Question about Grant's original exit episode in 1999 - Soaps

when Grant first left Walford in 1999 in the River thames episode, he saw Steve Owen in the street and when Steve said he wanted a word to sort out some unfinished business, Grant just went up and punched him for no apparent reason. What was the rivalry between grant and Steve cos I never watched it in 1999 but only saw the episode recently.

That was actually Phil who hit him. I remember as I watched the episode on the UK Gold Mitchell Moments programme recently.
I'm not too sure why Phil and Steve hated each other though.

I know Phil and Steve hated each other but I am 100% sure it was Grant who punched Steve in the episode his and Phil's car crashed into the River thames.

Grant was wanted by the police I think for that money he and Phil stole before the car went into the thames.

And that is why he Beppe went after him but was too late when Grant waved his little goodbye before the gates closed at the airport and wasn't seen again until October last year with a Hello Mum.

Something to do with Mel, surely? She had everyone while she was there, didn't she?

Mel was married to Steve??? I thought she turned him down in favour of that other EE superhunk, Ian Beale. After all given that choice, what girl wouldn't choose Ian of course?

Incidentally, were we ever told how Grant survived that obviously fatal crash? I just remeber Peggy and Phil being upset for a while, getting over it and then a year or so later Peggy talking about "wait until Grant gets back" or something, and there being no expression of surprise on Phil's face when Grant phoned (or wrote, or something like that) a while later, although it seems all years ago now.

No I don't think we did. Billy just visited Phil who was recovering from the crash in hospital and gave him some money that he and Grant had stolen and said Grant is alive and that was it and we saw grant very brielfy at the airport before he left

wasn't part of the rivalry between Steve and Phil down to the fact that Steve tried to help Lisa & Louise leave Walford?

When Steve left he was trying to get away with Louise to meet Mel & Lisa....then there was the crash and Steve's subsequent death!

(As well as the Mel thing which obviously didn't help!!)

She was married to Ian for a few hours, but married Steve when her divorce came through...
