HiDef TV – HDTV SECTION

Sony has revealed that their 2004 range of "HD Capable" large screen LCD and plasma TV displays - which feature analogue component inputs instead of the "HD Ready" HDMI/HDCP inputs - will be able to be used with Sky's high definition television service when it launches. Press release::- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds19787.html

British Sky Broadcasting has appointed Thomson as the initial manufacturer of the set-top box for its forthcoming High Definition Televisionservice and confirmed that it is on track to launch in 2006. Speaking at the DVB World conference in Dublin, BSkyB's Chief Operating Officer, Richard Freudenstein, revealed that Sky's HDTV box would feature a similar Personal Video Recorder capability to the existing Sky+ box. Freudenstein said that offering PVR capability as a standard in the HDTV arena will ensure that Sky+'s 6000,000 subscribers would continue to enjoy control and flexibility in association with the highest-quality programming. Watch FTA HiDefTV albeit in German,German TV company ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion and satellite provider SES Astra have announced that they will offer free-to-air High-Definition-Television (HDTV) simulcasts of ProSieben (PRO7) blockbuster movies. The first highlight was on March 13th 2005 with "Spider Man", one of the most successful movies ever made. In parallel to the Free-TV premiere in conventional standard definition, this fast, action-packed cinema version of the Marvel Comic classic was receivable in superior high-definition picture quality via ASTRA 1F.
At 10 pm on Saturday, March 26th, viewers can then enjoy the premiere of David Fincher's "Panic Room". This sinister thriller will again be broadcast in high-definition. Last but not least "Der Anschlag", "Men in Black II" and the successful BBC documentary "Supervolcano", three further ProSieben highlights, will be aired in HD in April 2005 via ASTRA Transponder No. 16 (11.4355 GHz; vertical polarization). The visual experience will be completed by Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, providing viewers with true cinema quality in the living room. Technically speaking, the blockbusters and programme highlights will be simulcast in parallel to the regular SD signal, the movies being played out HDCAM SR (1080i/50 Hz) and delivered to an MPEG-2 HD encoder with a data rate of some 1.4 gigabits/s. The Digital Playout Center (DPC), based in Unterföhring, Germany, is responsible for the re-multiplexing, the modulation and uplink of the HD signal and ensures that the signal is DVB-conform. The symbol rate is 22MS/s QPSK.
Wolfgang Elsässer, Managing Director of SES Astra in Germany: "HDTV has been gaining momentum in Germany and simulcasts like these in cooperation with a leading Free-TV operator like ProSiebenSat1 stimulate consumer interest and market demand. HD will provide an additional incentive to go digital. According to a recent study by Euroconsult, some 14 million households in Germany will have HDTV-ready displays by 2010."

 The European Information & Communications Technology Industry Association has announced a standard for HD Ready labeling of TVs, plasma screens and other HD displays. "The “HD ready” label is fully supported by Europe’s national broadcasters. More info :- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18570.html

Sony, has forecast that 20m European households will have high definition TV (HDTV) sets by 2008. HDTV set prices – currently at £2,000 – would continue to fall, making them more of an attractive proposition to the mass consumer market. “Once you show HDTV people are hooked, says Chris Deering, Sony’s European CEO. (From Digital TV Group)

 European HDTV pioneer Euro1080 is to launch a second service, HD-2, in June 2005, with the emphasis on pay-per-event. Gabriel Fehervari, General Manager of Euro1080 also revealed that the operator would be using MPEG-4 encoding from that time. In addition to Euro1080’s involvement with SES-Astra, Fehervari confirmed that he had secured distribution deals on alternative satellites such as Sirius, Hellas Sat and Turksat, as well as some 20 cable networks. (From Advanced Television.com & Colin Mann in London)

Toshiba has won a major victory in the battle to determine the standard for next-generation DVD’s with the endorsement by four Hollywood studios of its High Definition-DVD format. Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers their supported the HD-DVD format advocated by Toshiba and NEC. Universal Pictures said it would come out with titles in the format during the 2005 holiday season while Paramount committed to bringing content out on HD-DVD in 2006. The support of the Hollywood studios gives a strong boost to the Toshiba camp, which is competing with a group led by Sony to standardise the next generation of optical recording technology. Sony is leading a group of consumer electronics and PC manufacturers promoting the rival Blu-ray Disc format.

 The EBU Technical Committee has recommended that Emission standards for HDTV should be based on progressive scanning: 720p/50 is currently the optimum solution, but 1080p/50 is an attractive option for the longer term. Although there are strong technical arguments in favour of progressive scanning for emission, the EBU Technical Committee recognises that some broadcasters might wish to broadcast 1080I-programme material. As consumer electronics equipment (e.g. set-top boxes and displays) will accept both 720p and 1080I formats, broadcasters will be able to select either of these formats * even on a programme-by-programme basis. Taking into account that production and emission standards do not need to be identical, further EBU studies on Production standards for HDTV in Europe are in progress. This work is not intended to result in a recommendation for a single standard for HDTV production. ( From TeleSatellite)

Pace has announced plans to make high definition compatible set-top boxes available to satellite and cable operators across Europe. The DS840 digital satellite box offers an embedded Irdeto conditional access system to allow viewers to subscribe to the services of Euro1080, the HD channel launched in 2004. ( From Wotsat & D.S. Details:- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds15751.html )

 When SKY launches its HDTV service it aims to have 7 HDTV Channels broadcasting in total. (Thanks Andyk22k)

The BBC's new interactive TV service has undergone a revamp on Telewest's digital cable service. Screenshots available Here:- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/screen.p...=1&type=bbci05

 SMS text messages can now be sent and received using a Telewest landline. Sending a message over the Telewest network will cost 10p (7p if the subscriber is on the Talk Mobile package) and will require the subscriber to have the Caller Display feature on their phone line, in addition to having a text-enabled phone. Incoming texts are free - and for those with a standard phone, it will be read out by an automated voice instead of being displayed on a text-enabled phone's screen.

 European news channel EuroNews is allowing viewers watching through Telewest Broadband cable in the UK to choose which language they receive the broadcast via interactive TV. (From C21Media)

Is 333 actually showing anything? Or is it just a movie in the early hours like TWC Reloaded was showing on 428?

And - do we really need another Life TV channel?! Surely it's not a +2 hour service?

Also - as Digi Man said elsewhere, good to see Fashion TV back in the listings - I'm sure they'll get slot 220 back

For reference Setanta Sports Ireland, which was briefly available unencrypted via the other channels route on 11.222 H,seems to have moved. I was getting a technical fault message on it and when I did an add channels on that frequency again it was no longer in the list that came up.

Yes, "51019" is definetly for INSP as the EPG data matches the TV Schedules on the INSP website.

Ive also noticed that Discovery Home & Leisure has started to advertise a programming strand called 'Real Time'. I wonder if this is the first step of the rebrand of Home & Leisure to Discovery Real Time?
