Hollyoaks - The "Barnes" family
I know Sarah was introduced a while ago....but WHY does H/O insist on showing families where the mum and dad are TERRIBLE actors? Aside from the Hunters, the Ashworth parents and now the Barnes parents are truly appalling - both look like blonde bimbos, and neither the mum or dads can deliver their lines at all.
It was interesting to read on the H/O official site that the "actress" who plays the Barnes mother had her last real main acting part in the 70's or 80's. No surprises why, my dog could deliver lines better than her. I don't care about anyone in that family, the sister Amy is also annoying, as are the Ashworth parents and the boy Josh. H/O is really going downhill in my opinion introducing such sublime characters

I like Sarah and the dad. Not keen on the mum and Amy seems like a pretty bad actress but I think they need time to settle into the roles and get some decent storylines.

Yep i agree those two families are a tad cringeworthy

I like Sarah and her dad and H/O is great
Hollyoaks atleast take about 6 months - to a year to develop new characters and families |

The Mam and Dad can't act.
I like Sarah and Amy. Amy reminds me of Steph.

Mr and Mrs Hunter were good actors, and I doubt a person of the ages of Mr and Mrs Barnes can improve their acting much |

I can only give them a chance if I think they could potentially improve. The actresses who play/ed Louise and Dannii improved because they were given some decent storylines. But look at Jez and Richard Taylor utter useless no chance they could possibly be any better without a head transplant. Same goes for Carrie Owen and Sarah's mother. I'll give Sarah and Fletch and Josh a chance as up until now they have had awful storylines.

The Barnes & Ashworth families are terrible. I like Mike Barnes and Rhys Ashworth but collectively both families are just dreadful.
I'd like to see more characters over the age of 30 - and more powerful female characters like Liz - who in my opinion out-acts most of the younger ones in every scene she's in. It's a shame the Hunter family revolved around the teenagers, I'd liked to have Sally and Les stay on. Now we're stuck with Kathy, Mike, Carrie, Rob, Suzanne, Neville, Jack, Frankie & Liz as the 'oldies' of Hollyoaks - Most not setting a good example. Last edited by Mad Puppy : 05-02-2006 at 16:46. |

Older characters are often poor-but they are not the emphasis of the program, Liz Taylor is a good older character but she has had good storylines, Frankie Osbourne does the comedy very well and the banter with Jack is good
The Barnes mother? Kill her (preferably in a violent painful death) |

The Hunters parents were OK. Frankie is good as is Jack. I don't mind Carrie but they should give her something to do. Liz is good too.
However The Owen's dad is awful and cannot act. The Barne's mother too is annoying. I haven't seen enough of the Ashworth's yet but seemed ok to me. The Dad of the Barnes family seemed ok too but again haven't seen enough to judge. |

I agree with what a lot of people have said here and on the Hollyoaks forum, I like the dad and I like Sarah (although I think she looks way to old to be a schoolgirl, she should have come in as a student). I can't stand the mum or Amy though. I think the writers should look at why families like the Hunters, Morgans, Cunninghams were so sucessful for so many years. For a start the people playing the characters were good to watch, they had a decent level of acting ability that didn't make you feel like you were watching some village hall amdram production. The characters weren't too over the top and in your face either..... I find the Ashworths very in your face, as are old ma Barnes and Amy. I think they need to bring them in gradually, or have them relatively normal to start with, gradually giving them more of a central role so viewers can at least get used to them. Also, whilst the need to use the idea of what made other families sucessful, they shouldn't try and copy it. The new families feel like an attempt to create the Hunters and Morgans.

Is there a reason why the Ashworth parents have only been in about three episodes since they joined the show?

too be fair theres no good actors/actress left.. max and OB they are getting boring but are still good but too be fair i think they are going to get the chop soon, but in my opion none of the new actors/actress can act and they are getting crap storylines i mean fletch and josh how much are they trying to be the next bombhead and lee but its just not happening too obivous, i think mandys a bit passed it shes had too many things happen to her. hannah and sarah and them 2 new girls they just cant act. i think it could be just because suddlenly all these new characters have come in because all the old ones seem to have left around the same time. but how good was it when dan, ben, lisa, lee, bombhead etc was on it, supose should give it time, but getting back to the thread none of the parents can act, gave richard time but he still couldnt act or seemed to care bout his son dying etc, that gramps bloke was the best actor

I'm glad some of you agree with me. I don't see why I should give an actor " a chance" - yes, agreed, a character can grow on you, but Im not talking about their characters, Im talking about the people as actors. You can either act or you can't.
Mrs Barnes, Carrie Owen, Mr and Mrs Ashworth (in their less than 5 appearances), Richard Taylor....all bad actors...imho
