Nottinghill Carnival 2005

Having grown up in Notting hill I have seen many a celebration,so much so that the novelty has kinda worn off for me.

In recent years I've stayed away from London for the August bank holiday but am stuck this year so figured if you can't beat 'em,join 'em and will be doing my best to get into the 'carnival spirit' by getting rat-arsed and making a prat of myself probably.

Just wanted to know if anyone else is going or has ever been,if so,what did ya think?did you enjoy it,end up at a party or thoroughly dissapointed?

Any comments please

I actually grew up on Ladbroke Grove (couldn't get any nearer!!) and was there until I was 19 - as a kid I got involved in the kids carnival on Sunday and as a teenager I just partied the whole weekend and I loved it, I used to look forward to it each year, there was such a great community atmosphere. I would love to go to Carnival again as I haven't been for 14yrs now .... wow, didn't realise it had been that long ... age creeps up But I live in the USA now so can hardly pop over for it.

If you're going Lauren - have a great time

Aahh, the Portobello market - used to love sauntering down there on a Saturday picking up some bargains and then staggering through again early hours Sunday morning trying to find my way home

Look forward to hearing how it went

I used to go to Carnival for every year for years but I haven't been in a long time. It's just not as good as it used to be, and what's the betting that it's going to p*ss down with rain tomorrow, as per usual!

Sorry, didn't mean to sound so glum, do carry on!

I'm sure the weather will be great. Love Carnival but can't go this year due to illness... at least it comes round more frequently than Glasto.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is Carnival always refered to as "Carnival" and not "The Carnival"?

well thanks for the responses.Bit of a non starter this thread

Have been on a three day bender so my version of carnival may be slightly blurred.Kids day(Sunday)was pretty crap with very little 'procession' but more people (200,000) than I can ever remember on a Sunday.I was crawling by 10:30,maybe something to do with a glass of wine,or ten! had an early night.

Day 2,started on the beer, stood on Ladbroke Grove. Some really stunning costumes but very little steel pan replaced with sound system floats Alot less people this year which made it easier to move about without some blokes hand stuck to your arse! Not a great report there then but I had fun.

drdaws that is a mystery but aren't you looking forward to 'THE Christmas'?

Glad you had a good time Lauren .... not so many steel pans eh?, thats a shame as I love them and that is the sound of the carnival .... Is your chest still thumping from the sound systems, a strange but satisfying feeling
