Two BBC research scientists have been award the prestigious best technical paper prize at this year's International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). The paper – Digital On-Channel Repeater for DAB - describes a technique for improving reception of DAB digital radio services by using on-channel repeaters – small transmitters that pick up the wanted service off-air, amplify it and rebroadcast it. Normally such a technique would cause oscillation like the familiar 'howl-round' from microphone to loudspeaker. But Adam and Peter have developed digital signal processing circuitry that cancels out the feedback that causes instability.

Newsie Bits

1.
VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!!
There is NO new EPG update coming before the end of this month.
Sky has acknowledged that there are software difficulties associated with the "complexity" of the upgrade and have caused it to be postponed. It won't start being uploaded until late this month...and Sky don't anticipate complete rollout until the end of the year or early 2006. Only after all that will the consequent rernumbering of channels (originally scheduled for 29th November) occur. So, no large-scale renumbering until mid-January, at the earliest. This isn't rumour or speculation. All channels were told so in a written letter last week. There will doubtless be reports of people receiving "new" EPG software - but these are likely to be no more than the fixes to the intermediate, enabling, upgrade, which was started back in the summer, but which has itself caused so many problems. (Thanks go to Strathclyde) More Here

It does seem a little strange. I would have though both 2shopTV and ITV4 would be added to the EPG at the same time, but obviously not.
