Speeding - Acceptable on motorways?

What is wrong with doing 70mph on british motorways? Seems everybody gets uppity at you for daring to stray into their 'overtaking' lane whilst adhering to the national speed limit. Flashinig lights and gesticulating because you're not breaking the law, crazy!

Anybody feel inclined to stay in such a lane if the driver behind is so upset at you not breaking the law?

Not really. I'd rather move over if he was sat inches from my bumper. They're idiots, but I wouldn't risk a high speed crash to prove a point.

Don't do sit there at 70 in the "overtaking" lane if you're not overtaking then simples

But what if i move out of the way, and they kill a young family a few miles down the road because of their pathetic need to break the law?

I don't understand some peoples feeling that they have a 'right' to hound you out of their way on the roads, just because you aren't breaking the law and they want to

I think the concept of an 'overtaking lane' harks back to the days when there were less self-righteous people to complain if said overtake meant going up to 75 or 80 mph.

Nowadays the authorities use a very dumbed down zero-tolerance, zero common sense approach which has rubbed off on some motorists

Ever overtaken a high-sided HGV during a gale? I can assure you that i'll risk the fine and points rather than risk that falling on me. I'm out of the way as quickly as the laws of physics will allow

I'd walk faster than 70 on a motorway. Get out of my way!

Of course, because tailgating and flashing your lights at the driver in front after tearing up behind them doing 90mph is 'overtaking'

Being on the motorway isn't supposed to be a game, you don't have to overtake anybody who dares to be ahead of you on the road

So it isn't a game, yet you advocate blocking and therefore annoying those who tailgate you?

I'm missing something here

That would pretty much give the green light to those who wish to constantly do 10mph above the speed limit then, as there is always going to be someone in front of you on the motorway.

So was I. Ex police instructor, bloody good driver too.

Unfotunately the less hard of thinking among us can't suddenly see something that was previously consdidered benign as sickeningly dangerous, just because to do so fits the authorities agenda.

Yes, but that view of speed limits is a very recent idea. Before people used to use common sense, especially on a motorway. You may be right, they may be wrong but the majority of motorway users do exceed the 70 limit and I don't see that changing any time soon.

70 mph on a good bit of motorway in a modern well maintained car seems painfully slow IMO.

You're not supposed to hog the overtaking lanes.

Learn to drive!

I think this is a spoof thread.

If its really about road bullying when your within the law, the thread will just deviate to people defending themselves breaking the law.

Nobody seems to own up to being a bully though. At least someone have the guts to say they get annoyed by people in front of them doing the speed limit.

Young family - Why the emotive prose?
Why not an elderly couple or a comercial traveller or anyone else going about their business.

To my way of thinking, your attitude would be more likely to bring about an accident by encouraging undertaking - a far more dangerous practice.

I have the guts to say that someone driving at their inaccurate speedo's version of 70 in the outside lane and refusing to move into a clear inner lane would cause me to flash, hoot, and ultimately overtake them in the middle lane. They are most likely doing 64mph. I have a GPS speedo in both car and bike, and at steady motorway speed, it's accurate. I reserve the right to drive at the speed limit on a suitable road/conditions.

My instuctor stuck his foot under the brake pedal duel controls to prevent me from stopping. A pedestrian walked out in front of the car, the instructor wanted to scare him, teach him a lesson.

I doubt that reason will help me in court if anything happens, and nor will yours.

It's the people doing 90 who are the crap drivers.

They don't have the quick reactions and responses needed to drive at that speed, they don't look ahead, fail to read the traffic situation, don't de-accelerate in sufficient time to keep a safe distance with the subsequent result that they are up your exhaust 2 foot from your rear bumper gesticulating wildly to the innocent driver in front.
Good drivers wouldn't find themselves in that situation.

Anyone idiot can drive fast on an empty road, give these plonkers a complex traffic situation and their limitations become obvious.
