Simon's choice of 'Your Song'

I find it really odd that Simon picked 'Your Song' for Danyl. Olly performed it at bootcamp and Simon slated him for picking a 'safe' option:

(personally I think Olly does a better job of singing his own version without murdering it, but hey)

So why did Simon then go on to give his own act 'Your Song' if its so safe and Danyl is so good? Hmm....

Because Simon's pretty useless at picking decent songs.

And to be fair, Danyl completely changed the melody, so it wasn't so safe.

Preferred Olly's though.

Nothing odd about it at all.

Simon says what suits his agenda at the moment. Hypocrisy isn't a problem for him!

It's very true, I know Simon has no problem with changing his mind/opinion. It's just... how are the contestants supposed to do well? If they sing a song closer to the original its safe/karaoke, and if they do something different they've ruined the song.

Generally, if you sing the song like the original but you do it extremely well, you'll be praised (Leona - I Will Always Love You or Alexandra - Listen). The karaoke thing is only brought up if it's an average vocal on an average song.

Danyl did something different with the song (presumably because Cowell didn't want it to be safe) and wasn't told that he ruined the song. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It all depends on how you sing it and the arrangement you choose.

I've just watched Your Song again.

It's an unusual take, and Danyl has an unusual voice, and I thought it was very, very good indeed.

It wasn't safe in the fact it started and ended as the Moulin Rouge Version but the bit in between was the original. He made it his own unlike the others last night.
