Chris Moyles: I'm not being axed

Last night Chris Moyles was a guest on Alan Carr Chatty Man. Alan congratulated Chris on being Radio 1's longest serving breakfast show presenter.

Chris commented that various tabloids (and used The Sun as an example) keep reporting that he is to be axed due to his age. Chris categorically said that he will be taking a break over Christmas, and his show will return in the New Year. Chris also said that he is here to stay.

So, you've heard it from the horse's mouth.

Where on earth does The Sun, The Daily Mail and Media Guardian get their information from?

Radio 1 "sources" "insiders" and/or a "friend" of Moyles

Expect to see the words "chubby", "fatty" or "roly poly DJ" in any article involving Moyles (or a mention of the ridiculous outrage over the joke linked to Who Do They Think You Are?)

The media (or certain areas) have it "in" for Moyles, probably because he is successful and doesn't pull any punches, he will criticise anyone/anything when they/it deserves it. Most DJ's won't say anything negatove about anything!

I hope Moyles stays for as a long as possible!

Moyles will probably be permitted to present the Radio 1 breakfast show for as long as he wants - just like Terry Wogan has on Radio 2.

If Moyles was axed then he would be a hard act to follow. All of these reports about Moyles losing listeners because he's "too old" is absolute nonsense.

I can't help thinking that he won't be there in a couple of years. Radio 1 seem to be introducing new, younger presenters (quite bland ones too), and sooner or later his age will become a factor. It will be a shame, because IMO him and Scott Mills are really the only listenable DJs on the station during the week, God preserve us from the likes of Fern Cotton!
The fact that I am 40 probably invalidates my opinion though. I'm far outside the target audience.

I suppose you're right. I did not expect Jo Whiley to be relegated to the weekends, which means she will soon be out the door. I guess Chris might get moved to a weekend slot if he is dropped from the breakfast show, but from what he last night he's not going anywhere just yet!

But only 5 years older than Moyles himself so maybe not that invalid.

In their eyes maybe, but I'm 25 and agree with every word of it

I have to agree I think its fairly obvious that he is now on the downward slope of his time on breakfast. Yes he may well still be there this time in 2011 but I doubt he'll be there much after that. When he does finish breakfast I would say he'll be out the door faster than most ex breakfast presenters were, as I cant see where he would fit in.

I can't help thinking he's at the same point in his career as DLT was in 1990ish

I think, if anything, it's the type of audience he's garnering that is cause for concern - those who listened to him 10yrs ago on afternoons who have grown-up with him etc. It's a similar situation to circa '93 when Radio 1 did 19 million punters a week, of course - the average age of a R1 listener back then was 35.

As for the new presenters - it's obviously a case of the critics being more mature than the presenters

He's tried TV, it doesn't seem to suit him

Jo Whiley used to present 'The Saturday Social' on Radio 1, Saturday afternoons. She's now back on her old Saturday slot!

Moyles is BBC through and through these days. They don't shoot their own.

Expect a stage managed departure to weekend mid-mornings.

He's just recorded his second series of his quiz show for Channel 4, to go out on Friday nights next year, so they must be reasonably happy with how he is on TV.

I agree with this - I think he'll also end up doing stand-in stuff for Radio 2 (for Wright and Mayo although I would like to see him have a crack at standing in for Vine as well) at the same time with a full time move after a couple of years.

I believe Chris Moyles will eventually replace Steve Wright on Radio 2.

Each to their own, but he's not a very good TV presenter at all and looks a bit awkward in front the camera.

A few years ago I would have agreed with you, but these days I think he looks perfectly comfortable on TV.

I do like when the tabloids write these stories about Moyles as you just know that he will rip it apart on the next show

"FAT Motormouth Shock Jock Chris Moyles caused great offence this morning after he offended a minority group. The Roly Poly DJ is not having a good year after losing millions of listeners. A Radio 1 insider said that Moyles will be axed at some point in the future..." etc etc

Yes.

I expect that'll happen the same week that Louise Botting stands in for Westwood.

OK, maybe it was a random suggestion but I think from the serious bits I've heard him do I think he could adapt to it.
