Why the Ian/Sally affair isn't working!

A good affair can light up the Street. This one is a damp squib. Why though? Ian's a good enough looking man, who believe it or not is only 48, but where's the excitement? The edge? The danger? He doesn't come over as a ruthless, power-crazy dynamic female preditor. Instead we get this ridiculous "I love you Sally". He's so subservient and accommodating it's cringe-making.

Or maybe it's Sally that's making this hard to watch? Over the past couple of years, her character has had a personality by-pass. The first time around, she was the wronged wife and wanted to prove she was still sexy at the time of her flings with Greg and then Alex the decorator, but more recently she's become the frumpy, obsessed mum, sporting comfy anoraks and being pushy and obnoxious. I suppose there's some risk, but then why wasn't I hiding behind my hands when Kevin was on his way up the steps to Davenport's office! The things is we've already been through all this before with Sally - our seasoned adultress, we no longer care.

I just can't buy the fact that Ian sees this sexy babe! The trouble is we don't! Sally is attractive and CAN be sexy, but in this case Corrie can't have it both ways. They love building up a character so as to be believeable. But with Sally they've changed her too many times, she is not credible. Just because she's suddenly wearing a black suit from Primark and brings Kevin a custard slice in a sports car, doesn't change her fundamental personality.

Couldn't you have given a simpler reason...I'm finding it hard to get the point of your post - it's just too long.

I read the original post and all it mentioned was Corrie!
try to stick on the point of topic! - it really isn't that difficult... (I'd have a bet with you on it, but I know I'd win!!! )

I think its not working because Sally has had so many affairs already, its just going to have the same outcome, we know Sally & Kevin will stay together, so what's the point? She was fine how they had turned her into, a really funny character.

The storyline seems quite forced to me aswell, but what other storyline could Sally have had? I can only imagine her having affairs.

People are saying the story with Sally is boring because she has had so many affairs. But people seem to love the DEn story regardless of the fact he has also had many women. So I'm just pointing out some facts.

It's actually less credible for Den to have women than Sally have the men as Den is a wrinkled old prune.

I actually thought they'd go down the prostitution route with her, with Ian forcing her to sleep with him so that she would keep her job!

I didn't think this storyline was working, although it had the potential. I just brought it up for discussion, for anyone interested. Clearly you're not and that's fair enough. There doesn't *have* to be a point, like most Corrie fans here, I just enjoy talking about and analysing storylines. That's part of the fun.

The reason why the storyline isn't really working for me is cos of the lack of chemistry- Ian and Sally don't really seem to have any

I love the pushy mum Sally so wish they had stuck to that rather than creating another affair for her although I suppose they needed something as a catalyst for Tommy thinking Sally is having an affair with Martin, therefore leading to the Harrises exit

It's just I hate reading really long posts that's all. It's easier to understand the point you are making when they are shorter.

ahhhh okay, I didn't know that. So they have had to force things a little unnaturally then. Thanks Laura.

No problem I personally think they could have thought of something else rather than the Sally/Ian affair though. I don't know what, but I'm sure they could have thought of something a bit better!!!!

I think what it could have done with to make it more exciting was if Ian was a really nasty piece of work and blackmailing her. Saying "See that holiday you want to take your kids on and all the work I'm putting Kevin's way? There's only one way that will continue". That might not work though as I think she would probably just tell Kevin who would gladly tell Ian where to stick his work. So what they've got instead is Sally wanting more in life than the run of the mill and here's a guy who can offer her more and a bit of excitement. It is very believable in that sense I guess, but the storyline coming up about Tommy/Sally/Martin is really needed to add something to it.

To be fair, this isn't the same as Sally's other affairs; she's doing this one just for the money...

I think the outcome will be more interesting this time seeing as the children are older and we actually be involved in the storyline.

I think subtlety of it makes it more menacing somehow, although if i think about it in that sense it's a bit close to charlie/shelley. I think the way he has manipulated her is realistic when you consider her character, she rose up and stood against his attempts at out and out blackmail (stating plainly that the job is only there if she sleeps with him) but when he started finding her weaknesses and vanity and appealing to those, he had success. Scary really that he can be that manipulative
