Nottingham Community Radio Changes

I've noticed this evening a couple of changes on the Nottingham FM band (while running autotune on my MP3)

"Fiza" on 97.1 has now split into it's two services of:

1. Faza FM (Asian Womens Project) on 97.1 - "FAZA_FM_"
and
2. Dawn FM (Karminia Institue) on 107.6 - "DAWN_FM_"

Both are FM Stereo with RDS, but here in West Bridgford Dawn FM is noticably weaker than Faza FM.

must be a new thing cuz all the info i have said that the 97.1 station on 97.1 had a frequency but the other didnt have one. How soon for my local one Vale FM renamed switch radio to get a frequency? they were 80th in the queue

Edit: the only accurate information is on this website and it hasnt been updated to say the station is online

Is 107.6 also Asian music?

If so seems a tad excessive when there are no other communtiy stations in town.

never thought of that. you got the BBC Asain Network whick i'm sure is pretty clear on 837MW plus the 1116 relay from BBC R. Derby in the day - i think plus Sabras Leicester 1260 Mw. Leicester isnt that big so you are probably right there

I can pick Dawn FM up in Newark but not Fiza. Fiza is ok after Bingham when heading into the city.

There's an Afro-Caribbean station coming soon as well, NBC Live.

It just occurred to me - wasn't the Afro-Caribbean pirate in Nottingham on 107.5? Does anyone know if they moved, or closed - or, going by their past activities, neither?

There was no sign of them (or Freeze) yesterday and none this evening, I wouldn't be surprised if there transmitter has drifted out of band though

Well NBC Live is due to launch, and the non-asian community is served by Trent, Heart, Saga, BBC Nationals, BBC Nottingham, Classic FM, Virgin and talkSPORT, and for those just outside the city we have 103 The Eye too.

While both Asian networks (837 and 1116) are strong neither officially serve Nottingham, I don't think I've ever heard Sabras Sound on AM though (however both stations are on DAB)

For me, 97.1 Faza comes in very strongly, but 107.6 Dawn FM comes in quite weakly.

Will be very interesting to see where NBC Live is located.

The Asian Women’s Project and the Karimia Institute currently jointly operate one of the pilot access/community radio services and began broadcasting in March 2002. They have now successfully applied to run separate services.

Sabras is on 1260 AM and ive heard them here in Birmingham so you should get a good signal. As for neither officially covering the TSA of these new stations your point is well taken. hoever i would question whether Leicester can support both stations

That didn't last for long, they are back, in their favourite position of just 0.3MHz from a licenced service, although unlike when it was next door to Century it doesn't appear to be hurting Dawn FM.

As for Sabras - nope, no sign of it on 1260, however the Asian network is on 837 and 1116AM.

Strange despite the interference from international use i can still get 'em about S2 whereas 837 is virtually unusable here

I heard SNC Student Radio on 87.9 this morning in West Bridgford.
Quite a lot of new activity around the city at the moment.

1260? You do surprise me. I can get it in Derby, and down the road in Burton-on-Trent.

Ashfield Community Radio on 97.5 until the 18th, Radio Hucknall on the way... very busy at the moment.

Can't seen an SNC on the RSL listings though?

1260 is probably directional to protect Classic Gold 1260 in Wrexham, so it will radiate much more power in some directions than others.

As for Leicester not being able to support two Asian stations, I should think it can - according to the city council it has a population of 280,000, of which 29.9% are Asian, a bigger proportion than any other city in the UK. That makes 83,720 Asians, more than double the entire population of Hinckley.

Of course they listen to Trent FM, however they don't play any Asian music (apart from a once in the blue moon crossover tune), or offer programming in various Asian languages - Faza and Dawn probably offer the people of Nottingham a much better improvement in choice than the likes of The Eye (not to detract from how good that station actually is). I was mearly responding to the poster earlier who complained that two Asian stations was excessive.

As for SNC, can't hear a whisper on my mobile or XDR-S1, (both of which get The Eye) - however my Pioneer Amp gets it, and according to OFCOM's current RSLs its a 7 dayer.

Not forgetting that one of them is for Birmingham, Coventry (and Warwickshire?) too....

What do you think of The Eye? I can get it here - not really locally relevant to me.. and some of the presenters are a little too slowly paced for my liking.

If it stops other community stations getting on air across the East Midlands, it's definitely excessive.

The music variety is great - when they say Queen is next you can't guess the song and there is a fair amount of "I havn't heard that song in ages" that crops up. The presenters arn't the slickest in the work, but they are getting the hang of it, sound natural and like people rather than androids.

But it hasn't - hence NBC Live, Siren FM, Takeover, The Eye and others - I still think the East Midlands needs a third regional station (possibly just covering Derby, Nottingham and Leicester rather than the bits in between from three transmitters) to offer a "youth" station - maybe even an extension of Kerrang 105.2 or Galaxy 105. - OFCOM proposed using 87.6 in London IIRC, so perhaps they could use 87.5 from Colwick Park, 87.7 from Drum Hill, 87.7 from Loughbourgh University Tower and 87.5 from the old Leicester Sound 103.2 site - or 87.5 from Waltham and 87.7 from Drum Hill.

87.5 isn't useable, because it's the band edge. FM stations have a +/-75kHz deviation. 87.5 - 0.075 = 87.425 which is out of band. 87.6MHz is the lowest useable frequency. Likewise, 108.0 can't be used.

Further, 87.6 + 10.7 (the nominal intermediate frequency) is 98.3, which is a common high power frequency for BBC R1, which would make 87.6 unusable. 87.7 isn't that hot either (given that some radios have an IF of 10.6MHz, and you get some splatter), which is why it gets used by RSL stations.

Band planning isn't as simple as looking at which frequencies aren't in use. Selecting a frequency is only part of the problem, you then have to work out what field strengths exist and are required for the new service, and take into account protection ratios, IFs, etc.

Eh? In that case the whole of the band below 91.2 would be completely unusable everywhere - any channel you care to name between 97.7-101.9 is a common high power channel for Radio 1 or Classic FM.

Besides, it's increasingly recognised that the 10.7MHz restriction isn't that critical. They ignore it in most countries. They also ignore it in Bradford, yet I hear no complaints from there.
