Cherie Blair's hairdressing costs charged to Labour Party !

Apparently Cherie Blair employed a personal hairstylist during the 2005 general election campaign, at a total cost of £7,700 (£275.00 per day), all paid for courtesy of the Labour Party. When asked about this, a Labour spokeswoman said "so what", and that she was enormously popular inside the party. Also that they won the election.

But with her money, should she pay for her own hairdressing costs ?

To make it worse .. the article says the Labour spokeswoman says "So what ... -snip- ... we won the election"

So that makes it OK then?

And I thought my hard earned money went towards paying for healthcare and things that really mattered ....

It wouldn't be so bad, but she is a high earner in her own right!

The Blairs are taking the P

''My too-fine hopeless hair is about to be on show again; Susie (who's my personal assistant with luscious burnished hair incidentally) revamps it for my tiny walk-on part at the Richard and Judy Book Awards – announcing a winner's name.''

''Back to Campaign Headquarters where Susie in Michael's office tells me my hair looked a mess on television. We agree it's time for action. I have heard on the grapevine that a certain other leader's wife has booked arguably the best and certainly the priciest hairdresser in town for the entire campaigning month ahead; I reckon that gives me some good leverage in getting across that my hair deserves a look in, too...

Sadly my own hairdresser doesn't go a bundle on the idea of home visits at dawn and tells me I'd faint away at his out-of-hours charges. Susie offers her services. She does an instant, on the spot blow-dry; it's marvellous, she's a genius and we make plans for regular early morning hair-salvation sessions – one panic off my long list.''

If I were Cherie Blair I'd be wanting some of that £7 000 back. Her hair is/was a mess.

Also, she isn't the First Lady.

If the Americans say it then it must be true

First Lady usually only applies the wife of a (male) President in a Republic.

It is not the case for a Prime Minister's wife under a monarchy.

First lady, second lady... whatever...

issue is she had this paid for her? Should be ashamed of herself... and the "so what?" response is typical arrogance.

I heard from the man down the pub that she also started WWII and was probably responsible for the South Sea Bubble scandal and the Peasant's Revolt.

I reckon she had something to do with Lord Lucan going missing too.

I know you admire her as much as I don't but she wins no hearts and minds with her "queening" about. She seemes to display a kind of arrogance that sits badly on a premier's wife.

Look around the world. she compares more to Imelda Marcos than any other politician's wife.

I actually don't admire her. She's too overly religious for my liking, I don't admire anyone into freebies, she's too much into crystals and alternative therapies etc and I don't like the way she hangs on to Tony and grins at him inanely at party conferences. I just think she's also an excellent lawyer and that she's gets a very unfair hammering off the press for her temerity not to look like a typical PM's wife (probably making her paranoid about her appearance), not to be beautiful either, to have a career at which she's very successful (unlike other PM's wifes, who were allowed by the media to write poetry or books about opera singers) and to have a mind of her own.

The comparison with Imelda Marcos is breathtaking, really. Loads of other people have milked the system more than her. Margaret Thatcher wasn't adverse to promoting, for instance, the business interests of her son on occasions.

Soz She was the only premier's wife that I could bring to mind that displayed Cherie's 'gannet-like' tendencies.

Did Maggie use public money tho' ? I don't remember about her 'extra-curricular' activities. I do know that her husband was a self-made man before she came to power, so he did defo. did not hitch a ride... not saying Cherie did - 'afore you chomp me!

I agree with the 'so what ?'

........it's like saying, grrrr that Dame Judi Dench get personal make up and hairdos every night before she goes on stage and the theatre pays for it............grrrrr, she's rich enough to pay for her own make up................

I'm sure all people at that level and any other get involved taking things they shouldn't to some degree, just as the rest of us use the photocopier privately or take pens home or worse.

There's a fine line between gifts, obviously, and corruption. I think people like Prince Andrew are more guilty of misusing public money and wasn't Queen Mary notorious for going to people's houses and admiring expensive objects, knowing the hosts would be obliged to give them to her?

if you don't like labour then this is a good thing surely? that 7,700 they spent on hairdos is 7,700 they couldn't spend on propaganda and the like

Labour Party money is not 'public money', it is Labour Party money. If they think it appropriate to fund the hair-dos of CB then that is their business. She was electioneering with her husband, and obviously the LP wished her to look as well-groomed as possible - so they paid her expenses, just as they would pay rail-fare etc.

I am no fan of the Blairs but think this kind of criticism is particularly petty.
