Sky (pub) prices soar

All I can say is, how the **** can they get away with a 40% increase?

Pubs slam jump in fee

By Robert Mcaulay

FOOTBALL fans could miss out on games after Sky announced
huge increases to show live matches in pubs.

The TV giants have caused outrage among licensees by hiking
annual subscription charges by 18 per cent.

It comes on top of last year's fee increases which saw pubs hit
with rises of up to 22percent.

And it means bars could soon be paying up to £600 a month
to show live games.

The shock rise comes as pub owners also face forking out for the
new Setanta SPL TV package on top of their Sky subscription.

Sky own the rights to show Champions League games and their
satellite equipment is used to receive Setanta Sports.

Celtic have already qualified for the money-spinning group stages
and Rangers could join them.

Angry publicans say they can't afford the hike, which does not
include pay-per-view matches, and plan to boycott the channel.

Daniel Martin, 45, owner of Heraghty's bar in Glasgow, said:
'We are already paying £500 for our Sky package and this
increase would take our subscription to £600. Sky are more
or less holding us to ransom.'

A spokesman for the Scottish Licensed Trade Association said
Sky refused to negotiate.

But a Sky spokesman said: 'Our package has been greatly enhanced,
offering licensees more matches and coverage.'

hmm, all they are interested is in meeting there objectives of high revenue per sub. i guess rupert and the boys will never be satisfied.

whats to stop a pub getting a european sat system, subscribing to cancel+ or another provider and getting a comercial sports package?
that would be adequet revenge on sky

These pubs seem to forget that the number of matches they will be screening this football season will be up by 33% over the whole year. , they seem to want something for nothing.

For instance that Scottish owner has seen the cost go up by £100 , but per game it now works out more cheaply for him , plus as he is screening more games he will get more custom for each game as there are more games being shown and so his drinks/food sales will go up making him more money which will more than cover the £100 increase.

Getting a sub to a european commerical operator is far more expensive these days not to mention against the law in this country, the FA take it seriously against pubs who don't show games via Sky and show 3pm games ,and anyway look how much it would cost you or me to get a legit sub to premiere in Germany !

I can't see exactly what the FA can do against a pub that shows a match that's on another service FTA? Maybe they have some arguement about a sub to another operator (not for public exhibition in the contract perhaps?) but FTA?

FTA - hah , no one shows them FTA , it's very rare , the FA require broadcasters to encrypt there games (the BBC couldn't bid for the recent prem games as they broadcast FTA) , a turkish broadcaster was forced to provide alternate programming on one of its spot beams becasue it was orignally being picked up in the UK.

This thread is pointless anyway , bar owners say costs are going up , but they are forgetting to mention the fact that as they will be showing more games trade and revenue into their pockets will go up as well.

It's classic blame the supplier , but don't menton the fact we the pub owners will make more money anyway.

Like normal it'll be the public who bears the brunt. i.e drinks will probably go up.

£600 a month seems alot but probably pales into insignificance for the amount of extra business it brings in for them but it's up to them to decide if they'll be better off from cancelling Sky, somehow I doubt it.

I must admit I was very surprised when a figure of 360ukp per month was recently mentioned in another thread, but 500 or 600ukp is simply outrageous.

Mind you I'll be the first to admit that the prices some places charge for drinks these days is quite shocking.

If there's one thing that puts me off a pub it's having a telly blairing away (Orwell was complaining about radios in pubs back in the 1930s). If you want to watch telly, stay at home. Otherwise you might as well take the wife and kids down the pub with you, along with the washing up and an ironing board so you feel really at home.
