See Here:-http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3958855.stm WRN, the UK-based international transmission and broadcast specialist, has announced the launch of its latest innovation for radio stations wanting to get onto Sky. WRN’s On Air is described as the UK's first fully serviced radio channel on the Sky digital platform. The channel has been designed for stations wanting quick access to Sky digital but only for a limited period of time. This includes those stations already on the Sky grid but who want to be on the platform earlier than their official launch date. WRN’s On Air channel is also the perfect place for large UK radio groups to test new formats or incubate a station. Smaller regional radio groups who see Sky as an essential broadcast platform but do not want to commit to a one-year agreement. Or production companies who are producing and distributing stations for brand-owners. Even RSLs covering large sporting events can book space for the duration of their broadcast and instantly be available in over 7.4 million homes. WRN’s On Air channel goes live on November 15th 2004. More information about On Air can be obtained from WRN’s sales team on +44 (20) 7896 4020 or sales@wrn.org (From Media Network Weblog.) Consumer groups lobbied the government to ensure that people with low incomes or disabilities will not be left out in the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting, set for 2012. In a report, the Consumer Experts Group, an alliance of consumer-advocate bodies, warned that most people are still against the idea of the switch-off and that the government would miss its target date if financial support is not available for the elderly and low-income households. ( From TeleSatellite) Sony Pictures and the Walt Disney Co. are planning to launch the UK’s first studio-backed video-on-demand service in a bid to erode Sky's control over the UK pay-TV market. The two studios said they plan to launch a cable-only VOD service in partnership with Management Company On Demand Management, which already operates pay-per-view services for biggest cable operators, NTL the U.K.’s and Telewest. Sony Pictures, Disney and the On Demand group filed an application October 4 for permission to launch the service with the European Commission's competition division and expect a preliminary decision as early as November 11. ( From TeleSatellite) ITV took a step closer to slashing its £450 million licence payments burden 13 after Ofcom published proposals that could reduce annual broadcasting fees. The UK's largest commercial terrestrial broadcaster has long argued for a reduction in the public service programming quotas that form a large constituent of its analogue broadcasting licences. Ofcom, the media regulator, acknowledged ITV's case last month when it proposed the gradual phasing out of non-news regional programming. However, ITV has also called for Ofcom to recognise the cost of broadcasting 104 hours of religious programming and 520 hours of TV shows per year in terms of lost advertising revenue. The regulator confirmed it will take into account the money lost from screening such programmes when it calculates the cost of ITV licences, which are due for renewal at the end of the year. ( From TeleSatellite) As part of a strategy to create a network of international lifestyle channels, the Discovery Home & Leisure is set for a name change and a redefinition of its demographic focus towards the end of 2005. The channel will be rebranded Discovery Real Time to bring it in line with its sister networks, currently rolling out worldwide. Real Time will be aimed at men age 25-45, featuring practical programming for men, centering on men's channel regulars like motors, workshop activities, gadgets, fitness and grooming. The channel is one of three lifestyle channels currently being rolled out in markets from India to Europe, besides Discovery Travel & Living and Discovery Home & Health. Channel 664 JML Home shopping specialist is to launch a joint shopping channel with Kleeneze investing £4 million over a two year period to launch the new service which will be available on Sky channel 664. The channel, will be renamed Eezee TV, will initially launch with pre-recorded product commercials until March 2005. The channel will then relaunch with 16 hours of live and 8 hours of pre-recorded programming each day, giving a 24 hour service. (From Digital Spy) Ofcom proposes a BBC TV rival. Media regulators have unveiled a proposition to create a new publicly funded, non-traditional digital television channel that would develop programming to suit evolving new technology. (From Reuters) Rapture TV is to return to UK screens in the new year. Complete with new programmes. This will be in addition to the R-Muzik strand. Further details will be announced soon. (From :- http://news.rapturetv.com ) TalkSPORT is planning to launch a national TV service on Sky Digital. TalkSPORT, the national AM station owned by the Wireless Group, said it was in talks with BSkyB to launch a TV channel by the end of next month. The Wireless Group, said TalkSPORT TV will broadcast in a daily on Channel 235 with a six-hour slot initially, but hopes to launch a 24-hour service in the New Year. (From Telesatellite) The BBC is poised to move entire television and radio channels out of London and up to the North in what it promises will be the biggest relocation in its history. Manchester and Glasgow are the favourites to become home to the relocated stations, a senior BBC source said. The BBC has already promised to move a main channel to Manchester while its Glasgow operation produces nearly 20 per cent of the children's programmes. Although the BBC is only halfway through its review, insiders say the main contenders to be relocated are Radio 1, the youth channel BBC3, BBC Sports and children's television. News that Al-Jazeera intends to launch a new English language news channel by the end of next year, is now being reported by Reuters News UK. BSkyB wants Doordarshan to join its platform by November this year but Broadcasting Secretary of India, Navin B Chawla would like to delay it by another 2-3 months so that they get more time in preparing the programming for it Dave Atherton, the entrepreneur behind the online retailer dabs.com , is planning to launch Technology TV in October. The backers are hoping that the educational and entertainment value of the technology-themed programmes will keep viewers coming back, whilst the interactive shopping will generate the station's revenue From:-(Telesatellite) Channel 4 has also extended its conditional access deal with Sky until October 2008. Channel 4 is getting into Radio along with UBC Media, who currently own the Oneword digital station, which broadcasts on Sky, Freeview, and on cable. More4 Which is to be headed up by C-4’s Documentaries Chief, with a budget of between £10million & £20million, will likely focus on dramas and documentaries, with the latter aimed squarely at the over-30s who are already fans of lifestyle shows. Freeview carriage is on the cards plus a deal with Sky that will ensure its presence on the satellite platform until at least 2007, along with C4's existing digital services E4 and FilmFour. The people behind Reality TV will be launching Reality Life + 2 new channel this year. Details: http://www.zonevision.co.uk/newsroo...l.php?pr=040322 Channel East is set to relaunch and make a return to Sky Digital later this year. News channel Aaj Tak plans to launch this year.(From; Media Bullet –Wotsat) VC; The company behind the two channels, ( Amore & Horror Channel) is planning to launch at least one other new network, no further.details about the third service are known. Although there are strong technical arguments in favour of progressive scanning for emission, the EBU Technical Committee recognises that some broadcasters might wish to broadcast 1080i-programme material. As consumer electronics equipment (e.g. set-top boxes and displays) will accept both 720p and 1080i formats, broadcasters will be able to select either of these formats * even on a programme-by-programme basis. Taking into account that production and emission standards do not need to be identical, further EBU studies on Production standards for HDTV in Europe are in progress. This work is not intended to result in a recommendation for a single standard for HDTV production. ( From TeleSatellite) Pace has announced plans to make high definition compatible set-top boxes available to satellite and cable operators across Europe. The DS840 digital satellite box will launch in December. It offers an embedded Irdeto conditional access system to allow viewers to subscribe to the services of Euro1080, the HD channel launched earlier this year. ( From Wotsat & D.S. Details:- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds15751.html ) Platinum Update: The Platinum Channel is the name for the HDTV channel and will feature the programming previously discussed on Digital Spy. (Another LWT exclusive) See Here:- http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board...ad.php?t=159632 When SKY launches its HDTV service it will aim to have 7 HDTV Channels broadcasting in total. Read that part Ive highlighted carefully - it will work with HD1, but wont work with the forthcoming Sky HD channels which will presumably use videoguard.... |

ITV going fta when its encryption deal runs out later this month?? This from Media Bullet
08/11/04 ITV considering following BBC's FTA plans ITV is considering following the BBC's Free To Air plans according to latest reports. The move will mean the network saving up to £17m a year to spend on other things. The current deal allows ITV to broadcast each of its regions on the Sky EPG as well as its three channel being broadcast in the UK only, i.e. Free To View for Sky subscribers only. |

Not exactly "news" is it?
I mean ITV did say at the time the BBC went FTA that they would indeed watch the situation and make a decision at the appropriate time (IE when *their* contract came around for renewal) ... |

Anyone else noticed that the four Vectone channels are now on 11.642 V. Why are they moving channels around to different transponders? Is it to make space for new channels launching?

The only decent thing about that channel is that Ashley Mulheron bird. They should move her to another Sky channels for more exposure. Hopefully we can then read about her hidden talents just like fellow country lass Kirsty Gallacher. Time for Sky Scottish Live XXX methinks! |
