sky + box in Paris
Hi ,
I'm in Paris .My friend from Luton just cancelled our Sky account out of the blue and my viewing card in my regular box is unauthorised now.I have just swapped it for a Sky + box I bought in Dixons last summer. It's working fine .The s ignal strengths are good on both inputs and thepicture quality is fine on the BBC channels and ITV3. I have ordered a new card using a friend's address in Chemsford. When she sends it over , should I phone Sky customer servcies to have the new card paired off with the Sky + box or should I ask my f riend to do it ? Of course, I can't plug it in the phone socket and it will be a brand new contract in my name , this time . Shall I just use the regular Panasonic box that had been working just fine for years before t he account was cancelled.I suspect my ex - friend rang Sky to tell them I was watching in Paris. Thanks for any advice , especially if you're using Sky + abroad |

I'm having to make some assumptions before replying, so if I'm wrong, tell me.
Firstly, I'm assuming that your Sky Plus box isn't subsidised in any way - that you paid the full price for it (not having visited the UK for some years, I don't know what Dixons sell). I'm also assuming that you have bought what's called a second-hand contract from Sky, where you supply your own box and dish. Both these conditions need to apply before you can avoid the need for connection to the phoneline, although in practice unless you have multiroom it isn't policed much. I'm also assuming that the contracted package will have (at least) the minimum necessary to avoid the £10 per month surcharge. If it hasn't, you can opt to pay it, but it makes life more complicated. Anyway, assuming all is well with the above, when you get your phone Sky from Paris, but make sure your CLI is barred. I know some people say never to phone from abroad, but I've never had a problem. You will phone to get the card activated, and, once it's activated to ask to have the Sky Plus features enabled. You will be asked to do this by getting the box to call back. Make out as if you're doing so, and then say it's failed - the modem on the box is probably faulty (which is common enough for you to be believed). Since you have no phone line requirement, ask if could they do it over the air. Sky will oblige. Don't forget you're paying Sky money, and unless it's thrust in their face that you're breaching the terms of the contract, they're not going to go looking for trouble. I have two Sky + subscriptions and have helped with several others on the Costa Blanca, Spain. |

Thanks bilnot . Isn't there some device that you can hook up to the sky + box ABROAD and that has it dial back to sKY ? do you think it's worth investing in that , in order to feel more at-ease ?
Cheers |

Hi PMartin,
As long as your box isn't subsidised, you don't need it to be hooked up. Assuming that the box is not subsidised and that you've got the correct type of sub: - When the card arrives, put it in the box. - go to the system details: Services - System Details -Write down EVERYTHING - Make sure you have the latest software - If not, force a download (use search on this forum to find out how) - Send it all to your friend (easier by email than by phone...lol) - Give him your payment details -Get him to phone Sky to pair the card. They will ask him for all the details on the System Details screen - If you want to use Sky+, which I strongly recommend, he needs to inform them about it as well. - Leave the box on a Sky channel like Sky One, Sky Sports or something. It can be activated in between 2 minutes and 4 hours. Good luck, gaffer |

In any case, as I and others have said, there's no need for you to connect the box to the phone. The_gaffer has posted explaining one way to do it, with a friend in the UK. I've explained that I have no problem calling from Spain. Either way, no phone connection is needed and even if it worked in France, it's a bit of an overkill to buy a Smartbox just for the one operation. |

Hi PMartin, If you have problems with activating your card you may want to contact my friends at Insat International. They may well be able to assist you with the activation and they probably won't even charge you for this, they are very helpful. Try them on +44 208 886 7155 or email them at info@insatskycards.com. Good luck. B.K |

Hope it worked out OK for you PMartin.
If you do need an agent (which you probably don't), I would advise you to use skycards.net as they are they have a very good reputation on these - and other - forums. Other companies seem to send their staff on here to act as clients praising them... gaffer, who is not pointing fingers PS: Hope my advice in previous post was useful. |

Calling Sky from abroad
Recently set up Sky + and found easiest way to call Sky with all the system details was to use Skype. No problems at all and a week later phoned to activate the fFreeview card I had ordered from Sky, via Skype, for my old box that I had installed for a friend.
If any interest have upgraded my Pace box with the recommended 160Gb hard drive and am a happy chappie! |

Oh Ben, Ben, Ben...or is it Jimmy? (Sorry, old Joke)
What I find interesting is that I do not in any way mention the company you work for. Is it your guilty conscience that's made you post? As you will see in my 700 and odd posts, I do try and help people where I can by providing advice, that I hope, will help them. In your mighty 14 or so posts, you have either advertised your company (or whatever you want to call your affiliation) or insulted me, by finally retreating as you had no longer anything useful to say. I'm sure that Insat are a fine company and I have seen good - and bad - posts about them everywhere. Which brings me to your masterpiece: the post. On forums, that you are quite obviously new to, you will find that it is generally a good idea to post a link to the topic that you are referring to. You don't just copy a message from a thread without putting in some kind of quotation marks. I "think" that the fact Skycards may have not replied is that - well -, it was December 30th. They might have been on holiday and all that. I do agree that they should have responded earlier and am not finding excuses, but, a lot of companies, big and small have problems with customer service...sometimes. What really makes me laugh about all this is that you have not yet worked out that you are probably doing Insat more harm than good by coming on here throwing accusations around. They probably don't deserve it and Mr Rustem (the owner) might not be too happy. What really makes me laugh is that a certain "Jimmy" is posting on their forum with quotes like "We have large stocks": Website: http://www.skycards.100megs32.com/fo...wtopic.php?t=8 A coincidence, I think not... Have a nice day,...I am. gaffer PS: Please make it your personal duty to surf the net for bad posts. I like being entertained by your comments. |

Hey pea brain, read the above carefully. You took the mans money in November what the hell does December 30th have to do with this. You have the brain power of a lawn mower. B.K |

Dear Ben,
Again, my post has fallen on death ears and you still have not posted the quote properly...<sigh> I didn't take the man's money in November, as I don't have anything to do with Skycards.net , I just use their service! If I was skycards, why would I not post as them, like cabletec does...and as you should do instead of masquerading behind multiple usernames (Hi Jimmy). As I said, all companies have customers that aren't satisfied...you've probably got a lot at Insat. Considering that your insults seem to come out of the "Beano", I won't continue as your understanding of English can't be that good. I also note that the someone posted on the thread you posted as a "happy skycards customer".... but I suppose that that must be one of my posts as another "customer". Enjoying taking the p**s, gaffer |

Gaffer (Damien) Your english and the words you choose to express yourself is excellent. For me to understand you a bit better you could write in Polish, Greek, German or Turkish which i would have better undestanding of as English is not my 1st language. But most important thing that applies to all languages and all the people of the world is common decency, honesty and fair play. On these subject though you score nil point. Have a nice evening, sleep well my boy. Yes that is all you are a boy. When you become a man I will start taking your comments a bit more seriously. |

I don't know why you keep calling me Damian, as it is quite obvious that that isn't my name. If you took the time to read my other posts, you will see that I'm in no way capable of setting up/running a sky card company..as I simply don't have the knowledge, experience or savoir faire (that's French, thought I'd specify as it didn't seem to be in your extensive list of pointless languages). A random pick is: - Which agent should I pick (would I do this if I ran skycards?) - Where can I buy a box (Would I do this if I sold them?) - Basic technical questions concerning best dishes and cable (again, if I ran a sat shop in Ireland, why would I post this?) Honesty, my friend, is something you should learn as well. It is know obvious to me that M3Jimmy (a.k.a you) pretended to be an Insat client. However, when you go on Insat's forum....a certain Jimmy posts things like "We have large stocks of..." (see link a couple of posts up). What's stranger is your user activity on this forum. It's funny how Jimmy was here...then left...then you came...and you're never posting together... So it really does appear that you're the dishonest one. Haven't you worked out that if you actually did post as yourself, you could offer valuable advice and stuff as a retailer...not as a fake client. Concidering the "little boy" thing, if you really thought that that was going to upset me, you really do have a lot to learn. My age is on my profile, and you're either disturbed that someone half your age is getting the better of you...or that someone a few years older/the same age is. As I said before, I don't have anything against Insat. Prepaing myself for a surprising post from Jimmy... gaffer |

If you do not wish to arrange this on this forum you could email me at the address on my profile. Once we have had this meeting we can then write on the forum again with a report on how the meeting went and set the record straight for all to see. This is a genuine offer and I can assure you you will not be disappointed with my kindness and generosity. I will pay all your expenses as you sound like a sad person with very little to do and probably dont have two pennies to rub together. Hoping to meet you soon. B.K |

Now, that has got to be "Post of the year".
You inviting me to see who you are! ![]() Yet again, your facts aren't straight and the illogical workings of your mind disappoint you. I don't give a damn who you are. I couldn't give a damn about meeting you. What does p**s me off is the stuff that you post. It's basically a collection of promoting your company (nothing wrong with that if it's done honestly) and insulting others. These forums are a place to help others, not to attack. Trust me, I have a lot to do...business to attend to, and so on. If I wanted to, I could pay for a ticket to anywhere. I don't however want to as I don't have time for your stupid games and you obviously have an obsession and don't like people getting the better of you - which has happened in every thread that we have "discussed in". Not only does nobody give a damn about your stories or lies, but I don't either. I mean, I personally appreciate skycards.net's service but would not go to extreme lenghts to support them (as you seem to be doing by offering to pay to see me ?!?) I can't see the point of wanting to prove your point so much as you've only been here 5 minutes and haven't made a single valuable contribution to the forums. Why don't you save your money for some anger management courses or business studies...you obviously don't have good customer relation skills. have a nice day, gaffer PS: This is getting boring now as you keep coming back with the same stories. I'll be the bigger man and offer an olive branch so that your future on these boards isn't completely condemned. We'll agree that Skycards do a good job - as do Insat, I'm sure - but certain factors make me believe that not everything is correct...I will say no more. |
