'Digital Spy: The Soap Opera' Episode 1.1 - Soaps

Episode 1.1

After eight long months of planning, building, stocking, furnishing, preparing and finalising, Pete Henson has finally fulfilled his dream of opening Spyton’s first ever wine bar. The grand opening of his latest business venture, situated in his hometown and sure to be a major success with the residents of the town. As he takes a long soak in his bath to calm and relax him before the launch, his team of workers are busy putting the finishing touches to the project Pete has put his heart and soul into. Eight tiresome and stressful months of sleepless nights, non-stop days and 24 hour determination has paid off and the time has come for Digibar to be unveiled. Pete thinks for a moment about his guests arriving, champagne being served for free and the ribbon being cut. “Jesus!” he cries, leaping from the bath. He grabs a towel, wraps it around his naked body and dashes to the phone. Pete calls his sister, Louise, and tells her he needs her to do him a really big favour. Since she finished second on one of the country’s biggest talent shows, Louise Henson has become a household name. “Hi, sis, it’s Pete here. Just wondering if you could make the launch tonight.” Pete waits for a reply. “How could you forget?”

As Pete panics that his sister may not turn up for the party, Tinalou and Steph arrive home from the salon. Tinalou opens the flap of Steph’s dog carrier and her little darling makes her way into the front room. Tinalou removes her sunglasses, checks her appearance in the mirror and, just as she expected, the door bell sounds. She opens the front door to see Blackgloves standing there in a smart suit and carrying a briefcase. She invites him indoors and takes him through to the kitchen, as she prepares a tray of delicious biscuits and boils the kettle for tea, the pair chat about Blackgloves’ newspaper editor, Chubbler. “I always thought he was a bit of a dark horse. As is he were hiding something. Don’t you think?” comments Tinalou. Blackgloves agrees, but praises his punctuality and commitment to the job. Tinalou pours the drinks and offers Blackgloves a biscuit. He takes the tray and places it on the table, before taking hold of her waist and telling her he loves her. “Not here, darling!” she giggles as he kisses her stomach. “Tomorrow night at the office?” After Blackgloves agrees, she leads him to the door, kisses him and says they will meet the following evening at 19:30 – sharp.

While Blackgloves tries to take his mind off his mistress and set his mind on his latest headline, Leyla finishes making her husband’s lunch. Within moments of placing it on the table, Yakutz returns home, kisses his wife and tucks in. As he chomps on his sandwich, Leyla removes his policeman’s hat and takes his coat, before telling him she has some important news for him. He continues to eat, but also listens to what Leyla has to say. “I won’t beat around the bush,” she starts, “I’m pregnant.” Yakutz begins chokes on his food and takes a long slurp of his water. In just three seconds, he has found out that he and his wife are expecting their first child – he leaps up from his seat and squeezes his wife in excitement.

With just half an hour until the bar is opened, Conrad and Lucia are busy dressing for the party. Conrad is clothed in a smart tuxedo, while his wife shows off her figure in a little black dress. She walks into the lounge, clutching a small silver bag and tells her husband she is ready to leave. “Are you joking? In that? You look cheap.” Lucia is shocked. “I mean there’s revealing and then there’s plain old slutty. You’re not going.” Lucia informs her husband that she is going and makes her way to the front door. He grabs her arm and drags her upstairs. Conrad takes a key from his pocket, throws Lucia into the spare bedroom and locks her inside. “I said you’re not going!”

As Lucia tries to force the door open, Champagne informs her father that she won’t be attending the launch. Jason is puzzled – she has been so excited about the opening for the past two weeks. “Sorry, daddy, but there’s a big party at the restaurant tonight and I can’t get time off. I did try, but Naomi, Lucy and Sharon are all ill with a bug, so there’s no chance. My taxi’s here now, so I’ll see you later. Love you, daddy.” Champagne hops into her taxi and sets off to work, outside of Spyton. As the cab pulls up outside Pinkies, Champagne slips out of her skirt and blouse, to reveal a corset and a tiny thong. She pays her driver and makes her way indoors – to strip.

Pete calls his sister, who claims to be stuck in traffic a few miles away. Pete decides he can’t prolong the opening any longer, so goes to cut the ribbon himself. The residents of Spyton flock indoors and are greeted with a free buffet filled with a fine delicacy. The Spyton families dance, drink free champagne and enjoy their second home – Digibar. The younger residents play pool and quietly take glasses of bubbly, out of their parents’ view, while the older residents gossip and catch-up with friends and family alike.
After hours at the launch, many families make their way home and into their warm beds, while the party animals drain the last glasses of champagne and take a nibble at the left-over food from the buffet. The Vincent family soon sober-up when they return home to find that they have been burgled. They are cautious to enter the house, so call the first person they can think of – their local police officer, Yakutz. Leyla and Yakutz are still partying hard and celebrating their happy news when Yakutz receives the call. He leaves his wife in the safe hands of Pete and makes his way to the Vincent house. As he crosses the street, he is shocked when a speeding limousine heads in his direction. Despite trying to dodge to car, Yakutz is hit and sent flying into a nearby wall...

don't worry, we will see steve's character in episode 1.3! with a strict 7 scenes per-episode, there is no way i could have every character in every episode!

It was good i enjoyed reading and it was just the right length, i hope all episodes remain as long but not longer.

However, i was expecting more dialogue between the characters. It felt more like a fly on the wall then a part of what was happening, but i am nit-picking.

Well done!!!!

unfortunately, i have had to let two of my scriptwriters go from the writing team this evening, due to lack of ideas, commitment and contact from both parties! i haven't recieved one idea from either forum members after relaunching 'the soap opera'! from now on, the writing team will be:
