Preston FM 87.9 (Stay Pressed on)

PRESTON FM HIT THE AIRWAVES ON SUNDAY

PRESTON is getting its very own community radio station, with a one-month pilot first hit the airwaves on Sunday (October 2, 2005) on 87. 9 FM.

It will offer something for everyone, with the help of about 120 volunteers from all backgrounds, walks of life, cultures, faiths and age groups.

Broadcasting daily throughout October, Preston FM will feature everything from local news to programmes about Islam in Preston, from arts news and profiles to slots about local business, mental health, self-help, local music, domestic violence and sports.

There will be weekday breakfast shows and drivetime programmes as well as music shows covering everything from jazz and reggae to 80s chart and dance music, country, rock, soul, folk, heavy metal and classical.

The station will also have programmes reflecting both Black History Month and Ramadan, broadcast in English, Urdu, Gujurat and Arabic.

The project is led by Prescap (Preston Community Arts Project) and has been funded for two years by the European Regional Development Fund, the AvenCentral Partnership and Preston City Council through its E-city project.

A second pilot is planned for next spring and the station will also broadcast on the Internet at www.preston.fm – organisers hope Ofcom will grant Preston FM a full-time licence later in 2006.

Project manager Richard Lace said the station had two major aims: to provide programmes which will be interesting and entertaining to the people of Preston, and to allow Prestonians to try their hand at being on the radio. People from all walks of life are volunteering with the station and are learning new skills as they go along,’’ he said.

The daily breakfast programme, with Darren Jenkinson - formerly from Wythenshaw FM - will bring in a host of representatives from local organisations including council leaders, police officers and voluntary and community groups to talk about what they do and how people can access services.

Volunteer Natalie Walker believes it is an exciting opportunity for all members of the community, young or old. “I am particularly interested in this project as I can become actively involved within the community and as I am considering pursuing a career in radio it gives me more experience and I can have fun along the way,” she said.
