Sixth form

I started sixth form yesterday but i totally hate it at the moment. I decided after my first lesson of sociology that I didn't like it, so i've changed to German. I don't particually like German either but it I did enjoy it sometimes and there's only 4 other people in the class and so it should be easier to learn.
There's loads of responsibility. Nearly every teacher has said how hard it's gonna be and how much studying we've got to be doing now. I don't really like my subjects and I'm not with any of my close friends in form time. There are people who I am friends with but they make me feel left out.
Am I just being silly? Is it normal to feel like this??Everyone else seems to be enjoying it but I feel really down and don't want to go back.
People who have previously talked about sixth form have said its loads of fun and they really enjoyed it!Does it get better???

I dont think its unusual to feel like this - it is a big change from regular school so I think its a case of settling in to something different.

Can I ask though, why do you not like any of your subjects? SHouldn't you have picked subjects you enjoyed?

Last year, I was in Year 12, started my new courses and I hated it all- my lessons, my peers, my teachers, the work. Every day i thought i want to change course and that still happens now. Im always thinking about moving college.

Its normal to feel like this, and as you go in, its get easier-but the feelings stays with you. Just dont quit, you will regret it.

During Form time, I have no-one to talk too- I just sit the and listen to what they talking about- and think how lucky I am to not talking to them- and get on with my own things

It is a big change, but im sure you'll get use to it.

As 6th form is a lot of work, its vital that you pick subjects you like in order to do well in your A levels...try and chnage them if you dont enjoy them if you can.

Just try to make as many friends as possible, smile at everyone you can!

It'll be strange at first, but i'm sure you'll setlle in quicker than you think!

good luck

I didn't enjoy 6th form at first, but after a few weeks I loved it! There were no longer the "gangs" we had in year 11, and everyone got on so much better! The lessons got better too - i hated them to begin with, thought they were boring and difficult, but after a while I began to enjoy them too!
I really wish I was back at school now!!

DO you mean as in a school's 6th form, or a like College?! Personally I think College is a lot better, I go to College and love it. Work can be quite hard at times, but its soo much more relaxed at a college than it is at a School;s 6th Form! Makes you feel a lot more grown up!

I started 6th form today. And loved it

I enjoyed all my lessons, the atmosphere was brillant no more constant shouting etc from people like you get at a secondary school. The teachers were very friendly and generally I just think its great and hope to do really well.

I think you'll find it will get better its just a a matter of adjusting to a new atmosphere.

I finished sixth form last year and from experience you should learn to love it. Give it a couple of months then you will know for sure if you want to carry on or not.

Lower sixth for me was really fun, upper sixth was more work and less play and to be honest, I didnt like it very much at all. Just do what you want to do and you will be happy

Thanks for posting guys. Hopefully I'll feel better soon. Just to clarify:
-I DID take subjects I thougt I would enjoy (I'm not and idiot)
-I don't know why I don't like my subjects, I have a bad feeling about them though
-It's a schools sixth form

Everyone else seems to be adjusting fine. All my friends love sixth form. Tomorrow is another day though

Sorry, I wasn't implying anything, I just thought you would have picked subjects you already had experience in therefore, know that you like them. What subjects did you take?

I truly hope things get better for you.

You changed subjects after one lesson?!

----

I loved 6th form. I thought it was better than Uni.

Those heady days from 98-2000 when I discovered the joys of alc-e-hol and clubbing. Only had 7 hours of lessons a week, in 3 subjects I enjoyed. Rest of the time was spent playing football or illegally gambling on pool and killer in the 6th form centre.

All the scum from the previous five years of school were filtered out, so everyone in the 6th form were sound.

Came out of it with a cracking set of A levels aswell.

Classic days, truly classic days.

i just stared 6th form today, i love it at the moment. all you need to do is find someone in all your lessons that you can talk to at least and you can get along. then at breaks or lunchs just meet up with your normal friends.

for my options i am doing further maths (which includes stats, mechanics and pure at an advanced level), chemistry and late modern history. i was told by everyone that it would be too much but i had nearly 3 hours of further maths today and as i am in a small group it is good. you just need to stick with them a bit longer for everyone to settle in.

It's a lot different from lower school but worth it...I love it. But in Psychology, I had no friends, and it was a bit tough...luckily I sat next to a new girl and now we're really friendly. So stick in there, it'll be okay!

Yes. I know it sounds really bad, but I got a really bad feeling about doing it, and I trust my instincts (something to do with being religious I think).

Cheers for posting everyone, I'll try my best to be happy tomorrow

Don't worry - I hated my form group! I loved my form tutor, but everyone in my group was either a boy I'd loathed during our time in the lower school, or a total stranger. Didn't make a single friend out of the lot in two years!

All my teachers talked up how much harder things would be, and yes, the work was a lot harder, and you were expected to take on more responsibility. But in return, the teachers treated you like adults, and were more friendly. Discussion was encouraged, rather than being frowned upon as something to distract from teaching.

Allow yourself a couple of weeks of adjustment. I went to the sixth form college attached to my high school, but a lot of students had come in from other schools. They found it a lot harder to settle in, as they didn't know the teachers, the layout of the school, or what was considered acceptable.

I loved my time in sixth form - you've got much more freedom, but there are still teachers who care about you and want to help. Just take it easy for a few weeks until yuo find your feet.

I have just finished sixth form and there were times I thought about quitting near the beginning, but I decided to stick at it. Give your subjects a go before deciding to change...then just go with your instincts about whether you would like to continue with them for another two years or not. It is difficult but don't give up, because it's over in a flash. I loved the sixth form it was a great time for having freedom and having good relationships with your teachers. You will get used to it don't worry...you will work out your own way of coping with the work and teachers are always there to help you with your decisions!

Good luck for now!

I started a week ago !

I love it !

The atmosphere is so different from before, you do not get judged by people who find themselves 'above' anymore You can get on with your life your way !

I'm sure you'll love it after. It's always hard to change.

Good luck

Does any schools still have just Year 12, because our school has Year 12 and Year 13, or Lower and Upper Sixth Form.
