Job Club

After reading this thread it made me remember a few years back when I was on the new deal program.

They sent me to a JOB CLUB for 2 weeks and it was the worst few weeks of my life. I'd finished collage and was finding it hard to get a job in the area of work which I wanted --- IT, Office Work. I'd not had a job before and was really down because nobody would employ me.

So this job club.... I turned up on a Monday morning and walked into this room with tables & chairs all in a circle. Tea/Coffee making facilities in the corner. It was empty, apart from a bloke in a suit writing on a whiteboard.

I sat down and I heard what I thought was a pack of loud animals running up the stairs.. The racket was getting louder and louder and I was getting quite nervous. Then what would burst though the door........ a group of about 15 yobbos/chavs/scallies/scrouts - call them what you like. All F'ing this F'ing that... all dressed in the same type of gear.

To cut a long long long story down, I had to spend 2 whole weeks with a group of anti-social yobs who had no intention of getting or even wanting a job. They were only there because they had too or they would cut off their DOLE.... their words not mine.

They would throw paper airplanes around, mess about, shout, swear, listen to music.... one girl was doing what looked like a sex act to a ruff-looking scallie next to her.

The person who was suppose to be in charge did nothing to stop this behavior.

I had to spend 7 hours a day there and all we did was read through job newspapers, read booklets and listen or should I say try and listen to talks and speeches and look on the new deal website for jobs.

It was a bloody nightmare, By the end of the first week I didn't want to go back but I had too... Everybody in the group was a bloody idiot.

What ever I did there I could of done at home. It was a completely wasted and stressful 2 weeks.

What made matters worst was that everybody there were either mates or knew each other.

At the beginning we had to fill out a form and standup and introduce ourselfs. They would stand up and completely act the fools.... these are some of the answers they shouted out.

Favorite Book: Playboy, Girobook, TV Guide, Anything with naked woman in.

Favorite Hobbies: Drinking White Lightning, Rolling a nice fat spliff, Shagging

You can imagine the sort of answers.

One guy who must of been about 24 bragged that hes been here 4 times he said its a great LAUGH... you get a free bus pass for 2 weeks, free lunch for 2 weeks -- can just chill out and have a laugh.

Do you know what I did at the end of the 2 weeks... I went to the job center and SIGNED OFF, I didn't want to claim any more benefits, I didn't want to turn out like that bunch. I was unemployed for about 5 months after that. Yes I was skint, but I was still living with my parents and they didn't ask for any money. I did have some money to live off because unlike that lot at the job club I didn't spend all my JSA on booze and drugs. I saved most of my benefit and I only claimed in the first place was because I was entitled to it. I was just so glad to get off it.

I've now been in full time employement for about 19 months now, its not a good job (altho theres worst jobs) and I don't really like it.... but ITS A JOB, I keep my head down pay my taxes and stamp duty. It's the not area of work which I would like but at the end of the day --- ITS A JOB and it's better then being on the DOLE.

Have you ever attended a Job Club and was it anything like that?

That sounds like a nightmare experience. You did the right thing for yourself by getting out and getting a job. Well done. The next step will be for you to work towards getting into your preferred field of work. Maybe you need to study or get some qualification for that? At least you have given yourself a stable base from which to work now and can progress from there if you want to. Good luck anyway.

I'm thinking of doing a open university course and according to their website I could even get my fees paid for up to £500ish i think because I earn less then £15,000 a year.

I couldn't do that job, even for £100 a hour.

I used to work in McDonalds right opposite the Dole office. They used to sign on and come straight over to fill up on their chav fuel. They used to take the piss out of our jobs. (I admit Maccy D's isn't all that, but every job i've had since has been much easier and it teaches you what hard monotonous work is) Still, at least i actually had a job!!

The OU is great. Go for it. Working towards something you want is the way to go. Carve out the life you want for yourself and you will never regret it. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Everytime I've been in a Job Club they've always been a decent, helpful bunch of people. Maybe it depends where you live.

No one will employ someone with a criminal record I guess I may as well claim Income support for the rest of my life.

Never say never.... as long as your own up and tell them, they might even respect you for it.
