Another classic butchered?

Couldn't help but notice another 'rapper' had taken a classic song done by some 80s pop act Spandau Ballet and butchered it by rapping over it.

I hope this is not another one of these 'genres' we've been having recently, like the dance songs where they take a sample from some obscure 80s track and loop it over and over again to a dancey beat (a. la Uniting Nations and Eric Prydz).

Clip here.

G4 covered Bohemian Rhaposody? Twista 'rapped' over Bill Withers' Lovely Day?

Is nothing sacred any more?

lol, that is a truly awful concoction..... I suppose it's the same old thing....it's OK if they work (but usually they don't).

Did anyone else see G4 on CD:UK at the weekend singing "I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo...." with a smirk on their face in front of a bunch of 13 year old girls?.....the whole world's gone mad hasn't it? .

This is horrific... but if it's a trend it's not a new one - many artists, especially rap and R&B, have been 'borrowing' looped sequences as backing for as long as I can remember. Which isn't that long, really. Oasis's 'Hello' is a fine non-'urban' example.

Few are as bad as this, though (the rapper in question seems to have omitted to have any words in the chorus, quite a major failing).

ANNOYING!

People are going to buy it because it'll be 'cool' and 'ghetto'. SHUT UP!

The world has gone mad! It's mental, but what can we do? Lets plan to kill Simon Cowell (I blame him for ANY bad music )

I don't think you can blame SC for rap and RnB.

That G4 thing has irked me since they were doing this on X-Factor. Trilling out songs like Creep, with absolutely no context or emotion is embarassing. They go on about how they are classically trained opera singers, so let me think, what kind of music would suit them?

And Ste.

As it's the 25th anniversary of the death of Ian Curtis I would quite like to hear G4 record a Joy Division tribute album, that'd be really good....

I don't know, proper rap can be. The only difference is eople speak instead of sing, and if it's done well, then it can be brilliant. It's just what we hear on the radio isn't proper rap. It's diluted, shameful, and commercial nonsense. I hate to say it, but the only decent rapper at the moment (IMO) is Eminem - he's more like rap was. Think NWA, Cypress Hill, Run DMC (before Jason Nevins )

Eminem is bearable (usually) but I much prefer rappers like Roots Manuva and Saul Williams.....of course they won't be that successful because they aim for adults rather than teenagers......

That song is so awful, I think I could cry. Since I'm in the mood to rant, here's what I hate about the majority of hip-hop:

[1] Dodgy sampling (i.e. Akon - Lonely), or sampling of classic tracks which just doesn't work, as witnessed here.

[2] The whole 'bling' thing. It doesn't determine how cool you are, rather it just highlights how you're in it for the money.

[3] A lot of rappers come across as being completely obnoxious, egocentric and pompous characters. Most of the time there's little or no real talent to agree with such over-confidence.

[4] General laziness. Laziness when it comes to production - songs clearly stealing from others (like Ciara's Goodies steals elements of Usher's Yeah), and loops which sound like they could have been made in a few minutes - then laziness when it comes to the rapping, i.e. 50 Cent. Put some effort into it, man!

But each to their own, as they say, so don't be offended if you actually like commercial hip-hop. You're just listening to one of the lowest forms of music there is!

Its not even like its original for a rapper to use the riff from 'true' either.

Back in 1991 PM Dawn had a top 3 hit with Set Adrift On Memory Bliss with him rapping over the riff. It was actually a damn sight better that this recent rubbish too.

Bravo... Two excellent, adult rappers.
Not kiddy pop pap rappers like The Game, 50 Cent, Eminem et al.

He can't rap. He's another Shaggy as far as I'm concerned.

Thats "street".
Actually, its just ego getting in the way.... All bands end up doing it unless they're is a scraping of human in them.

50 Cent is a mumbling ****wit, with no talent.
Ciara's Goodies was produced by the same people as Usher's Yeah... but it still shows complete and utter lazy contempt for people.. Then again, the people buy it in their droves, so it shows what contempt they have for themselves.

weird thing is that the same song had been sampled before by pm dawn- set adrift on memory bliss. so this rap guy is hardly original with his sample...

In the car the other day I heard a dance version of Song to The Siren by This Mortal Coil.

I wept.

You may have something there, They may actually be on par with Curtis (RIP) as his output in life was somewhat tone deaf . But then they may also work better than 50 Cent on a wap twack or two.

I'm telling you people, th eonly decent rapper is Sage Francis, although I hate the medium, at least he has something interesting to say that isn't clouded with misogyny, bitches and hoes, or absolute rubbish about how much you hate your wife and mother.
