Atlantic FM in Cornwall

Hey does anyone know what's going on with Atlantic? I thought they may have had a presence at the Royal Cornwall Show this year seeing as they launch soon (ish!!).

I heard they've been recruiting their newsteam from students still on media courses.

Anyone got any info??

You mean they didn't? They've really missed a trick in that case - a massive opportunity to increase awareness of the station.

I know Pirate and BBC Cornwall have given it huge coverage in previous years and I bet this year was no exception.

I think it will be a while before Atlantic launches and I think it will be sometime next year. Be sure, you will hear about it when it goes to air.

Sorry to dredge up a 6 month old thread - but "Atlantic FM" will start broadcasting on 14th February 2006.

105.1MHz in the East
107.0MHz in the Mid and West (and Scilly Isles)

Carrier tests due to commence w/c Mon 16th January (from what I've been told). Audio tests some 5 days after. Test programmes and aircheck 10 days prior to launch.

Like I say, that's what I was told about a month ago.

Interesting - do you know where the transmitters will be located and the ERPs, Simon?

Yep. Using existing NTL sites at Caradon Hill (105.1) and Redruth (107.0). I believe they are using the same power levels as Pirate FM. So, that's 12kW Mixed on Redruth and 4.3kW Mixed on Caradon, with a large skew on Caradon to attenuate the signal going into Devon.

But 8 months before it's going on air what were they going to have to show? That long before transmission they'd just have been a few people in an office, if that. They wouldn't have had a schedule, logo or studios; I doubt they'd have even known what frequencies they were going to be on

Any idea if it's going to be added to Now Cornwall DAB Mux at the same times?

I think space was saved for it on the mux, and part of the licence application wasn't it?

Their licence application says they plan to be on DAB from launch.

From reading their document it seems the format will be like Real Radio. Will there be that much difference between them and Pirate FM in music terms?

Their aim is to be on DAB, but it won't be on there from launch, I believe.

The music format is, from what I can gather, going to be like a hybrid of the old 1992 style Pirate, and the new one, but with a bit more speech.

If that's the case, bring it on! (I personally cannot stand Pirate FM these days.... the 1992 style was miles better - and the jingles then were ace! Ahh... those were the days )

I take your point, but I seem to recall that they'd won the licence several months earlier and was expecting them to launch in the Autumn.

So we reckon Atlantic might not be too far away from how Pirate sounded 1992-96...all I can say is let's hope so! Anyone got any idea who might be on there yet?

It'll be a mistake if it's not on DAB from Launch.

Like I said, from what I klnow it won't be on DAB right away.... maybe something to do with UKRD owning half of the MUX and the fact that they bid for the licence also? I dunno

Si, I don't think the mux's ownership has anything to do with it. If anything, it'll probably be more to do with money than anything else. The Mux is co-owned by UKRD and GCap, and both companies or more specifically, their corporate predeccsors, were involved in the original Cornwall ILR licence battle. UKRD's predeccors won that battle, GCap's lost, and GCap, even then was the bigger entity.

Atlantic FM I think is a disaster waiting to happen. From what I've read about it, it will be difficult to diffeentiate it from the programs on Pirate - so what is the point?

In terms of how things are now, I'd tend to agree, but I think most people assume that Pirate will become more of a youth station (UTV/EMAP Big City/One Network style) while Atlanic will be an original Pirate style station.

It is kinda weird though that OFCOM licenced a station so similar to an existing service though.

As in other areas I think it will settle down as:

Pirate- Contemporary hit station
Atlantic- AC/speech

Atlantic better know what they are doing, I don't hold out much hope.

Pirate do seem to be going for a younger feel, but so has BBC Radio Cornwall with a new package, and alot more new/ pop music.

Where is the gap in the market.

It seems to me the opinions of what Pirate was in 1992-1996 is down to what age you were then and what age you are now. Do you hate it now/ think the taget audience is younger because your older and out of the target audience? Interesting Thought.

Competition
so how will competition benifit the audience? How does it give other age groups any more choice. Where is the logic in this extra 27-35 year old station down here in Cornwall?

If Pirate could fit in a few more dance tracks (1990-today) into their playlist, then they'd be winning a greater share of the young audience in Cornwall.
