentally knocked over in the living room - my mum went mad. She then proceeded to hoover them all up whilst I cried my eyes out and called her a murder!!

Yeah they said he gone to a farm as he'd have other dogs for company and plenty of space. He was one crazy wild Heinz '57. They only told me the truth years later.

We had a tortoise in an enclosure on the lawn but he kept escaping and walking down the road.

I won loads of goldfish at the fair too!!

i think it got a mite in its ears, and it scratched them both down to gnarly scabs before they died and dropped off.

didn't seem to bother it, and it lived quite happily for a long time with no ears at all

Various goldfish.

Cats:

Minnie - ran off the week before we moved out of London. Never seen again.

Inky (mother of Minnie) - we had her for over a decade before she got ill and couldn't keep food down. She was euthanized.

Eric (named after a Monty Python sketch) - my mum had him put down without advance warning. Not sure why.

The usual cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

We also had a cow (well bull actually) that lived on my grandads small holding we called the cow 'Mummyless' can you guess why? lol

My brother and I were gutted one year when we went to visit him to find he'd been sent to slaughter - never forgave them.

I feel for you (and Mummyless lol). We had a pig, Delilah, who I was fond but wary of, as she was grumpy old sow, then one day she'd nipped once to often and Delilah went to pig heaven. I still remind them of their cruelty!!

Ducks, one of them started to attack my mum so we had to give them away, chickens who went to a farm in the end. My brother had a hamster that hated being picked up and a rabbit that was scared of everything.

My dad found a pheasant wondering about in the middle of a road, we had him for a while and he always stayed close to the wall when he walked around the house. I had a quail with one leg, a crow flew off with her.

We had 3 cats, 2 birds, a rabbit and a dog.

Two of those cats are still with us (17 and 19 now) and the third left home when we got our Irish Setter in 1995 (she died aged 12 on the 11th of June 2007), the budgies were called Pinky and Perky - with Pinky outliving Perky by a number of years. We had a rabbit called Bunny who died when he was 9 in the 90's and a yorkshire terrier called Minnie. She died in 1997 aged 13.

We got Dolly the yorkie in 1996 and she died on the 7th of March this year.

After Bunny, we had Amsterdam (he was a dutch ) and then we had Selsey (a dwarf lop) who died on the 12th of November 2000.

We've had Jack, our cocktiel, for about 15/16 years now.

We had some cats when I was really little but I don't remember much about them.

So three of our pets from my childhood are still with us and now we have 3 rabbits (aged one year and 7 months), one dog (a three year old setter called Rio [Rioja]), 2 cats and 2 kittens (about 11/12 weeks old) and a cockatiel.

I had a budgie called boy..

When he died my dad took him to Birdie heaven in his lorry

We also had a cat called Nelson. When he was 2 he got hit by a car. He lost an eye and his front paw. I blame my brother fo calling him Nelson.

Also had another cat called Maxamillion. a fish called Wanda ( I know genius!) and a hamster named Levi. My younger sister was quite chavvy!

I had an unruly but sweet Staffy terrier and a long series of increasingly mongrelly rabbits, most of which were rescued strays.
Our oldest bun, who was half French Lop and half marauding wild rabbit, lived to be almost thirteen. He was really laid back and friendly and had loads of character. One of his offspring used to escape and then come back at dinner time.

We had various cats (Ponky, Ginger, Tiggy, Pedro, Nancy Roo, Alex) and dogs (Billy Muffin, Gleason, Badger), a couple of rabbits (Mr Smokey Wiffles and Mr Smokey Wiffles II), a tortoise (Torty), some chickens and a cockrel (Coc Wen - he was white and Welsh), and some goats. Not all at once, but usually at least a few at once. I also had a goldfish called Michael, who I won at the fair, and who lived to over 17.

The goats were lovely - we started with two sisters, and at the most we had 6 - Tansy's three kids and Teazel's one - and six fully grown goats are a handful. Tansy was very gentle and sweet, and she went to live on a farm for adults with learning difficulties, and I think the others went off to various other farms for breeding.

I loved the goats, they were so friendly and interested in everything. I used to take them for walks through the woods, and pretend I was Heidi.

Two cats.

First one was called Snoopy, a nightmare apparantly. Climbed up the curtains. Climbed onto the netting over my cot that kept him away from me.
Ate the christmas turkey one year.
Got run over on the main road.

Second one was called Chivers. Tortoise shell cat, we got her in 1981, hid in wardrobes when we first got her, because she was frightened of us all.

I had 2 fairground goldfish and they both died after a day or 2. I went through a phase of wanting a dog (to name Keegan after Kevin hehe) but I soon got out of it.
