Jane Danson (Leanne Corrie) interview

its a old one from end of last year (not that old) i stumbled across it during my travels and thought maybe some of you might want to read it

Jane Danson is squashed into the corner of a Manchester bar, eating a giant sandwich and talking about Primark. So cheap! Its fantastic for bits and bobs, she says between bites. In jeans, trainers, a little white top, and her face free of make-up, the 26- year old actress looks and sounds like Leanne Battersbys innocent 12- year-old sister.

But all it takes is Leannes gel-filled bra and a brassy hairpiece for sweet Jane to transform into the sex siren of Coronation Street a woman whos currently sleeping with both her none-too-bright boyfriend (Jamie), and his smooth dad (Danny Baldwin).

Leannes the eternal teenager, explains Jane. Shes never grown up. She thought she had when she married Nick, but that went horribly wrong. Now, as long as shes got enough money to buy short skirts and make-up, shes fine. But shell never make anything of herself, maybe thats why she likes all the drama of her relationships.

At first, Jane admits, she struggled to understand Leanne. Its quite hard to get inside her head because shes so strong in lots of ways, but when it comes to men, shes a hopeless cause, she says, as if shes talking about a wayward friend. I do love playing her. She lets me do all the things I wouldnt dare do in real life. Janes real life couldnt be further from the caff-and-cobbles existence of her character. Shes just moved from London back to Manchester with her fianc, actor Robert Beck, 35, and theyre getting married at Christmas. Robert charmed viewers as Brookside heart-throb Peter Harrison back in the 90s and recently starred in Bombshell with Zoe Lucker. Jane used to swoon over a poster of him on her bedroom wall when she was a teenager, and they finally met at an awards do six years ago which, for celebs, is practically a Silver Anniversary.

We are both actors, but were real people as well, argues Jane. People forget that and think just because youre working away for a couple of weeks its all going to fall apart.

Hes even cool, she says, about her snogging scenes. I dont find it difficult to snog Bradley Walsh (Danny Baldwin). You get to know the other person as themselves and you build up a bit of rapport. Its always a giggle and in no way romantic, its choreographed: On this word, you kiss. You just do it. Anyway, its alright, snogging Bradley!

But what if Rob has to kiss some actress? Well, Ive seen him do theatre plays where he has to, and its a bit weird, but as long as they dont linger too long!

Their relationship sounds terribly balanced. We dont really row. Were very similar Im a bit more impulsive sometimes and hes laid- back, but we do suit each other. Hes not the type to row, and Im not either. We can both be stubborn, but because weve gone through periods of being apart, you get to let off steam on your own, and you appreciate each other more when youre together.

Mind you, Jane admits shes got her dark side. Im a Scorpio. Id say Ive got a sting in my tail. I dont get angry often, but when I do, you know about it. But its very rare. Im more of a brooder really. My family call it The Danson Stare.

At the moment, though, shes all loved-up, and Janes happily up to her ears in wedding arrangements. Its going to be a civil ceremony traditional but modern, she enthuses. It started small, but its growing by the day. You invite one person, then you have to invite the next. Still, I dont mind, as long as everybody comes, and has a good time.

The entire set of Corrie seems to be drowning in confetti at the moment. Samia Ghadie (Maria) just got married and Janes close friend Julia Haworth (Ashleys wife, Claire), has also announced her impending big day. Doesnt Jane feel like standing out or doing a Jordan?

No! No pumpkin coach for me! she giggles. I am having bridesmaids, but only a couple of little ones. Ive got lots of nieces and nephews and I dont want a netball team following me down the aisle.

When it comes to the dress, though, my question sparks a flash of the Danson Stare. Im not going to say. I dont want to spoil it, she retorts primly, before breaking into a smile and admitting, I dont want Robert to know. Some things are secret. All I know about Rob is hes having two best men theyre both close mates, so the speeches should be good.

And shes not worrying about the paparazzi tracking them down, either. Ive only been papped once, but I dont get it much. No ones ever done a kiss and tell on me either Ive only been out with nice guys and I havent had many boyfriends, so Im not in much danger.

Right, so shes in love with her long-term fianc, she goes to the gym, she doesnt drink, she doesnt smoke. Its becoming increasingly clear all of Janes sinful urges are channelled into the curvaceous body of Bad Leanne Battersby. Its true, I was a goody-two-shoes at school. I always thought if I did my schoolwork, theyd let me go and do my theatre stuff. Leanne would have really hated me and Id have been terrified of her.

Jane grew up in Bury, near Bolton, and from the age of 11 spent all her spare time at Oldham Theatre Workshop. Lots of us on Corrie went there at the same time loads, she explains. There was Suranne Jones (Karen), Andrew Whyment (Kirk), Antony Cotton (Sean). Its like Friends Reunited at work.

With everything in her life so normal, doesnt Jane find being famous a pain? Shes not the type to fall out of nightclubs wrapped round Dean Gaffney, after all.

Well, my parents arent actors, and nor are my older brother and sister. So it was a novelty at first, but sometimes when we go out it annoys my sister. Shes recently had a baby, and the other day I was looking after the kids and people were coming up to me going, Leanne! It can be a bit much. And its always when youve got loads of spots that you get recognised, she adds, crossly.

Fantastic. There are things that annoy her, after all. Go on then, what would she put in Room 101? Dont get me started, she shrieks, suddenly more animated than shes been all day. First, Big Brother. I cant stand the hype, and who cares? Shes on a roll now. The other thing I cant stand is people. Sorry? People can be so daft. Like when they come up and say, Oi, you slapper! and grab my arm, and I want to go, Arrrgh! Its not real! Having said that, most people are really lovely, she adds hastily. But she hasnt finished. And hand-driers. What is the point of them? You stand there for ages, and its going (blows feebly). Then theres people who talk in the theatre. So rude. Lateness. I cant stand it. And people smoking when shes eating. It drives me mad when its wafting over. Leanne has the odd scene where she smokes, and I look ridiculous. I just dont do it well. So, cigarettes aside, does she want to play Leanne forever? Well, Im really happy at the moment, but I think Id like to have kids, so I dont know how that would work with Corrie.

SCHEMING LEANNE'S BEEN A COMPLETE COW TO MIKE
CORRIE JANE TELLS HOW THE STREET'S GOLD-DIGGER GETS HER JUST DESERTS
By Laura Davidson
It takes a lot to leave loud-mouthed Leanne Battersby speechless - but when she's kept in the dark this week about Coronation Street's biggest departure in a decade, the mouthy Manc is gobsmacked.

She's been grudgingly caring for poor Mike Baldwin through his Alzheimer's hell - hoping to get her hands on his cash - and reckoned she'd be first to know when the he finally bit the bullet.

After weeks of build-up to Corrie veteran Johnny Briggs' big exit, iron Mike finally headed for the big knicker factory in the sky on Friday. But gold-digger Leanne finds out LAST.

Jane Danson, 27, who plays the Battersby battler, said: "Leanne was at home waiting for Mike but he never returned and she only finds out much later on that he's died.

"By the time news reaches her, everyone in Weatherfield is talking about it.

"She genuinely feels snubbed because no one thought to tell her. Although, to be honest, she's got absolutely no right to feel that with the way she's been carrying on."

Jane reckons it's been difficult to find any redeeming features in Leanne lately. First, she broke poor Jamie's (Rupert Hill) heart by sleeping with his dad - Mike Baldwin's wheeler-dealer son Danny (Bradley Walsh).

With pound signs flickering in her eyes, she kept pursuing the middle-aged wide-boy until he finally dumped wife Frankie (Debra Stephenson) so he and Leanne could be an item.

As if that hadn't caused enough of a rift in the Baldwin family, when poor Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, scheming Leanne sank her hooks into Danny even further - spurred on by the thought of his whopping inheritance.

Jane added: "Leanne's been a complete cow. Money has taken over her whole life and she's obsessed with making sure that Mike signs everything over to Danny.

"She's tasted that sort of lifestyle and she's hooked. She's been in the position where she's been down in the dumps before - she's a Battersby, after all, so she doesn't come from money - and for her, this is like winning the lottery. It's now a case of how far will she go."

If there was a line to cross, Leanne skipped over it when she took advantage of confused Mike and accepted his offer of a shopping trip, racking up hundreds of pounds on his credit card.

But there's a spanner in the works of her get-rich-quick plan - Mike's second will leaves the majority of his cash to teenage son Adam.

Corrie legend Mike will be given a send-off to remember this week, with the Cockney's coffin carried through Weatherfield in a traditional black horse-drawn carriage.

Leanne will no doubt shed crocodile tears - but the floodgates open for real soon enough with more troubles ahead.

In real life, Jane has revealed she's pregnant, and Corrie bosses have promised an explosive exit when the actress goes off on maternity leave.

She said: "I'm not sure if the pregnancy will be written into the show but let's just say that although Leanne will be away for a while, she'll definitely be back. I've got a feeling there will be unfinished business to deal with."

Jane's married to a man she used to swoon over as a teenager - Robert Beck, 35, who played hunky Peter Harrison in Brookside when Jane was at school.

The pair met at an awards bash when he was starring as Gavin Ferris in Emmerdale and she was starting out in Corrie. They've been an item since that night almost seven years ago and tied the knot in December last year. Weeks later the couple were delighted to discover they were expecting their first child.

"I keep thinking I should pinch myself," laughed Jane. "I'm touching wood as I'm saying this but at the moment I'm in a job I love with a fantastic storyline, I'm married to the best man in the world and I'm having his baby. Does it get any better than that?

"Our wedding last year was fantastic. It was just before Christmas and we had a lovely day. They couldn't resist, of course, making reference to my teenage crush in the speeches but it was good fun." Hooking up with Robert wasn't Jane's only teenage dream. She's wanted to act since she was at primary school and attended classes at the Oldham Theatre workshop as a child.

When she was 11, she landed the role of deranged youngster Eileen Critchley in Alan Bleasdale's acclaimed drama GBH, opposite Robert Lindsay, Michael Palin and Julie Walters.

That led to parts in kids' show Children's Ward and upstairs-downstairs-style drama The Grand before she was cast as teenage tearaway Leanne. As well as her fiery one-liners, the character's been known for her risquŽ dress sense - but with Jane's due date on August 1, her growing bump mean Leanne's short skirts and revealing tops will need to be toned down.

"We'll give it a few more weeks and then the crew will only be able to film above my shoulders because I'll be so big," said Jane.

"I've got an excuse to eat lots of cakes, which is great. I haven't had any bizarre cravings but I don't know if that's a good thing. I just want to eat everything. I'm generally craving food - any kind of food - all the time."

Jane is planning to take time off after the birth. She added: "I can't wait to be a mum. I've often said to Robert that I wish I could go in a time machine and tell the teenage me what would happen in the future. He just laughs and says that would ruin it all and he's probably right.

"The truth is, things have worked out even better than I could have dreamed back then.

"It's scary, because it really doesn't seem that long ago that I had pictures of him on my pencil case at school.

"Now that I'm going to be a mum, people keep telling me that time will pass even quicker. I want to just slow down for a while and enjoy it.

"As for Leanne, who knows what's coming for her? You definitely haven't seen the back of her, though."

'I LOVE MY JOB, I'M MARRIED TO THE BEST MAN IN THE WORLD AND I'M HAVING HIS BABY.. CAN IT GET BETTER THAN THAT?'

No not as far as I can remember, she was married to Nick for a bit and she was alright then, and then she got in with Jez and the cocaine so she got a bit weird (lol) and then she left. She was quite nice actually I think (apart from when she was stoned )

about the different families Barlows, Platts but mostly the Batterbys but just Lez, Janice Toyah and Leanne. When they first arrived it showed Leanne and Toyah smoking and they nicked some flowers for Janice and a drill out of a van for Lez lol all very funny.

Also they had Leanne and Toyah playing there music really loudly and Curly went round and told them to turn it down and when they wouldnt he threw the radio out of the window so Leanne and Toyah were really gobby to him and Lez headbutted him and Leanne goes nice one dad lol from that i got that Leanne was a gobby, shoplifting troublemaker.

However they did show a bit with Leanne and Nick and she did seem more like she is now

Leanne was great when she first came in. Her and Toyah were loud, mouthy, gobby cows.

Then she married Nick and she mellowed down a bit, and was pretty much what she's like now. But then she got involved with all the Jez stuff, and the character was totally destroyed. I'm glad she left, and then brought back, as I suppose the character needed time to recover. Now, she's better than ever!

i didnt watch it back then but wasnt that the reason they split up because he forced her to have a abortion? does anyone know what year and month that was?

Yeah, Leanne got pregnant but then Nick admittedhe didn't want the baby, and booked Leanne in for an abortion which she didn't want but agreed to do, after Nick couldn't understand why she was so upset about it and they grew further apart I think and eventually Leanne realised she didn't love him and he went off to Canada the abortion and nick leaving was around april 1999
