Nickelodeon in kids Freeview plan

Nickelodeon is launching a pre-school programming block on Freeview through its sister channel TMF.

I wish TMF would follow the example of TMF in the Netherlands and allow part of its day to be given to Nickelodeon for all ages. It would be great for Freeview. Mind you, I've always been a big kid!

EDIT: Seems as if they no longer do it in the Netherlands. (http://www.tmf.nl/ under TV > TV Gids)

IMHO they should show Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy on TMF. I miss them not being on Channel Four and BBC Two respectively.

Will run a 7-9am block only I see.

Interesting statement at the bottom of the article:

Meanwhile, US indie 4kids Entertainment, distributor of shows such as Pokemon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, looks set to scrap plans to launch a kids block on one of Sit-Up TV's Freeview channels.

If it's popular then they'll expand on the 7 - 9 am thing. It's all about what gets them the biggest audience.

Ok, I've been trying to post this in a new thread but although the system says it's been posted it doesn't actually display:

"With news that Nickelodeon are to have a free kids strand and with the ITV kiddie channel due soon, does this make pay kids channels on the DTT platform less attractive to anyone here?

(maybe just maybe this thread will avoid becoming a pro/anti-TUTV thread!)"

Free Nickelodeon Strand - bad news for pay kids channels?

at last, the forum is back

i guess it really depends on the ages that they are aiming at.

Both the ITV Kids & Nick channels may appeal to younger audiences that Cartoon Network & Boomerang don't.

Am no expert on the childrens channels, as I rarely watch them, but at least there is going to be more choice available to children.

Asking this question is similar to perhaps asking that the newer Freeview channels negates the need for some of the other TUTV channels, but in my opinion, the more choice the better.

At least now if/when my daughter comes to visit me, she will be able to see Dora the Explorer like she does when she's at home....and not just what CBeebies offers

Because with this programming for free, why would you pay for similar content?

The other FTA channels will be useful when this timeslot is not in use.

Ditto - except that I have no kids.

Trying to frame the discussion in terms which limits the TUTV debates:0

I guess I'm really wondering if the time is coming when people might start to look to ANY/ALL pay-tv channels to offer content not even close to what is available FTA.

Does it make any difference? Dont most kids want as many channels as possible even if they never watch most of them?

It's ok in the mornings, but what about kids getting in from school? ITV Kids and Nick will be off (certaintly after 6pm), so you still don't get the American-type style programming. Just CBeebies etc. The channels on cable and satellite run later than that.

I won't complain about more content on Freeview though.

I wonder whether it'll be a vehicle to advertise the Nick family on pay TV?

Even you can't be unaware that the forum had major issues this AM. My intention - as the post you linked to so clearly says - had been to start a new thread.

Even when I posted it in the linked thread the system gave failure notices.

When the system returned I posted in a new thread unaware of the fact that, despite the error messages, my post to the thread had been successful.

I wonder if this is what Viacom bid for the new slot on Mux D for?

Although 4Kids has now given up, I wonder if this is something we are going to see more of now spare capacity is low? Channels increasingly willing to buy into other channels time to get a foothold on Freeview?

I expect that means we will see more and more Timeshares on DTT

...and to think just one year ago we were repeatedly told no one wanted space on Freeview!

Its not similar, its a strand on TMF that will be branded 'Noggin' for pre-school kids and ends at 9am. It's nothing to do with cartoon network etc, its old nick shows.

Cartoon Network runs from 6am to 6pm and its totally different, this noggin channel is competition for cbeebies if anything. So is bad news for the bbc and bad news if you liked TMF music videos in the morning. Which may be another reason for some to move from freeview to sky, oh yes you already did that didn't you?

TMF and The Hits are largely the same outside of themed hours, in my opinion.

I don't think BBC type parents would put on Noggin anyway, to be honest. Unless the kids are going to look for it, or the parents want to try it, I think the more educational value the BBC shows offer will be chosen over cartoons or old Nick shows.

(My opinion)

I also think if people are going to have pay TV they'd already have it. New subscriptions are really slowing down now - I think most will be happy with what Freeview offers. When I was a kid we only had BBC One or ITV to choose from. We had Nick and Cartoon Network on Sky analogue but they weren't that good/were repeats anyway.

Why can't kids be out playing football or something anyway?

So i take it the Two hours will not warrant a new LCN?

it will just be shown on TMF like Screenshop is on Bid TV?

Also living here in the US we have Noggin on DirecTV. Of all the Kids Channels here, PBS Kids and Noggin are the better ones for pre-school kids. Even Cartoon Network USA has a new morning Slot for Pre-School now called Tickle-U. 7am-12pm

This isn't going to be like Sky's Noggin. They've changed their name to Nick Jr Classics.

This is another sign that TMF is transforming into a general entertainment channel. It is a sensible move as it encourages the household to stay with TMF all day as it targets the main audience for that time of the day.
Example :
mornings : kids
daytime : music videos
teatime : after school txting
primetime : general entertainment
overnight : quizzes/music videos for viewers returning home from the pub

The upside of CBBC and CBeebies is No Adverts = No pester power

I think the biggest threat to CN and Boomerang is the kids growing up, after all means nothing to them be it a pay channel or not, to them theyre all free

As this will only be on for a couple of hours in the morning, and CBeebies repeat every 4 hours, I don't see it'll have any (significant, at least) impact on CBeebies.
