IMPORTANT NEWS
(From Analoguesat)
A reminder - this week is the solar outages week, when the sun passes directly behind the satellite arc. The intense microwave radiation pouring out of the sun can disrupt reception as it swamps the feeble downlinks off the satellites. Normally most noticable where the signals are weak anyway -Ive already seen reports of 2D reception being knocked out in Spain for half an hour at a time - and that was a week from the peak days.
You can calculate the exact times for your location here:

Bits of Radio news

The Edge (in North Lanarkshire, Scotland,) has been finally sold. The ex Radio one jock (Me) Mark Page’s group who run several “Garrison Radio” stations has bought it.Story(JMFWP)

Pulse Rated now available on Channel 905. (Ian Cleverly.)

The much-anticipated relaunch of Radio Luxembourg's English service is due. A new website at www.radioluxembourg.co.uk is streaming the same output as the DRM tests currently taking place on 7145 kHz, with a format of classic rock music, new jingles, and some presentation which seems to be live, but may be voice-tracked. The Web audio quality is excellent listening to the high quality Winamp feed at 128 kbps. Media Network understands that the new service will be digital-only, i.e. over the air in DRM, and on the Internet. Media Network first reported that RTL was considering reviving the UK service on 5 May 2004. (medianetwork.blogspot.)

Ofcom is looking to make three new blocks of spectrum in Band III (174-230 MHz) available for new local DAB multiplexes. This would ensure every region in the UK had at least one digital multiplex. Ofcom was now consulting on a further one, "or even two" national multiplexes, "and digesting, carefully, the responses they have received" before reaching a decision this summer. More space for innovation and convergence will be available in the L-Band spectrum (1452-1492 MHz): 16 blocks of DAB compatible spectrum, which they plan to release next year. (From dtg.org)

Two BBC research scientists have been award the prestigious best technical paper prize at this year's International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). The paper – Digital On-Channel Repeater for DAB - describes a technique for improving reception of DAB digital radio services by using on-channel repeaters – small transmitters that pick up the wanted service off-air, amplify it and rebroadcast it. Normally such a technique would cause oscillation like the familiar 'howl-round' from microphone to loudspeaker. But Adam and Peter have developed digital signal processing circuitry that cancels out the feedback that causes instability.

New Product
In Japan, Hitachi has launched the world's first hard disk drive/DVD recorder capable of storing one terabyte of data, about 128 hours of high-definition digital broadcasting. Hitachi says the new model will be the first on the market capable of simultaneously recording two high-definition programs, a key selling point for Japanese consumers (Wotsat.com)

The BBC is reported to be backing research on a new personal video recorder (PVR) that would need no programming, and could instead record every show broadcast on Freeview over a seven-day period. Broadcast magazine are saying that the BBC was helping to fund the project by technology firm Promise TV to develop a PVR that could outperform rival devices such as Sky+. Sky revealed it now had 880,000 Sky+ customers, a rise of 118,000 on the previous quarter. The BBC's interest apparently centres on how PVR users navigate through stored shows.Broadcast said work on the prototype—codenamed Pandora—was being funded by BBC Research and Development.

Sharp Corporation and Sharp Laboratories of Europe, Ltd have developed a new LCD, which can simultaneously display different information and image content in right and left views in a single unit by directionally controlling the viewing angle of the LCD. This feature makes it possible to provide information and content tailored to specific users depending on the angle at which they view the screen. Volume production of the LCD will begin in July 2005, marking the introduction of the world’s first practical application of this technology. How it works (FromMedia Blog.com)

Newsie Bits

1. It's been confirmed – Sky News' new look will go live on 24th October 2005. On that date, the free-to-air satellite channel will switch to 16:9 WideScreen format, with new graphics and a new schedule. (Media 24/7 Media Weblog)

2. Nation 217 as been renamed on the EPG as Quiz Nation on channel 217 also Classics TV as been renamed to DoveVision TV (Sky Fan)

3. UKTV, is launching a new 10 part Sports programme called UKTV Sport which launches on UKTV G2 on Saturday 15th October - this is where it seems a misunderstanding (quoted in a few articles) occurred concerning a joint-venture between the BBC and Flextech, UKTV Sport may well happen sometime in the future but an imminent launch is out of the question. (www.media247.co.uk)

4. Sky and Disney are reportedly at loggerheads over a carriage arrangement for the Disney Channel. At the heart of the dispute is the amount paid by Sky for the channel. Back in 1994 Sky needed to demonstrate the breadth of its channels. And that, according to The Times, strengthened Disney's hand in negotiations.(dtg.org.uk)

5. Channel 4 will announce this week it has taken a stake in Freeview by joining the consortium that owns the free-to-air digital TV service. ( James Robinson. Media Gaurdian)

6. ITV's new free-to-air children's channel will launch on 11th February 2006.

7. ITV to launch two more channels ITV Play and Shopping and the already announced ITV4 More Here

Sky’s HD box to cost £400 Details hereHave a look at Sky’s HD (HiDef) box

 By Kevin May, from Media Weekly, he writes; A suggests that the number of HDTV sets will double in 2005 to around 60,000, but will then soar to around 2.7 million over the next five years. The number of HDTV sets in UK homes is set to increase dramatically by 2010 as broadcasters and manufacturers go on the offensive with major marketing campaigns. The UK is currently eighth in the world with HDTV take-up rates, the US is the market leader with 11.4 million sets and due to see a four-fold increase to around 48 million by 2010. With Japan and China expected to lead the HDTV revolution over the next five years, with a combined total of almost 30 million sets, up from 6 million in 2004. Sky is currently warming up for a major push for its HDTV system in the coming months.

 SES Astra has secured a long-term contract to provide Sky with three additional 28.2 East transponders. Sky will take advantage of the increased availability of transponder capacity to transmit its forthcoming package of high-definition (HD) television services, which is due to be launched in the UK and Ireland in the first half of 2006. Your TV 2 as a total guess...

or You TV 2 Extra Extra

Could the other new test label be for Legal TV? This is meant to be launching on Monday 24th October.

Could the two test labels "53250" and "53251" be for TTV2 and TTV3 ? These would go on EPG numbers 167 and 168. This would use up TTV's other two EPG slots before the EPG reshuffle later this year. It would also follow moves by other broadcasters that seem to be using up their other two slots before the overhaul. Life TV and You TV have already used up their other EPG numbers.

I suppose its possible, but does the EPG info on these two tests relate to the programming thats on TTV?

TTV on EPG # 166 only shows 'The Great Big British Quiz', so TTV2 and TTV3 might show other quiz related programming. Programming on TTV2 and TTV3 might only be temporary to simply use up the other two EPG numbers. Having the two channels timesharing also saves money as only one 24 stream is needed in order to get their hands on EPG numbers 167 and 168.
