Teletext on ITV just got better!

Following the improvements to BBCi, the Teletext service on channel 100 and on all ITV cahannels has now been improved!

Both the channel 100 service and the 'on ITV' version now have GameCentral, ACE, PlanetSound, BigScreen, Horoscopes, more TV preview / soap pages, Cinema Listings etc...

Its quite simple to use with arrow keys and select but as several sections have been merged the page numbering is quite messy - still, nice to see more analogue contant now also on digital!

ITVi doesn't have too much. On Sky, it gives you access to voting (for the X Factor etc) and some information about programmes etc.

I'd rather the choice of channels available on Freeview was improved.

That could do with its own thread to let more people know.

Well Freeview Adict I have already started a new thread about teletext cars now having an audio stream.

The thread is called Voice now added to Teletext Cars.

I wonder if 'Teletext on ITV' will eventually appear on LCN 103? There must be a reason why teletext has moved holidays and cars down a number. Teletext obviously needs LCN 103 rather than LCN 101.

Still far slower that analogue Teletext. Despite the fact that digital text is supposed to be an improvment.

Not for multiple page items, to get them from the start is on average much much faster (you could get lucky and start off on page 1) , or if your reading speed is at all different from that of teletext's page refreshes - too slow and you have to let it loop or press Hold that screws up the order too fast and you have to wait for the next refresh). Plus there are no intrusive unskipable whole page ads.

The issue is that modern TVs have caches for Teletext pages (so the next previous and fast text linked pages) are instant but that doesn't seem to have happened with DTT. Which is odd as from what I've read they seem to store content in "files" (as in with a name like on a PC) that you'd have thought the latest version of them that had been broadcast since going on the channel could be stored in relatively little RAM (well Teletext have 1.2MBPs and takes perhaps a couple of seconds to load that's 300k - maybe more which is nothing), thus giving the whole service instantly once you enter it/the channel in the case of BBC, ITV and 4.

Agree about multiple page items and the hold issue.

Caching the service in boxes would be a good idea and would help get round the bandwidth issues. Seems strange that such an idea wasn't thought of when designing the software for digital text especially as fast text has been around for quite a long time.

Oohh, very happy to finally get GameCentral on Digital, just a shame it's not on the C4/E4/More4 text and on ITV's (heck, since it's the same mux all content could be available on both anyway!). Mixed emotions after loosing BackChat and Chatterbox from Ceefax last week tho

GameCentral is on Teletext on ITV. See page 800 for all the entertainment stuff.

Better?

The TV listings are still crap and badly laid out. The graphics look like they've been done by a "Meedja" student coming down off an acid trip. It takes ages to load and ages for anything to appear - on any of the three boxes I have.

"Better" as in better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick?

Calling up pages is much faster on digital text than analogue here, although it has slowed down significantly in the last few weeks (since Teletext on 4 was upgraded, in fact). Traditional teletext always takes a maximum of ~24 seconds to reach the page you are after (subpages notwithstanding), whereas digital text takes more like 3-5 seconds on a modern box.

The MHEG spec mandates some cache (1MB?).

If you don't believe me, try pulling the aerial cable out after entering a text service - you should still be able to access pages that are in the cache.

The carousels on DTT used to be around 10 seconds in length - so that's 12Mb (or 1.5MB).

Teletext on 4 only works on newer boxes because they have more memory - thus the bitrate is smaller and the carousel is longer. This is why it is deathly slow on boxes with little cache, and as fast as the main Teletext service on others.
